I just remember, there was a Supernatural adaptation not too long ago, maybe 5 years? Well, either way, you don't get much more foreign than that

Well there was the "opposite" case with All You Need Is Kill being (more or less) being adapted into an American movie.

Yeah, cases of japanese stories being adapted to western movie is not unusual, despite not having clear examples on top of my mind to mention here right now...

I don't know if I'd say it is "not unusual." The best-known American example is The Magnificent Seven, a Western based on Kurosawa's Seven Samurai, and that's over fifty years old. Back when cigarette advertising was allowed on TV, Elmer Bernstein's rousing opening for Magnificent Seven was the theme song for Marlboros. When I first watched the film in 1969 or so, I was surprised to hear the Marlboro theme.

I don't watch much in the way of monster or superhero movies so maybe there are some there that I don't know about. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within grossed $32 million in the US and $85 million worldwide, considerably short of the estimated production cost of $137 million. It had a built-in audience of FF fans though.

Closest thing I can think of is Megatokyo...

Which is published as a manga in Japan...

Wasn't there an Anne of Green Gables adaptation at some point? For some reason that novel is really popular in Japan.

Are you sure you want to see Ce'Nedra portrayed by Rie Kugimiya?

So we're looking for anime based on a story from outside of Japan and also we're excluding the stories from before, let's say 1950. Also, superhero* stuff is excluded.

That leaves us with:

[2006] Gedo Senki based on Earthsea (1964)
[2014] Omoide no Marnie based on When Marnie Was There (1967)
[2014] Sanzoku no Musume Ronja based on Ronia, the Robber's Daughter (1981)
[2017] Mary to Majo no Hana based on The Little Broomstick (1971)

*for people interested in superhero/comic book stuff:

[1996] Mutant Turtles: Choujin Densetsu Hen
[2008] Batman Gotham Knight
[2010] Iron Man
[2010] Wolverine
[2011] Blade
[2011] X-Men
[2017] Marvel Future Avengers
[2018] Batman Ninja

Occasionally, I browse the custom requests and give input on interesting sounding topics. It's a treasure trove for ideas.
