I don't think either is better. I don't think I like manga better than anime or anime better than manga either. Sometimes I just feel like reading manga, and sometimes I feel like watching anime. I think that manga is the basis of anime so it's impossible to say anime is better ^^;;.. But that's just my opinion. Anime has some fascinating things like animation and voice acting.. I mean, in anime, without voice acting, even though you can see the characters act, they're nothing. The voice acting is what really brings personality to them. However, in manga, different things bring personality to the characters..

Personally, I prefer manga. The mangaka has more control over the story, where sometimes in the anime things get changed around (usually pacing).
The potential of manga as a medium hasn't really been tapped to its full potential (check out Reinventing Comics by Scott McCloud for a better explanation). It is pretty cool to hear characters' voices in anime, however. The music can make a good show great, and a bad show watchable. On the flip sode, Bill Watterson once said that he never wanted to see Calvin and Hobbes animated because he didn't want Calvin to have a distinctive voice. Calvin is you as a little kid; making you the one experiencing the adventures, the joys of playing in a cardboard box. The voice makes it someone else, some other child, and it loses some of its magic. It's easier to sit around the TV and watch anime than it is to sit around a book with your buddies. |

I think manga is better because its...
a) portable b) you dont have to rewind or skip scenes c) you can make annoying high pitched voices for them (fun to do with a hated character) d) you can read it under your desk e) cheaper f) fun to stare at g) is in black and white (somehow, I just like this better) h) you can gape at the beauty at 4 AM without waking up your parents/spouse/whoever the hell you people have at your houses i) nothing says I'm an Otaku more than carrying a backpack full of manga around and trying to style your hair like Bakura does. j) its alot easier to find decent manga because you can flip through it at the comic book store/Borders to see if it suits your tastes (unless you shop online) k) fun to see the original authors name on the cover, as opposed to anime where they give no consent to whoever the hell got the idea in the first place. l) you dont have to listen to the annoying theme song/ending theme song (whatever pisses you off the most [think the ending theme song for Neon Gensis Evangelion]) m) you dont have to worry about chipping or scratching the disc n) alot easier to find in general (unless you live in some small anime-less hick town) o) they show things that anime CAN'T. *coughYAOIcough* p) easier to study the real artists style q) you can NEVER HAVE TOO MUCH MANGA r) but you CAN HAVE TOO MUCH ANIME s) you can fall asleep reading it instead of falling asleep watching an anime on TV, then forgetting where you were, what the hell you were watching, what channel it was on and when it came on. So if you fall asleep during an anime youre basically screwed t) ya dont have to wait for the next time it comes on TV (especially when the re-run the series on TV because you forget where you were... see S) u) anime can make perfectly good female characters (Kagome) sound like they are on crack/helium v) theres more blood in manga.... (hellsing) w) okay, picture this :: you've heard of this awesome anime, lots of cool plots and turns and twists, you tune in on Saturday Night (or something) and you cant understand their voices! Manga can help you there. You dont actually hear the voices go too fast or too slow. and they dont have stupid accents (Shampoo from Ranma 1/2) x) manga curses more y) You can read it over and over and over again! ^^ ANYWHERE! z) manga doesnt draw stuff out longer. Like the pointless conversation in Yami no Matsuei when they were cutting apples at the end in the anime. (x_X) There ya have it folks. The A to Z reasons on WHY ANIME CAN REALLY SUCK. I mean, what could be worse than having to wait every week for something to end? jeez. Sure, Manga has its downsides (Damn publishers) but not as many as anime! ^^ If I insulted anybody.... too bad. I'm not really the nicest person around. |

Personally I don't really like manga at all. Even if I love an anime and it ends early with many unanswered questions that are answered in the Manga (Fuits Basket, Bazerk, Hajime no Ippo ect.) I still cannot bring myself to read the Manga, I always stop halfway through the first issue. Which is weird because I can read comics o.k from time to time and love to read books.
I think it's because the visuals are so lacking in Manga. No color, no real details in the background, overall the art is so-so at best except maybe the cover and one page inside. Also I think I don't like the pacing, I'm a pretty fast reader so sometimes the tension in a scene seems like it comes and goes so fast that I don't even really feel it. So anime it is.

well...
If you compair Naruto manga over Naruto anime...I would choose the manga and I think manga is better than anime over all because some Anime really Lacks on showing the meaning of Mangaka's story theme theres still some part of animes that i like~ which is the animated fighting sense voice and color etc~

For me it all depends on what anime / manga exactly...
I really love watching anime at home, good series, nice drawing style, characters ... and everything, its just so great! On the other side some series are just better as Manga, and you can carry them arond ( well if you have a laptop you can carry anime around too ^^" ) , but still... It depends on the series ^^" |

The main difference is that manga is by far the simpler format. Which makes it a lot easier to get right, but ultimately gives it far less potential. With anime there are all these different media streams functioning at the same time, and getting these to work together well is difficult, but in those cases where it is actually achieved there's so much to work with that you can achieve an effect that manga, with only words and pictures can't hope to match.

IMHO, it depends. Long shounen epics like One Piece and Kenshin are almost always better in the manga, just because there's no filler stuff. Similarly, titles like Berserk and GTO are better in manga because they can have things in the manga which are considered too explicit for TV.
However, I prefer things like Detective Conan as anime because it's more fun to play whodunit over a half-hour than the 10 min. it takes to read three chapters. I also like the anime better when the manga is either a follow-up, summary, or retelling of the anime's original story. |

I think I prefer manga because it allows a much better development of the story and charachters than an anime. For instance, it's hard to do introspective scenes in anime whereas it's quite easy to do so in manga. Likewise, it's easier to give details about the universe, it's history details and so on in a manga.
On the other hand, fighting scenes can sure be much more awesome in anime, but this is unfortunatelly rarely the case as they tend to suffer from fixed plans, fillers.... I also think that anime can make the viewer feel strong emotions more easily than manga through the use of voices, music and animation. All in all, I wouldn't give up on any of them, but reality is that I find more manga that I really like than anime series. |
