First look at Matt Groening's first new show in two decades:

"It’s been nearly 20 years since Matt Groening has given you a new show, so… it’s
time.

Netflix released the first images of Disenchantment, an animated fantasy series that
features the voices of Abbi Jacobson, Nat Faxon, and Eric Andre. Created by Groening
(The Simpsons, Futurama), the show takes place in the crumbling medieval kingdom
named Dreamland and centers on the exploits of a hard-drinking princess named
Bean (Jacobson), her plucky elf friend Elfo (Faxon), and her personal demon Luci
(Andre) as they match wits with “ogres, sprites, harpies, imps, trolls, walruses, and
lots of human fools.”

The series, whose 10-episode first season launches Aug. 17, also will feature the voice
talents of John DiMaggio, Billy West, Maurice LaMarche, Tress MacNeille, David
Herman, Matt Berry, Jeny Batten, Rich Fulcher, Noel Fielding, and Lucy Montgomery.

“Ultimately, Disenchantment will be about life and death, love and sex, and how to
keep laughing in a world full of suffering and idiots, despite what the elders and
wizards and other jerks tell you,” is how Groening described the show last year."

"Netflix debuted the first official trailer for Matt Groening's new series, Disenchantment,
at San Diego Comic-Con 2018. Disenchantment is Groening's first new project in almost

Disenchantment review: Groening’s new Netflix toon
is off to a bloody good start:

""The Simpsons meets Game of Thrones" sounds like one of those Netflix ideas
generated by bots (a tactic that Netflix has employed in the past). That kind of
experiment, as cute as it sounds at first blush, could flop if it stitches two dissimilar
series together in messy fashion. But the team behind Disenchantment, the first Matt
Groening animated series since Futurama launched in 1999, seems blissfully unaware of
hot TV trends—and is all the better for it.

Groening's first-ever non-network series debuts on Netflix on August 17 as a 10-episode
"half-season," and we've reviewed seven of those episodes ahead of the formal launch.
From what we've seen thus far, Disenchantment wins by establishing friendships
between unique, likable characters—and then leading them to their basest urges."

Disenchantment May Not Enchant Hardcore Fantasy Fans:

"Science fiction author Robert Repino had high expectations for Disenchantment, the
new animated series from Matt Groening, creator of The Simpsons and Futurama.
Unfortunately, he was underwhelmed by the show’s early episodes.

“I counted four episodes that ended with a very slow-moving, sloppy, contrived action
scene,” Repino says in Episode 324 of the Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy podcast.

And while Futurama episodes like “The Prisoner of Benda” and “Meanwhile” demonstrate
a sophisticated understanding of science fiction tropes, Disenchantment never shows
much familiarity with the fantasy genre."

Netflix Renews Disenchantment for Another 2-Part Season:

"The kingdom of Dreamland will remain open. Netflix has announced that Matt
Groening’s fantasy series Disenchantment has been renewed for another 20-episode
season, which means we’ll be getting new episodes through at least 2021.

As revealed on Twitter, Netflix has given Disenchantment another season. But that
renewal actually guarantees two more years of the series. In the case of
Disenchantment, each 20-episode season is split across two years—the second half of
the current season will return sometime in 2019. Likewise, this second season will come
out in 2020 and 2021."

Disenchantment Season 2 Fixes the Debut's Mistakes,
but Adds a Surprising New One:

"Netflix’s Disenchantment started out as a curiosity. Much of it felt like standard Matt
Groening fare, akin to The Simpsons or Futurama. But it ended on such a promising
note, it made me eager to see what was around the corner. The sophomore season
has buffered out the rough edges, embracing the show’s unique strengths while
teasing out a rich and textured world. But in the end, that’s all we get. Teasers for a
bigger story yet to come.

The series picks up immediately after the events of the first season. The people of
Dreamland have been turned to stone, leaving King Zøg (John DiMaggio) alone in his
dying kingdom. Princess Bean (Abbi Jacobson) has run off with her mother, Queen
Dagmar, to Maru. It doesn’t take long for Bean to realize something is off about her
newfound family, especially with Dagmar telling Bean she’s destined to fulfill some
“great prophecy.” What that prophecy actually is remains a mystery to both Bean and
the audience (a recurring theme this season)."

Some of Disenchantment Part 2's Coolest Teasers,
Nods, and Easter Eggs:

"Disenchantment is a different type of Matt Groening show. Unlike The Simpsons and
Futurama, Disenchantment is playing a very long and purposeful game. Most of the
second season was about teasing bigger stories and plot lines—sometimes to the
detriment of the series itself. But there’s a lot of stuff to pick apart in Part 2 of the
Netflix fantasy series... as well as some solid jokes and Futurama references.

I found myself pouring through the second season of Disenchantment, hoping to
catch some of the things they’re clearly trying to tease for the audience—whether it’s
some hieroglyphics spotted on the table, next to the map spelling out Maru’s plans for
Dreamland, or that creepy music box melody that plays throughout the second
season. Some of them are most likely me reading way too much into things (because
that’s what I do) but others are definitely there for a purpose or raise more questions.
