Loved this episode. The sadness means depth for me. Not just skating the surface of this tragic situation, but at least dipping into it a bit. This is the kind of thing that makes this show, for me.

And I continue to think Hirano is even better this time around, with more energy, control, and sharpness in her voice, and as much sadness hidden beneath it. I'm a Hirano fan, and that started in 2006, but it was based more on Layla than on Haruhi.

As for the unfilled white space in the ED, it is certainly there, as ReneeBurossamu said, within the angle formed by Mikuru's legs. But I wonder if it is intentional. There is another space between her arms and her body that they have half-filled with the grey color of the floor, to show the edge of the reflection from the window. They might have thought that doing the same thing in the larger space under her legs would have been too confusing -- and all-grey too strong -- so they left it white as the least visually distracting thing to do. Maybe. Here's the image again:
Spoiler for image:
And by the way, the early shots of Kyon made him seem pretty buff, too, as well as Koizumi.

Nagato probably went insane a lot.

600 years is a LONG time.

A very

very

Long time.

Even Rika Furude didn't spend that long in her loop, and we know she lost it a couple times.

I think Haruhi would simply wish them back to life if any of the SOS Brigade were actually killed.
Unless she was the one doing the killing.

Great episode!

Regardless, I couldn't help but draw a comparison between this story arc and the movie "The Groundhog Day"; Whereas Bill Murray would end up in the same position as Yuki.

Awesome movie btw, if someone here hasn't watched it yet, I honestly recommend it!

I've been saying this forever.

Yeah, this entire arc is Groundhog Day. Bill Murray even goes insane, like, twice.

Figured the comparison would have been made already.

Don't check the novel threads myself, so if you brought it up there I obviously missed it.

Out of boredom:

Haruhi= Shmion
Kyon= Keichii
Mikuru= Rena
Yuki= Rika
Itsuki= Satoko

The Higurashi references are breeding like rabbits...

From a storytelling perspective, this episode was great.

The saturation and the quick cuts conveyed the feeling of despair and restlessness very well. Heck, even the somewhat abnormal amount of fanservice added to it: you feel something's off even before the big reveal.

The reveal itself was very unsettling, the atmosphere was oppressive and stressful. And one can wonder what 600 years worth of time loop can do to someone's mind... Nagato seemed bored, even desperate. That's a far cry from her usual stoicness. That's quite unsettling too.

Man, I'm loving this.

This is the part that really got to me in that regard:

No, I mean that Groundhog Day is a win movie and everyone should watch it.

The "poor camerawork" (all lovingly simulated, of course) in season 1's broadcast intro The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina 00 can be appreciated for the same reason... (if you're in the mood to appreciate such things anyway... )

EDIT: Kaisos above has said it better than me...
They do lens flare constantly, it's really nothing all that remarkable as far as their shows go. They do it even when it's unnecessary. Anyway this episode seems really hyped up and is getting a lot of praise. Gonna download it right now and see if it's actually THAT good or just the usual hype.

Addendum: Kyoani still has a ways to go to catch up with J.J Abrams on the abuse of lens flare though. Previously they were the outright record holder for me, but J.J just killed it with Star Trek.

Indeed, not only did he go crazy, he committed suicide multiple times just to see if it could end his suffering. Naturally, this didn't quite take, so one would imagine how Yuki was coping with it. One would wonder how YUUKI would take it?

Better wait for HD raws. The current ones on offer are... Well, let's say they don't look that good on my laptop's screen. I'll give it 3 days just to be sure.

Why would he act any differently?

You know... Humans always say, "It's better to regret something you did than to regret something you didn't do."

If there were a situation where maintaining the status quo would only make things worse but nobody knew what course of action would improve circumstances. Wouldn't you think that change, any change at all, would be best for now?

Nothing will improve the way things currently are.

A lack of action would only allow the situation to grow worse.

In that case, it should be okay for me to use my own judgement to assert changes, right?

I've grown quite tired of observing a static subject.

That's why...

More artificial testosterone and less artificial estrogen?

Kidding aside, it's easy to read a sort of desperate boredom in Yuki.

Interesting parallel to Ryoko, but given the expectations for THIS iteration of Haruhi, it makes sense in context.

Jesus christ.

Yeah, that's probably EXACTLY what she did.

And probably started acting exactly like Ryoko too.

Jeez that's terrifying.
