Macross Frontier Character Discussion - Sheryl Nome

Some bits of info on Sheryl's and Grace's pasts from the Drama CD (Galaxy Memories). All translation credit goes to seiichiro_yayoi @ LJ from the AltoxSheryl comm

Grace was narrating this track and offered an interesting insight into their past. Anyway, here goes:

-We have confirmation that Sheryl is indeed Mao's grand daughter.
-Sheryl is the object of Grace's revenge against Mao (yes, we all know this, but there you go, straight from the horse's mouth).
-It appears Sheryl's parents were killed by Grace and the other entities within her for going against them (for the Parallel Thought Network, I assume).
-The other entities knew about Sheryl being in the slums but kept her there for a while just for the sadistic joy of watching her suffer. Grace herself did not know about this until the other entities asked her opinion on "what else was there to do with Mao's grand daughter?"
-Grace then took Sheryl for the Fairy9 project, deliberately infecting her with the V-type virus. Within this sequence, there's a very touching scene where a young Sheryl asks Grace to hold her hand while going through a seemingly painful experimentation process. T_T
-It seems that when one is injected with the V-type virus, there is a backlash of LOTS of pain. Sheryl lived through that and is known to be the only survivor of the process. Ergo, Sheryl was considered to be (almost) a success that's why Grace and the other entities had such high hopes for her.
-Grace admits that she has developed affection/feelings for Sheryl over the past 10 years.
-Sheryl genuinely looks up to Grace not only as her manager, but her one true friend and older sister.
-However, upon the discovery that the Fairy9 project is a failure, Grace decides to reprogram herself. She knew her feelings for Sheryl would jeopardize their ambitions.
-Grace, right before reprogramming utters some final words: "Goodbye, my beloved Fairy."

So Grace is indeed a cybernetic AI, then? Or should we take the reprogramming bit more in tone of the psychological/hypnotherapy way?

Also the implication is that the Grace in the series isn't the Grace that grow to care Sheryl in the spec of 10 years, if anyone get lost at the last line translation

I would say the former. Just after Grace says her goodbye, you can hear an electricity-like sound as if something was being shut down (closest thing I can think of is the sound of those old coloured TVs being turned off).

I was discussing with another person earlier today and he said, "oh, so maybe that explains why Grace nuked herself." Perhaps that's how she got re-programmed in the anime. Just pure speculation though.

Wow, with those revelations, I think Grace will now be dethrone in my list of most evil anime villain. I'm beginning to like her...well the pre-reprogrammed Grace. Great to see a bit of Sheryl's past. I wished they put this on the series or make an OVA for this.

For me, these revelations change little of what I think about Grace. All it proves to me is that at the very least, she is still human, at least until episode 14 or so. However, the fact that she is willing to cut herself off from Sheryl for the sake of her project and her revenge, going as far as reprogramming her emotions for the sake of pitting her rivals' progeny against each other just makes her even more cold-hearted than ever.

She is still human, but not human enough to set her revenge aside for anyone's sake.

No, it hasn't. We don't know if she's a person who found a way to transfer her personality into the network, or if she was originally an AI, hence my confusion.

Well, holy crap. Absolute confirmation of everything we postulated here ( which we really didn´t know officially, but just speculated about ). Congrats to us, we really nailed that down very well. Wow. I am really amazed that our speculations were exactly right.

Also, the additional stuff is interesting. When do y'all guess would be the point where Grace does this to herself?

The statement "I'm Sheryl Nome" has more meaning to it then just a boast, because this Sheryl Nome lost her parents, wandered in the slums of her homeland with only herself to rely on, found stardom and became the voice of the galaxy, an unimaginable dream for most street urchins. In the late of the series, this Sheryl Nome pressed on to sing despite having been betrayed by the closest person in her life. She sang not just for herself but for the sake of others. It could have been so much easier to withdraw, especially with a looming death to pass as an excuse. Sheryl's strength really astounds me. Her character has pretty much influenced how I envision an ideal female character. In short, she is Sheryl Nome and she is awesome.

Hm, for all I know, it could've been pre-series, Grace could've just proceeded with the plans in hopes Sheryl will still work and then voila, finds greenery. OTOH, nuking herself in ep 14 makes sense as well when the greenery goes kira! and she realizes she needed Sheryl no more.

It's good that they've decided to flesh out Grace and Sheryl's relationship here, but I thought it would be even better if they included the core bits within the TV series. The whole time I was reading that passage, I kept getting reminded of the Episode 18 sequence, where the first thing Sheryl mentioned upon finding out Grace's betrayal was about Ranka's powers instead, and it took off from there. It was a bit awkward, but hopefully, they'd make the transition smoother when deciding to add in more canon material in other formats to compliment the original storyline.
