I really like the mecha genre, it's clearly the reason I've even an anime fan due to Robotech in my youth as well as Evangelion being aired prime time in Australia (8:30 pm Sat on SBS, was replayed the next morning @ 10 AM IIRC).

I used to pretty much only be interested in mecha series but thanks to the Rurouni Kenshin OVAs being released on DVD and Slayers which was my first fansub (guy in IRC told me that the spells where in English when he knew I was on the edge of watching subs... lol) my tastes expanded beyond just mecha.

It's still something I have an interest in but I judge all series on a case by case basis... don't really get why people want to dismiss something due to genre... Mecha has kinda declined in recent times but people are kidding themselves when they think it's a non factor these days... Unicorn, Frontier, 00 and Geass have been some of the biggest hits of the last decade...

You're obliged to bring up Gurren Lagann before you bring up minors like Unicorn.

PS: Not that I dislike Unicorn or anything. Although rainbows-out-of-ass was sadily omitted.

I think Unicorn has sold like 7x as much as Gurren Lagann.. but yeah that's another popular one of recent times.

Although to be fair, I think GR being a morning kids show also gave it franchise advantage over a simple OVA series. For Unicorn, DVD/BD sales would be everything, whereas Gurrent Lagann had a whole franchise of goodies.

Anyways, I agree that compared to the 80s, the golden age of mech shows, it's been a declining road.
The end of the Yuusha series in the 90s also had a large impact, especially in lower age bracket markets.

I tend to prefer the super robot variety to the more realistic mecha shows. My top 3 would be Gunbuster, Escflowne, & Gurren Lagann (hmm one in the last 3 decades)

Take out Escaflowne, add Giant Robo, and it's mine.

G-Robo would fit in that list much better, if you haven't check it out, I highly recommend you do so.
......Although it was more of superhuman brawl-fest than giant robots.

I have seen Giant Robo and while I definitely enjoyed it, it's not my favorite.

The 7 episode OVA, the Day the Earth Stood Still, is the masterpiece.

Definitely the OVA, I don't think I saw the TV series.

Trust me I know a lot of people who share your enthusiasm for it (hence why I watched it in the first place) but I guess it just didn't have the same impact on me as it did others. Although I definitely don't regret watching it.

That's one I have not seen but have always wanted to because I heard that is where Nobuyuki Hiyama gets his reputation for playing hot blooded characters and well I've been a fan of his since I saw him as Hiei.

I'll get around to it some day hopefully.

most mecha anime are Plot-Driven story that means they got more plot-devices and story twist and turns that fuels action scenes!!! but ye recent mecha shows balances with Character-Driven story too just like Gundam SEED and Gundam 00 for example that have almost equal amounts of Character-Driven story and Plot-Driven story

most people prefer Character-Driven story that is more about the characters thoughts and behavior, they like to know the characters thoughts overly so well, they like all those character developments/interactions that they can relate too

but personally i like more action scenes with less characters inner psychology so i prefer more Plot-Driven stories, i like Gurren Lagann btw its a balance of both character-driven and plot-driven story too

most other 'Mecha' series are stories/characters supported by big robots/other hardware

"Mecha" is typically a genre of science fiction that focusses specifically on robotics and/or machinery, and so, encompasses a wide range of genres. I'm going to have to disagree with that claim there: Transformers fits under the definition of being a mecha show, but is not the sole representative of their genre. As such, most other mecha shows discussed previously depicting hardware as a central element would very much be classified as mecha under the definition.

I don't care about Mecha. It's as easy as that. I don't hate it, but I don't particularly like it either.

Only Mecha Anime I watched are the ones involving cute girls. AKB0048, Rinne no Lagrange, Sky girls, loved all of them... thought about watching Aquarion Evol too, for the KanaHana role, but it already looked too mecha focused for me.
