For all the romanticizing of Oda Nobunaga, Isoroku Yamamoto, the Shinsengumi, and several others, I'm surprised that someone like Togo Heihachiro (who actually lived and became a legend within the timeline of Golden Kamuy) is not given that same level of fascination by Japanese pop culture. Togo should be as adored as Horatio Nelson is adored in British folklore; Western journalists were not wrong at all when they dubbed him as the Nelson of the East.
And by the way, you should see Togo on pictures from the time when he was much younger. He would be great material for a being an anime male protagonist. |

You seriously scared me into thinking it would be a fluff episode but it turned out to be a perfect combo of comedy and lightheadedness followed by some dark plot. Those skewers in the mouth were nasty. The second worst part is that the story tries to lure you in first with food porn.

This show just keeps getting better. Loved both the first half and the second for completely different reasons. Sugimoto seems to have gotten quite attached to Asirpa (who wouldn't?), to the point he doesn't want to put her in danger anymore. He did it for her grandma and the villagers too, after seeing how much she means to them. Really good guy. However, Asirpa isn't the kind of girl that can stand being sheltered. In fact, if Sugimoto explains that to her (assuming she hasn't already figured it out), she's going to be even more pissed off.
The 7th division's leader (I should learn his name) continues to be a scary and crazy bastard. His face-off with Sugimoto was quite chilling. I wouldn't to end up alone with that guy...

I don’t think it’s SJW since Ainu was discriminated centuries ago. It showcases their culture since they’re not depicted in fiction
If you paid attention to the previous discussions, you’d see. —— Funi has the first episode out. Ian Sinclair is Sugimoto and Monica Rial as Asirpa.

There's nothing "was" about it - it's still happening now. The Japanese tried to eradicate Ainu language and culture and there are still powerful politicians in Hokkaido denying it ever happened (with the tacit encouragement of the Abe government).

I guess we can say Sugimoto has a couple extra mouths now.
While not something I would recommend doing with at least a discussion I can understand why Sugimoto wanted to leave Asirpa. When she in the village she just seems like any other kid and mature exterior faulters. Emotionally you wouldn't someone her age to get caught up in all this nasty business with gold. Wow. Seriously, no. That's seriously not "SJW". Anymore than saying any criticism/questioning of anyone claiming harassment and prejudice is far-right bigotry. And this show too is not SJW, considering that, whether Ainu are oppressed now or not, at the time they were suffering from legal sanctions, as mentioned in the story. Not to mention that Sugimoto is not being declared in any way wrong on account of having ethnic connections to their current and/or historic oppressors, or for his opinions and ignorance of their culture, or his attempts to respect them by participating in some of their traditions. But seriously, I'd prefer to not talk about that crap here. I'm her to discuss an anime that addresses a period of political and economic turmoil for everyone, not to turn it into an argument between one group of political idiots and another, neither of whom can understand the concept of a middle ground.

Then what do you think "SJW" means? Who the hell even uses the term, and does it ever mean anything but "some minority is portrayed positively (or at all), I'm not used to it and I don't like it"?

^Problem is it's usually at the expense of the majority
This anime bears resemblance to that movie "Wind River" Good movie, but unreasonably harsh on the majority This cooking anime is not on that level It's just Sugimoto easily impressed by freaking anything
