He did a good job lasting as long as he did in the VF-171. But it's still outdated by now.

Well, after watching this compared to the preview episode, I've accepted it a little more. Maybe the editing made the ridiculousness of dancing mechas in the middle of an intense and destructive battle a little better. The holographic dancing shield plates is still ridiculous, but feels a little better after a second review. Weird poses as intros to the band is still weird poses. The singing is Macross style, so that is great. The prancing around in a battlefield is a little more sketchy. I'll have to see what episode 2 brings.

I still don't like the main song of Walkure, which sounds so awkward with that English chorus, and so generic sounding. The second (last song) they sang was better, but I just really dislike the saxophone chorus.

Other than the dancing idol groups with ridiculous poses and dancing mecha, I like the other aspects of the show. The battle scenes are great, when they don't involve idols. It also seems like they cut some scenes from Walkure in the city compared to the preview.

Well, the guy that made this series and AKB0048 is the exact same guy (Kawamori Shouji), so it is not surprising that they are so similar.

Is it really machine issue? Hayate did indeed great job with his battle dancing, which is something he was more or less accustomed beforehand, but got pawned in he tried fly away in fighter form. Which he couldn't ever try before.

I don't think the machine is 'outdated', but modernized and intended to be a jack-of-all-trades. Thats pretty much what the 171 is. If we need a comparison, its like the F-16 or the P-40. Otoh, to be fair, when Hayate picked it up, the 171 was already damaged and the pilot carried away. So considering what he is able to do with broken gear, he is pretty good.

Though operating a forklift is nothing compared to piloting, but I am gonna let that slide...

Macross Zero done a pretty good job. Although Can't really compare the two considering FAF gear is nowhere as advanced. That, and in Delta... EVERYONE IS KUNG-FU FIGHTIN'!!! *cue music*

I hope this would be better than 0048..

And the VF-171 dancing was awesome.

PS: Mina Kubota is involved in music departement alongside other two..

Poor Mirage. They don't even get her name right. lol
Wait, her name is Mirage? Which name is correct? So the girl on the right was the female pilot in this episode? Am I right? I am somewhat confused. lol

It was awesome but I'm not sure what exactly happened this episode. lol

Hayate's "forklift" though is a worker-type Destroid, and apparently the controls for the 171 is more or less similar.

The girl on the right is Mirage, the female pilot in Delta squadron and ostensibly the third leg in the traditional Macross love triangle. Mikumo is the "center" girl for the Walküre idol group. She makes a much stronger impression than Mirage does in this ep, IMHO, and it sorta makes me wonder if the event staff that produced that flier are trying to give us a no-so-subtle hint about their preferences.

(The flier is from a stamp rally to promote the series, so it was an official event.)

Eh, as much as this is the norm for mecha anime, i sorta like how Sidonia averted it, in that the newer model mech had the exact same controls as the older model, but piloted in a totally different fashion because the auto-assist was tuned to be more aggressive; that seems like a more realistic take on how two machines with superficially similar control schemes should handle.

Both Misa and Sheryl started little later than their opponent and we know how it ended right?

Plus , Hayate VA seems to be in need of immediate rescue from someone...

It's true that I've watched the previous series, so the general situation was probably clearer to me to begin with. But I felt as if this gave a slightly clearer introduction than Frontier. It took rewatching the whole series for me to really get it there.

The stowaway is the debut role for Suzuki Minori, who is 19 and from Aichi (where Nagoya is). She says she started watching late-night anime in the upper grades of elementary school (!) and decided that she wanted to become a seiyuu. She did a tiny bit of formal training when she was in school. But it was only when it was announced that this show would be made that she decided to go for it. And she was chosen from among 8000 entrants for this role. Since childhood, she has had the cute nickname of "Minoringo." In Japanese, ringo means "apple."

I thought she did a nice job of the ingenue role.

I really enjoyed the whole episode, from the space fighting to the mecha dancing to the singing and the hero's character.

Let's see who comes out of this best:

Hikaru Ichijo: Experienced civilian aerobatic pilot. Falls asleep in cockpit of intact VF-1. Quickly grasps basic flying of VF-1, totally unprepared for combat and Battroid mode.

Shin Kudo: Experienced military fighter pilot. Takes over severely battle-damaged VF-0. Makes some minor attacks before VF is disabled.

Alto Saotome: In flight training at high school. Takes over slightly battle-damaged VF-25. Makes some minor attacks before being rescued.

Hayate Immelman: As far as we know, a skilled Work Destroid operator. Takes over a moderately battle-damaged VF-171. Completely outclasses multiple Regults and a Glaug in physical combat, transforms and flies fighter before having a weird glowing naked moment and having VF disabled.

...Hayate seems to be in the lead here.

Hayata is a newtype so naked dream sequences in the middle of battle are mandatory. :P

And yet Hikaru,Shin and Alto had better and more realistic reasons for being able to pilot the Valks at that point in their lives.

I just find it hard to believe that a Destroid designed for civilian work, would have the same controls as a Valk.

Then again the controls could be similar while its in Battroid mode.

Eh, i think he's more 'item assisted' than 'natural.' He appears to have a warp crystal pendant, which might allow him to access to all that idol singer mojo in the same way that Alto did with Sheryl's earring. Contrast this with Freyja and Mikumo, who as Windermerians (assuming the obvious with Mikumo), appear to have some sort of innate talent for this warp magic stuff.

Hmm... they might be brewing up a second coming of the Max/Milia romance, with Hayate playing the genius rookie that infuriates and fascinates the traditionally trained and seasoned Mirage.

Eh, if did it have that magic in it wouldn't that pendant be given a close up while its glowing? All we had was the heart-hair which for some reason is reminding me of Rankas Cellphone/Mic/Vid badly battered communication device.

Eh, the warp crystals are a Macguffin introduced in Macross Frontier, and less of a mystery than the hair tentacle things; if they had to choose between focusing on one or the other for this first ep, i think it makes sense that they chose the latter. Speaking of which, however, i hope i'm not the only one that was a little creeped-out by Freyja's lines leading up to the heart tentacle thing becoming... erect.

Mikumo appears to do something similar with all of her hair while she sings- and Ranka could do something like that too, apparently. How many of these Protoculture-seeded races have tentacle hair, and should the humans be worried?
