So here's a headscratcher - the VN is getting a release in multiple languages on PS4/Switch, but...only in Japan??? Why would you subtitle it in languages for other regions but not let it be sold there? Is this due to a console contract or something?

Type moon paying for translations is different from getting publishing licenses. In order to release games in order regions, you have to:

• Prepare materials to pass the ratings board for each region (e.g. PEGI, ESRB, etc)
• Pass vetting measures for listing a game on each console platform holder's store (Nintendo of America/Europe's eshop, Sony's PS store)
• Seize means of distribution for physical/retail production (optional for niche games)
• Make sure the localized game works on overseas consoles (since most often many localized versions are technically separate apps from the original Japanese)

Of course the return is usually worth the investment, but the investment isn't exactly 0.

I'm taking it as handhelds and PS4 only though. It's progress but it will clearly be a long while before it goes elsewhere.

I don't really get the logic but it was the same for F/SN Realta Nua. It only came out on PC many many years later.

I think it's a Type-Moon thing. Clannad, Muv-Luv, Yuno, Steins;Gate, Saya no Uta, Utawarerumono, etc - you can get them on PC in the West with ease. Fan translations of FSN and partial ones of MnY appeared so long ago. It's not like it isn't possible. Fate/Extella is on PC but that isn't Type-Moon. It could also be exclusivity contracts. Maybe with Witch on the Holy Night, things might change. But I won't hold my breath. The movie is definitely something, because I honestly thought this wouldn't get adapted.

I got the game and played through it. Though the localization of Soji's name bothers me, worth the investment. Can't wait for the movie so I can see the Dog get punched on big screen.

Don't know much about this series except that it exists. The latest trailer was a good tease. The vibes, the soundtrack, the cool scene at the end....would be cool if the movie got released overseas
