* Can't recall the last time I saw a show about a cynical yet not unhappy nor emo loner commenting on social interactions. Hyouka was about Houtarou coming out of his shell, but this was about Hachiman happily staying within it, while pointing out the dark side of every relationship and personality (including that awesome exposition about nice girls). And his solutions to social problems involve breaking up friendships and insulting people who need encouragement. In any other show, somebody like him would be a villain, yet here with his internal monologue it's clear that Hachiman is actually trying to help in the harsh way that only somebody who stands away from the rest of the crowd could.

* Yui was a genuinely nice girl, otherwise she wouldn't stay in the service club. A social butterfly, but doesn't really see the deeper sides of relationships, and hence is pretty useless at solving problems.

* Yukino appears arrogant but actually seems to have an inferiority complex regarding Haruno, hence why she "helps" others, whether by making others help themselves, or taking over entirely in the case of the incompetent Sagami.

* Haruno, wow she was one fiendish manipulator. She gave bad advice to Sagami just to make sure Yukino was in charge! And everything turned out for the better because of that.

* Hayato would in any other show would be the good guy protagonist. But the way he's presented here makes him actually look like the pushy type of leader who drags everybody else along.

* The animation and art could be better. Flaws and inconsistencies were rather obvious, and the show's art style is a far cry from the novel's pastel watercolor style illustrations.

Score: 9/10. This was the big surprise of the season. Before the show started, I thought it would just be another of the [goddamn long title] comedy shows, but this turned out to be one of the very few shows that dealt with human interactions in a realistic (and totally cynical) manner.

Watching Hikigaya's high school life was entertaining. Although some of his choices are plain idiotic. I can say that he's awesome for a jerk. Him being a loner and embracing it, is what makes him special. I can see him discarding that loner idea as Yukino is willing to ask for other people's help.

Nice series overall, every character were unique and my personal favorite was Shizuka-sensei.

Okay, I've just finished watching the 13 episodes. Amazing...
I watched it all in a one-go, so it was around 6 hours right now, but I regret nothing.
As you may see on MyAnimeList, I gave the series overall a 9. It cannot match with Clannad ~After Story~ for example, but it was simply amazing.
Although the official genres are Romance and Comedy, there is a touch of Drama to it.

Great work, I hope to see a Second Season!

Well, it was a great show with not so great production values, but I loved the series. So much that I recommended it to my brother too, and now he's watching it.

EDIT: The thing I liked best was Hikki and Komachi's relationship. A lot better than in most shows, I'd say. Which reminds me, isn't Komachi the only person without an alliterative name? i.e. Hikigaya Komachi.

I blame my college-life for making me late for finishing this show

10/10!

let's wrap up this anime in simple way :

Hikigaya Hachiman = one of the best protagonist ever.... His quote is amusing... and his way of thinking is beyond interesting
I'd love to be him during my highschool time... admitting his own weakness, love himself, never afraid of pain, and has his own way to do
sacrificing himself to help others.... He truly deserved to be hero

Yukinoshita Yukino = somehow, I like her more than Yui. Yukino is growing.... she started to make friends, understanding people, try to open up, and little by little fall in love to Hachiman (oops! that's only in my imagination.. sorry). Her interaction toward Hachiman, Yui, Hayama, and finally her sister are enjoyable

Yuigahama Yui = without Yui, Hachiman and Yukino won't be able to interact to each other. Although she seems little off in the trio, she is someone who take the communication role since she's the best in adapting in every situation. Well, her feeling toward Hachiman is cute and she is someone who keep cheerfulness in this anime

Others = I love those who understand the true nature of Hachiman. Still getting friendly to him even though Hachiman always making trouble with his words. I should mention Hayato as one of my favorite because he developed some unique relationship with Hachiman

in the end, I'm expecting season 2! I just want to see who will be paired with Hachiman in the end. Yui is advancing fast but Yukino-neechan will make sure her imouto will get Hachiman first. (you can see her approval after Hachiman's super badass quote in committee's meeting about slogan)

If one of the girls don't make a move on Hachiman, he would go the homo route, the guy is opent to a different relationship.

