I don't really think this is a clear cut case between the Eighties and whatever passes as "today". There's character design I like, there is character design I find really repulsive and lots of stuff inbetween, but time has nothing to do with this. Take Beautiful Dreamer from 1984. That looks beautiful. Then go to Ping Pong from 2014. That's disgusting. For people not knowing those:

More mangaka autors without the generic 'manga' look below. BTW, Katsuya Terada, Ryoichi Ikegami, Tatsuyuki Tanaka and Junichi Noujou all had Anime with their designs in it.
Suehiro Maruo Naoki Serizawa Toshio Maeda Jiro Matsumoto Atsushi Kaneko Santa Inoue Atsushi Kamijo Natsume Ono Yorinobu Hoshino Hideki Mori Natsuki Sumeragi Kiriko Nananan Masanori Morita Junko Mizuno Est Em Inio Asano Hideji Oda Masatoshi Usune Katsuji Matsumoto Miki Tori Gotah Kingu Tanabe Gou Io Kuroda Haruhisa Nakata Q. Hayashida In the manga style, Sei Itoh and Kenichi Sonoda are my favourites. They're cartoony but with a lot of skill behind it. There is a mangaka with gorgeous cartoony art full of sexy lines about the Geisha life that I saw years ago but never knew the name. There's more styles in Manga that people think. Studio 4C use a lot of diffrerent designs in their shorts. |
