Anyone here apart of the 50,000 being sued from Bittorrent?

http://money.cnn.com/2011/06/10/tech...uits/index.htm

Massive sting on two movies and I was just wondering if anyone here was swept up in this?

Honestly, I thought MAFIA had given up on lawsuits and were trying to get legislation passed to just censor the internet.

They seem to be targeting those who torrented movies. Since I really had no interest over the latest movies this time around, I never really torrented and got hit.

But first it was Limewire, not it's Bittorrent.. Scary days are floating around.

Hopefully they'll stay away from Usenet for some time...

So far it has been the very large American companies pushing this, but I'd assume that Japanese companies will do the same after the ACTA treaty is passed. I wonder what will happen tot his site. Guess it will just turn into a forum.

..and watch all the media producers suffer even more financial loss in sales the next year

all the while screaming it's because of piracy (that same piracy they just killed a year earlier)

They can't really do much to that, and if they somehow manage to get their internet censorship laws to pass, there are several heavyweights that will fight on our side. Google, Microsoft, Facebook, pretty much anyone who operates a search engine or makes a lot of ad revenue would see their profits damaged severely by this sort of censorship.

Not to mention one of the gatekeepers' long-sought after goals is to get Youtube shut down. Google isn't going to stand around and let that happen.

Definitely an Enemy Mine situation...

Then you'd be interested to know there's been a recent bill introduced in the US Senate to make "illegal streaming" a felony :P

Yeah I'm pretty sure El Goog will fight this tooth and nail, since it'd really fuck with Youtube.

I DDL or usenet anything touchy or dangerous, but I still torrent most of my fansubs. If Comcast sends me any letters chastising me for this activity, I will speak to them in the language they understand and cancel my service immediately.

Didn't the last person who tried to muscle in on Googles turf with some law or litigation get absolutely crushed, it was some government wasn't it?

And ouch @ the suing, totally stupid really. Should only be able charge you the cost of the DVD that you take. Sounds a lot like what the RIAA was doing until the courts got sick of it and kinda told em to take a hike.

I believe that was China iirc. But yeah, if any inet censorship laws will get seriously considered (more so than now at any rate), some inet bigwigs are really gonna pressure the government to cancel it. It's pretty much like what's being said in the piracy vs second-hand sales thread. The piracy isn't doing anything to sales if it's not actually benefitting them, this due to the fact more people actually know about the stuff that's going around. What these execs are doing is taking the law by the letter and falling into the erroneous belief that any illegal reproduction damages their business, which isn't completely true. It may have been the case in the 70's, but things have changed now. That or it's indeed scare tactics as Alchemist007 said. Maybe both, just to be safe.

The "content gatekeepers" are being killed by the internet. They know this. They know it is inevitable. They are using every dirty trick in the book and even a few that aren't in the book to prevent or forestall this.

They're terrified that the internet's capability to cut out the middleman will eventually lead to their demise, and they're absolutely right. It will lead to their demise, unless they ADAPT and change their business strategies. But that doesn't seem likely, and good fucking riddance. I hope they all drown in red ink.