Anyway, Hachiman has showed him how 'the ends justifies the means' on his on way, taking all the blame and hatred by making of himself a "villain" from a pov but being a kind of tragic hero in disguise.

Its sad but not to the point of making me feel any pity towards him, why? Because he is fine with it.

Now, I wonder how deep will he go with his method because at some point he will find himself on a dead end.

Yukino, not bad a character but her inferiority complex doesn't makes her that appealing.

Yui, does her best, too bad for her Hachiman is afraid of changing himself by getting into a relationship.

Hope to see a sequel with improved art if possible.

I heard that the most effect towards the success in the Japan was made by Hachiman and his character.
The word goes around fast there.

This is a really good news, so the season 2 is not a dream anymore.

Since they skip a lot things of the books, they can make the season 2 with that. And of course, with the new books.

Spoiler for Comparison to the book structure, but no plot because I haven't read them anyway...:

I was just wondering about that. I just finished watching the anime and went mangaupdates. There it says the anime is an adaptation of vol 1 to 6! I was surprised, because that would mean 2 episodes per volume... your comment makes things clear though.
By any chance, could you highlight the main differences/things left out?
Besides that, nice show and I hope more volumes will come soon( and thus a chance for season 2).

An volume of light novel need 5 or 6 episodes to be well done. This is how works in adaptations of light novels. Seeing the average of just 2 episodes per volume is evident that they skipped a lot things. And if you see the illustrations of the books, you can see that as well.

I had to respond to this.

I am in no place to say whether there will be a Second Season or not, but the main idea of OreGairu getting an adaptation was to lure others into the Light Novel series and seize the selling there.
Since the adaptation itself was quite a success as well, they might change their minds in the future and think about the animated version as a "stand alone" as well, not only as advertising, as far as it goes for DVD/Blue-Ray selling.

Theoretically, every show has the potential to have a follow up season. Practically speaking, it's pretty much based on a lot of things. What Relentless points out is one of the most important thing to consider when a show such as this rely so much of its storytelling success based on pacing.

I know what Relentless meant, I was only adding up what the adaptation's original focus was.

Roughly rounded up, there are two types of adaptations.
  1. One is the "Profit Adaptation". So-called Profit Adaptations are adaptations that were made purely for the sake of profit. They usually appear if one Light Novel, Manga, Game, Visual Novel, etc. was very successful, and want to cover other parts as well, and by that gain as much profit and fame as possible. One other part about the Profit Adaptation is that if the animation itself will be successful as well, it will obtain a Second Season in 99% of cases.
  2. The other one is the "Luring Adaptation". The Luring Adaptation's point however, is to let a bigger part of the community know about a specific Light Novel, Manga, Game, Visual Novel, etc. that they might have not knew about before, but learnt about it through the animation. That kind of animations are usually half-seasoned nowadays (11-14 episodes, usually 12 or 13). Now, this is where our agreement comes in action, we just haven't really said we agree on it. OreGairu is a "Luring Adaptation". Now, by that I am not saying that it will not get a Second Season, but a Second Season is more unlikely to happen than if we compare it to some series that have a Profit Adaptation focus. However, money makes the world go around. And as I've said in the previous post, in case you missed it, I said that if the Adaptation itself is a huge success, a new Season may come regardless of the main adaptation's focus, it is just "harder to come" if it was "Luring" at first.

So yeah, we basically mean the same thing, I was just adding up an "interesting" fact.

Pretty much every anime serves both purposes, and both are ultimately about profit. In all cases the hope is to raise the profile of the franchise in order to sell more merchandise, whether that's BD/DVDs, CDs, books, games, magazines, figurines, dakimakura, or whatever else. This is the "media mix". An anime is rarely funded with the intention of being a simple derivative work. (And this makes more sense when you consider the way merchandise pricing works in Japan.)

In the end, it's not so easy with this franchise just to make another season just to "cash-in", because the popularity of the franchise is tied pretty strictly to the emotional development of the characters and their relationships. It'd be really difficult to do that with anime-original content and to stay aligned with the light novels (since they're following a rather linear trajectory).
