My impressions are similar to yours. It might be because I haven't been into the seasonal watching experience for a few years, but I sort of enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Surprisingly decent was my take away from the first episode, even though it felt that they crammed in what was 3 episodes worth of content into 20 minutes as fast as they could, to the point where it felt confusing at moments. But it still was enjoyable, so I guess its fine.

I am kind of intrigued over how this show will play out, so I think I will watch how it unfolds.

I just hope that they had enough budget to pay for both the famous VAs and animation (Come on, China, do your stuff).

Because outside of the beginning sword-kick-into-the-stomach (very awesome by the way), the animation in the latest episode was definitely noticeable degraded. Of course, the ones before this one were satisfactory, which is why the change surprised me.
Still have my fingers crossed that it will recover.

Zhao did say some scummy things, but he was right

In the first place, the rebels are just too few, with Magic Users as the main force and they numbered less than 10 people
Even if they do succeed toppling the empire, they won't be able to maintain the vast 53 counties of the empire
The result would be the collapse of the new government and the start of endless civil wars among the warlords
Y'know, like after Qin Dynasty

They don't have to. Those 53 countries can take care of themselves. I doubt the anime will portray the Empire's ambition of global unification as something good or even desirable. The only reason the Emperor loli wants that is because she's being manipulated by those around her.

Sure, but she doesn't believe that might makes right like Zhao thinks and I don't think she will change her mind. In fact, I think she's gonna fight the Empire whether Zhao likes it or not.

He just want to be powerful so he can live freely
Now that the sisters are known to be alive, it extends to them too

Well duh, it's in the Opening Sequence

I truly think Empire is the good guy in this series

- The Empress is sick of war and dislike mindless killing
- The advisors truly want to rid the empire of corruptions
- The frontiers are filled with corruption and oppression, yes, but as said above, they want to fix it
- The soldiers attack peasants, yes, but only enemies'
Basically good governance with the exception of frontiers

As for the rebels, not only are they weak, but they are motivated by revenge and not to help people

Indeed, he's turned into quite a selfish type. Who knows what may happen to him in the end.
And the little sister finally gained balls to make a decision on her own. Not the best one, but still...

And next, on your favorite china version of a mexican soap opera...

@wuhugm: That's only one way of seeing things as they are. The empire is nowhere close to being good guys or such.
If anything, they're mostly power-hungry scoundrels ruled by a puppet empress. Again, nothing good may come from that.

I see no indication of The Empress being a puppet

- The world unification was the dream of the previous emperor and the advisors are faithfully abide by that
- There is a part where The Empress was losing her will and the advisor merely encourage her to do her Tenmei (destiny), certainly nothing like being manipulated
- The Empress gets to decide about almost everything, clearly seen by how Zhao the slave kept getting promoted and now being The Left Senior Engineer

Puppet? Nothing like that at all

However, the battles were noticeably meh and I'm not sure why the titles are still in Chinese instead of Japanese. But the overall quality wasn't bad, and you got famous VAs singing and all of that good stuff. And most importantly, I'm glad that they actually went out of their way to kill the stupid soldier that put his hands on the girl. Because... duh? She's like at the top and you dare hurt her? Of course the audience wants him dead. But yeah, I can basically tell that it will be the childhood friend vs childhood friend type of scenario. They both are on different sides and don't even know each other are alive. And then according to the ED, the younger sister is going to fall to the dark side or something. The top of the country calls you Big Brother and gives you status, clothe, and a job? I mean, putting aside stuff like that the little sister somehow did not die from blood loss when her hands were cut off. But still, gotta love that love triangle. The guy likes the older sister, the younger sister likes the guy, and the older sister cares too much about her younger sister. And you kinda get an idea of why the younger sister seems to go to the dark side. (That is my most anticipated moment, BTW) Oh, and no censorship on the bathing scene. Love it.
