It seems to be unanimously accepted that sequels/remakes/prequels/spin-offs aren't as good as the original. So which ones do you guys think defy this rule?

For me:

Magical girl Lyrical Nanoha A's: The first season was good, but this season has even stronger characterization and plot than the first as well as being better paced.

Vandread 2nd stage: This season is a bit more serious compared to the 1st but that isn't a bad thing. There's a lots of strong character development in this one and even the characters that were extensively developed in the 1st season are developed even further. Plus, the action scenes are more exciting and intense this time around.

Full Metal Panic Fumoffu and The Second raid: The first season tried to mix gritty mecha action and wacky fish out of water comedy and while I did like the show I thought Fumoffu was better at being funny and The second Raid was better at being serious gritty mecha action show.

Code Geass R2 was better then the first i felt, and Hellsing Ultimate is better then the original Hellsing

i cant think of much else....dragonball z better then dragonball...but this isnt really saying alot.

O...nearly said Naruto shippuden > naruto...but the Zabuza arc is the best part of the show thus far...so i cant (yet!), i think shippuden will be better considering manga...and depends how many fillers get added -_-

Aria: each sequel is better than the previous.
Evangelion's remake movies (the first, so far) are impressive.
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni
Honey and Clover
Kara no Kyoukai's movies at the very least maintain a standard level of excellence.
Maria-sama ga Miteru: Most people find either Haru, the OVAs, or both better than the original.
Mobile Suit Gundam + Zeta.
Nanoha + A's.

Geass' second season was dragged down by bad pacing, uninspired writing, and even worse character focus, though it was no less entertaining and was able to conclude well.
The first season was definitely better.

Never saw the original iterations of Ghost in the Shell, but I did like the second season of SAC better than the first season...

Hellsing Ultimate hands-down owns the ass of the original TV series of Hellsing, not only because they actually stick to the manga story, but because the animation studio quality effort is much higher this time around too...

Although I wouldn't say the manga remake of Eureka Seven is better, it is different though, and a lot more graphic and dark, with less focus on the romance aspects...

Kanon 2006 is like three million times better than the original.
I also agree that the Aria sequels are better than the first season.
While still not the greatest show ever, Jubei-chan 2 is significantly better than the first one.
R.O.D - The TV was at least as good as R.O.D - Read or Die.

GaoGaiGar Final- it was equally epic and good as the original.
Big O II- I thought it was great and in a way a bit better than the original.
Cyber Formula OVA's- All of them were way better than the orignal

The kino no tabiMovies which are essentially longer episodes are a great addition to the series. Very much enjoyed.

Honey and clover series two was a great addition without it i would have felt a little hollow inside. It wraps things up nicely especially in the last episode.

I dropped by to say just this. Even though the first series was great, the second series, what with its delving into Kusanagi's past, the interesting social critique and the analysis of the leader's role in a revolution, 2nd GIG is actually one of my top three series of all time.

Either way, the whole Ghost in the Shell franchise is a series of constant spinoffs based on the same fictional context originally created by Masamune Shirow in '89, so yeah, my vote goes for that. There's no "original iteration", unless you count the first manga (and still, many of the characters changed a lot in the transition to anime, namely Kusanagi herself). Likewise, there's no "canon" or structured timeline, so every "version" of the GITS universe stands on its own as a singular work, as copies without the "original" (a true case of stand alone complex, if I might say so

).

Three OVAs, Elfen Lied, SaiKano, and Kino's Journey: Life Goes On, didn't look like they were OVAs made just to squeeze out more money. Fumoffu! was also a good sequel of FMP. If we count the Clannad OVA, then I also love it.

I agree with a lot of the examples cited in this thread. Aria, Nanoha A's and Kanon 2006 are prime examples of shows improving over time. (Not that Aria ever left much to be desired.)

I personally thought that the second season of Jigoku Shoujo was better than the first, though I loved both. I also liked the To Heart 2 OVAs better than the actual series.

Although I rate all three a 10/10, I thought that Try and Next were both better than the original series of Slayers.

Although revolution doesn't hold up to them.

^ That. It's one of the few anime I give a 10 to. Of course, manga readers still say it fails, but they say so for all anime.
