pretty solid show. the first time i watched the op, it stirred my emotions. i'm predicting the game will end in a draw. a testament to their potential, but not yet fulfilling their giant killing title. Gino's hilarious and left footed.

Giant Killing is not something you can achieve in just a mere less than one month...

For starters it's a "fun pre-match" game so win or lose it doesn't affect their rankings.

Second they need to beat some teams in order to qualify to compete against the higher ranking teams so they can't lose every match until they get to a top dog one.

Though the way this is going Top Tokyo will probably be their final opponent in the league.

Lose or draw, it has to be something enough to show that ETU isn't a pushover this time around and to set the mood that's to come.

nah, they don't need to win to qualify to play better teams. they already said that ETU is in J1, which i'm assuming is japan's top league. so either way, they'll play Tokyo Victory in the league. but the title will probably come down to the two teams. i don't know if its realistic to have them chasing it the first season though.

Having ETU lose every match after this pre-match until they reach Top Tokyo doesn't make a lot of sense.

How can they compete against Top Tokyo who will eventually head to the top if they can't even reach them by beating the other teams?

Sure it does. Very often reserves are younger and have less miles on the tires, so to speak. Fresher legs and bigger lung capacity.

Dont forget, before that, Murakoshi acted as their tactician and coach as well, so he more likely picked on players he already familiar with.

Surprisingly 2nd half bring a change of formation for ETU.. while in the first half, they play with a flat 4... they changed into a looped side 3-4-3 with 1 left winger told to hug the touchline (new sub too I think, #11 Yano)

Theres a lot of monologue for players which I dont understand sadly also the tactical instruction by Tatsumi.. he talked so fast I dont understand at all (well, even if he said it slowly I wont either )

Gino is a lazy bastard! grr.. in one instance, he didnt even bother to tackle Mochida and let him passed easily, which result in an offtarget shot by Mochida.

2nd goal by TV is again from Mochida, and this is one of the reason I hate playing low league games.. They need to understand their role in open play. Tsubaki ran allllllllllllllllll the way from uptop to defend from Mochida W.T.F.. He is a freaking striker and it isnt even a dead ball situation.. He have no right to be in his team side D box. I hope he learn the lesson.

The 2nd thing I'm annoyed is that ETU poor defensive formation.. They play a very very very high line.. It make Arsenal and Barcelona play deep lol.. They play with 3 at the back, and in one instance (the camera is high up POV) all 3 of them are over the centre circle... And they STILL pushed up (Look at the right side CB, going up even tho there's 2 players on his side (true, they are currently offsides, but he would never make it if they track back a little).. a simple over the top ball will destroy them.. From that single frame.. I was so fumed at the team.. not a single one of them will escape my wrath after match if I were their manager

The equalizing goal for the ETU came from Mister ETU himself.. carrying the ball from deep and scores a long range shot..

The game end was never shown, because the next scene was between Tatsumi and Murakoshi on the next day in some park.. dating Murakoshi reinstated as the team captain, I guess Gino lazyness display in 2nd half destroyed his chance for extended captaincy however, Tatsumi seems to explicitly stated that he wanted a full cooperation from Murakoshi as his soldier/warrior.. and never question his tactical decision. or sort of.

As Top Tokyo's manager stated, Gino is skilled but unreliable.

However, he did help Mr. ETU score that goal with his passes.

For the game end, a draw for ETU is pretty much a victory for them since while they didn't win they didn't lose either, especially up against Top Tokyo, the reigning champions for two years right?

Mochia already warned Tsubaki to be more careful and he really needs to take that advice.

This show continues to score, for me. Ep5 worked quite well, both the human drama and even the way they (quite economically) showed the play.

I didn't understand everything either, but I think Gino said something like "I've done enough work for today," as he let the opposition player by without making the slightest move against him.

Tsubaki was apologizing to his teammates at halftime for fouling the opposition player, and the short-haired tough guy who had been such a b at practice let him totally off the hook. Tatsumi later noticed how the team was coming together.

When Tsubaki made that error by coming back all the way and getting in his goalkeeper's way to allow a goal, Murakoshi got angry, but he didn't take it out on Tsubaki, it just souped him up so he took the game on his own shoulders and became Mr. ETU again and scored.

