Yuri Visual Novels with characters that are like real people?
do they exist
please tell me they do... Edit: Sorry, my attempt at wit failed and didn't receive much of a response. I've only played a handful of VNs and most of them I don't care for much. I did play the major Key ones and some others, both H and non-H, and most of them are just shit-terrible. ESPECIALLY the yuri ones--the characters are cardboard cutouts of anime/manga stereotyped girls with no real personality or depth. The only VN I've played with people that even feel remotely like actual human beings has so far been Katawa Shoujo. Maybe it's cultural bias and I'm only saying this because I'm not Japanese, but really... tl;dr version: Can I haz yuri visual novels with well-written characters (prefer H, don't care if non-H though)

Firstly, Katawa Shoujo is definitely not Yuri. That's getting into the world of nukiges...
Anyway, if you meant the highschool-romancy sort of feel, you could try some of the key visual novels. That's stuff like Little busters, Clannad, Kannon or Rewrite (I'd recommend Little busters first). Possibly also Cross Channel, Grisaia no Kajitsu and ef a tale of memories. I can't vouch for these, though, since I haven't played them. Additionally, Grisaia hasn't been completely translated yet (expect a patch in about a month or two?) and the Cross Channel translation quality is all over the shop (again expect a re-translation probably a month and a half from now). Check out Katawa Shoujou on VNDB and check its tags for similar concepts (rank by rating when you do this, otherwise who knows what you'll end up with). Also, check out VNDB by raking if you want a list of the best rated visual novels. There's tons of really awesome VNs out there, though; you'll definitely find something you'll like. |

I'm well aware it's not yuri as I've been playing/reading/whatever it. That isn't what I asked.
What I asked was there any yuri VNs that didn't treat their characters like props for the purpose of sex, but actually played them fairly realistically as people. So far I haven't found any, though I've only run through a few before becoming so disgusted with cardboard cutout characters with giant tits. I've already played all the non-H Key ones, and they were okay (I'm one of the weirdos who actually prefer the animated adaptations, so sue me). What I'm looking for specifically are VNs where the main character is female and the potential love interests are also female, and the characters are at least halfway believable as possibly being real people. It doesn't matter if it's clean or has H-scenes. I'd prefer ero but you take what you can get in the pursuit of decently written characters. Edit: I'm going to edit the title to be less confusing. Edit #2: Seriously I still can't change the actual thread title? dafuq.

I didn't realize this would be so difficult. There just isn't a lot of "yuri for gay girls" I suppose. It's all authored with male viewers/readers in mind... I can't get into yaoi no matter how hard I try--and boy have I tried. It's just too difficult for me to identify with the characters.

The "Sono Hanabira" series is certainly the most famous when it comes to Yuri VN, it is also the highest rated, but how good it actually is? Which is the best chapter? How much it is focused on the relationship rather than sex?
P.S. The thought that KS has become the benchmark for how a good Visual Novel should be is giving me a headache.

Sonohana is pretty much porn porn and more porn. It's the most well-known and obvious so of course I already tried it. Didn't care much for it.
What I was talking about in regards to Katawa Shoujo is that the girls (though not so much the lead, he's a bit generic-VN-guy) are portrayed like real people. If they act strange or out of character, they're called out on. They aren't just objects, "levels" in the game. Sure, the writing's pretty dodgy at times and the main character is about as interesting as a Ben Stein lecture (Bueller... Bueller...) But my gripe with most VNs is that the characters are not portrayed as real people. They're portrayed as either otaku stereotypes, cardboard cutouts or sex toys.

As for the otaku sterotypes, seriously...... The next thing that you are going complain is that almost every manga/anime/jrpg has otaku sterotypes in it.. Personally I found Katawa Shoujo somewhat average and it was even boring at times for me. I would never use that game as a benchmark for other VN's though, but it seems some Western people seem to do that because of it's hype and release in English Last edited by hyl; 2013-05-03 at 15:29. |

It's more I think because a lot of writers have a hard time playing disabled people like people instead of writing them as being totally defined by their disability.
Being a writer myself it's like... okay... write characters that are people. If you want to write caricatures, do superhero comics or some shit.

Spoiler:
I'll be the first to admit that I know next to nothing when it comes to yaoi... but is it really in such a better place? (note that there's a couple folders in there that contain a bunch of manga (mostly oneshots) not visible) That's only the manga I felt worth keeping... (though there's probably a couple on their I would delete if I bothered to comb through it all carefully) |

Well, there's a lot of subtext. Hayate X Blade ended up being especially disappointing in regards to the yuri content. They got put in the folder because they're drawn by artists who do yuri manga and were scanlated by yuri scanlators, etc... If the main draw of a manga is it's "yuri" I'd consider it a yuri manga in most cases... though as I said a couple might be removed if I went over the folder carefully, and those might be among them.

Being a Yuri hentai/eroge lover (not anime) I recommend Sono Hanabira.... It'll get your fantasy in a higher level.... |
