I have to agree with Dengar here. The only thing that really would have improved about RWBY if Monty were still here would be the fights. People forget the writing for the series has always been pretty bad even when Monty was working on it. The only volume that I feel was consistently well-written throughout was volume 3 (and I’ve even heard people disagree on that) which Monty had little to do with. Even volume 4, as poor as the writing was in some parts, was still better written overall than volumes 1 & 2. Monty was always a style over substance type of person. He had good ideas, but could never execute them very well. So the writing would still be bad regardless. Though, Volume 5 was pretty abysmal even by the standards of these writers.
Speaking of which, though I already went over most of my issues with volume 5 in a previous post, here’s some more problems I forgot to cover that I hope volume six will fix. First is the exploration of the kingdoms. Aside from a far way shot and some still images in the first episode, we never got to see much of Mystral at all other than Haven. Mystral is supposed to have the biggest black market in Remnat, but that’s never explored or even mentioned. I hope in Volume 6 we’ll get to see more of Atlas than just the academy. Another problem I have is the lack of grimm. All the other volumes featured the grimm very prominantlyand always introduced a variety of new grimm. Volume 5 introduced the Lancer grimm, but that was it. That was the only grimm featured in the entire volume, which is insane. You know, when I finished the volume I was greatly disappointed. But as I keep thinking about it I get more and more pissed. This volume was trash. Is it the worst volume of RWBY? I don’t know. It’s tough to beat volume 1. Volume 5 certainly looks better. Volume 1 also had the Jaune/Cardin segment, which is the worst thing in all of RWBY in my opinion. On the other hand, volume1 had better action overall, and Ruby actually felt like the main character. If the writers could improve even a few of the many problems this last volume, like the slow fights or the horrible pacing, then Volume 6 would be a major improvement. If they would give Ruby the spotlight and actually explain the silver eyes that would automatically make Volume 6 ten times better than this volume. Miles and Kerry need to step it up, or RWBY is going to go the way of Bleach where fans will eventually get fed-up with the bullcrap and start jumping ship in mass. It’s already started. There’s still time for RT to turn it around before the series crashes and burns, and then fades out like Bleach did. That would be a complete disgrace to Monty. |

Remember that Chinese RWBY handheld fighting game that i posted and some suspected was not official?
Well it turns out it is an official licensed RWBY game! And here are some original characters that will appear in this game.

Sooo, I finally got around to watching all of Vol.5. First thought that comes to my head: finally, more RWBY! I liked it. Fridge logic though...:
- Leo was a piss poor excuse of a headmaster. I get that Ozpin is a mountain to compare to, but DAMN he was weak enough for OSKAR to beat, Oskar who has had minimal, unofficial training and a weapon that he can only use as a beating stick. - Hazel's presence is inversely proportional to his size and rationality. The moment he went Hulk SMASH, I lost most of my interest in him. I don't mind his very cliche reasons for hating Ozpin, but characters like Watts are a lot more...dangerous, you know? Because they keep their cool and can always think ahead. - Speaking of which, there was definitely not enough Watts in this volume. He is my favourite villain from vol.4 and with him in its closing clip, I'd expected a lot more. Still, I might get that in the next voluem, so here's hoping. - Blake's character development has been so immense, that Vol.1 Blake is basically Illya. Good job of showing how her way of thinking has evolved, as well as great time to make her an actually sociable person. - I don't hate on Raven. She follows the path of least risk, by her standards, but she's so obviously alone in her plans, that she's already given up on the rest of the world. A tragic character, IMO very likely to leave us comin vol.6, especially when she's a maiden. - Ozpin being Oz. Come on, we ALL saw it a mile away, but...if he's been around for centuries, are there still things he doesn't know, or does he simply keep a boatload of secrets for everyone else's protection? - Battle scenes. Not a fan of the new style, stiff is the best word I can describe it with. It's not BAD, but very...coordinated, as if the fighters have prediscussed what they are about to do and just pull it off as a well-trained choreography, instead of instincts kicking in and reading the flow of combat. - Power levels! Nora's always been strong AF, Jaune can pretty much buff anyone, Weiss can apparently summon ice clones of anything provided she has the aura for it, Ruby learns CQC, Yang finally controls her temper. Blake's the same, but she's always been average, I think? - Adam Taurus nearly arrested. Not to be a party pooper, but the dude has an entire criminal organization under his thumb, he killed their legitimate leader after turning everyone to his side...and then proceeds to execute his master plan with half a dozen people. Where are the other few thousand he had in Vol.1!? It's definitely not the last of him we've seen, but it was a bitch-ass way to lose a fight. Also, Blake countering a strike that once took Yang's arm makes me doubt the consistency of everyone's combat level. - Illya's character is as detestable as Vol.1 Blake. I know it's done on purpose, but man, that was annoying. Extra points for getting her ass beat by Sun (although to be fair, Sun's awesome). Bonus points to RT if she is used as an intermediary instead of a shoehorned character due to popularity. - Cinder Falls. I doubt she's dead, but when she comes back, I'd like her to be as imposing as she used to be. Salem has shadowed Cinder, along with Mercury and Emerald, but they're still the villains with whom the main cast has the most beef. I expect an explosive comeback! That's all I can think of right now, it was a good season, though not as good as vo.4. 7.8/10 from me, looking forward to the next one. |
