They went to te beach too...and they threw Mikuru into the canal/river during filming...I haven't seen her swim yet...play in shallow water...float in a tube, and ride (clinging to Haruhi) behind a jet ski.
We don't know if any of them can swim yet (Endless Eight I assume has some actually swimming in it, but I don't remember). We can guess Haruhi is perfect at it, one expects Kyon and Itsuki to be able to at least swim a little. Yuki? Since she doesn't appear to be mechanical, there won't be a rust/electrocution problem. However she spents all the time reading...even when water skiing. One would assume she could learn...though drowning that first time might be annoying.

If they don't use boats anymore, that kind of says something for how ridiculously advanced their technology is.
The real proof will be when they go on their next summer trip to Europe... if she doesn't even know what a plane is, then... |

Hover tech to the point of not using floating boats (because some crackpot will come up with the notion that a boat in contact with the water might harm the ecosystem).
Of course highly advanced hover tech could make winged aircraft obsolete...though the advantage of having the wings to provide lift without extra use of power for long distances could be a sticking point for keeping them. Base technologies might be obsolete, but the fuction is in most of the advanced technology unless there is a dramatic shift in how one does things. Unless there aren't any fish in the sea (or it is illegal), there will still be fishermen in boats in Southeast Asia or off New England, or any such place.

Or there's no ocean anymore.
Mikuru has absolutely no knowledge of how physical technology works. Remember her uselessness with the laptop and the guitar? If she has no knowledge of physical technology, she could be from thousands of years into the future. She was probably briefed on common forms of transportation, at least... |

High end transporter technology would be a long range thing. Using it over short distances is probably considered a waste of energy, or the criss-cross of energy patterns would overly confuse the systems.
Car, buses, and trains would have an analog in the future because you still have to move people around from one part of a city to another. They might look different and have different means of moving...but the basic feature of a box moving people is the same.

Drying up 70% of the planets surface up to five miles deep would take an awfully lot of energy plus remove the ice caps....or freeze the entire planet, would would make it just as dead and likely not worth the effort of a time travel group designed to keep the future on track.

That makes Mikuru a liar. Which actually could very well be the case. Post singularity where everyone lives in machines.

Probably this.
On a slightly different topic, remember Yuki's story in Editor-in-Chief? I always got the feeling that the "ghost girl" in the story was supposed to be Mikuru. According to Yuki, those without names are "ghosts". Fujiwara refuses to reveal his real name. What if they don't have names in the future? -_- |