Later in the amusement park, Tatsumi at first seemed as if he wasn't going to give Murakoshi the captaincy back, but then tossed him the armband and said it was on condition he did everything the way Tatsumi wanted and didn't interfere with tactics. He pointed out to Murakoshi how much fun it had been for him to feel the cheers of the crowd washing over him and get the adulation of his teammates, maybe implying that he got that by concentrating on playing, and not on being the on-field coach. I think Tatsumi said that if he wanted to kill him, sure, but do it later (after the season?).

Another good episode, anyway, unless there were more problems with the football that I didn't notice. I know I'm vulnerable, but tears almost came to my eyes on the final goal and in the earlier scene where the deadpan little boy in the crowd told his father (who wore a Tatsumi shirt) that this was the first time he'd thought ETU football was fun (omoshiroi: "interesting," "fun,""funny")

Yep.. its quite a good episode and for me, it balance both side, tactical part( I'm fumed at the team but totally understandable) and drama for a good story.

And that little kid's comment.. it should be "interesting" more then "funny" if we take his 1st comment in the 1st episode, where he described ETU's play as boring. And the match is interesting even if we get a snippet of action here and there. The flow of the match and the ball are quite realistic.

Hence Tatsumi told him to remember the childlike gleeful faces of his teammates and the calls from the fans thanks to him just leaving the tactics to Tatsumi and playing his game, which should be his motivation.

Tatsumi's conditions for Murakoshi retaining the captaincy is to completely understand and follow the tactics stated. He will also need to be Tatsumi's eyes on the pitch and report any problems in the players to Tatsumi impartially. Also, he has to struggle and play his best game no matter how bleak the game is, to show an example to the team. And finally if he wants to kill Tatsumi, he only can do it after he has been relieved of the captaincy. That way, both of them have a motivation to do their jobs well: Murakoshi retains his role befitting his status in the team, and Tatsumi doesn't die after using a bad tactic that requires Murakoshi to do his job for him (flouting the conditions in the process).

Just one point, Tatsumi told Murakoshi that you can't kill me until I get fired.
That is how the last line by Murakoshi fits in;
"Then my advice is don't get fired."
Tatsumi is one tough cookie, he wanted Murakoshi to realized that he isn't suppose to take on the burden of being the leader and on the field he is just another player like the rest of them point made by appointing Gino the game captain since Gino is the last one who is going to think about the team and the team functioned as planned.

As for the kid's comment of "Omoshiroi" the best translation would be "exciting" since "interesting" is too bland of a word for a kid to use in describing a sports match.

For the little kid's comment, I'd still go with "fun," which isn't exactly a translation, but I think gets across what the kid meant. Words in different languages -- especially linguistically unrelated languages -- hardly ever cover the same semantic ground.

But I do think "interesting" would work, too. He didn't seem that excited, more like a serious little guy, so I'd put that next. "Funny" doesn't work there, I don't think, but is a very common meaning in ordinary speech.

I just watched the sub, and it was amazing! Even though I'm spoiled by the manga (speaking of which, the latest scanlation coincides perfectly with the end of this episode, in case some of you want to read it), the anime managed to bring in even more excitement.

One of the most important manager trait is half time talk, and Tatsumi proves that he's indeed a good manager. He managed to address the team's strategy and pumps up their spirit, even giving a one-on-one encouragement to Tsubaki, who needed it the most (and proves his worth at the first part on second half). Btw, Kina, it seems that they're changing from 4-5-1 into 3-6-1, and Tsubaki and Murakoshi is playing double volante. Quite a good strategy, as their noticeable in defence is covered by these two guys, Tsubaki with the stamina check the opponent and Murakoshi with a lot of defensive experience provides the cover. In this case, it isn't that outrageous for Tsubaki to run all the way to the back, although it IS a huge blunder. I do agree though, the defenders proves to be very lacking.

Despite Tsubaki's blunder, I can't really get mad at him though, I just felt really bad for him when he's doing everything he can to help his team only for it to backfire spectacularly. It will really shake up his confidence, I hope this will get addressed in the next episodes. The one I really hate is Gino - sure, he contributes greatly for the two goals, but no matter how tired you are there's absolutely no way you just let your opponent pass through you. If he only lose his captaincy, consider himself very, very lucky.

But the best part of the episode is definitely Mr ETU. From the moment he got the ball, everything was perfect. Loved the background music, his inner struggle and Tatsumi encouragement, and the long range shot, when the ball strikes the net it was truly glorious. Poor guy probably haven't scored for a long long time, I can really feel his passion in his war cry, and the crowd chanting "Murakoshi, Murakoshi" is really superb. Loved the heart-to-heart talk in the end too.
