Vivio suddenly became aware of the fact she was still in her sweats. Whoever had made her magically appear in a strange blue room should have at least had the decency to change her outfit. She crossed her arms across the Saint Church written on her chest. “Er... Thanks?” Vivio raised an eyebrow, the elf man watched her curiously.

He laughed, if it could be called a laugh, waving a hand in the air. “It's been a while since I've a guest of such interesting fortune.” His voice was lyrical, as if every word merely flowed off his tongue.

“Fortune?” Was he some kind of whack job physic? That's when it hit Vivio, it was all a dream. Of course it was, that made everything make more sense, she'd merely stayed up too late too many nights and now she was dreaming about very strange things.

“All people have within them a... path so to speak and yours is quite unique,” He motioned around the room, “But I apologize my manners have slipped away. I... am Igor. I'm please to welcome you. This is a please beyond time and space, beyond reason, and beyond reality itself. Only those bound by a contract may venture here.”

“Well I don't have one of those,” Vivio shrugged, “Guess I'll have to go back.” The sooner the weird dream ended the better.

“No need,” He waved his hand, a paper formed in front of Vivio, a pen just beside it. “Just sign.”

Vivio took the pen, she hesitated, it was all too real but... it was just a dream after all. She signed quickly and sloppily, “Vi-vi-o Ta-ka-ma-chi.” The second she finished the document disappeared as quickly as it had come.

“The coming year will be the turning point for you. I,” he paused possibly for drama before continuing, “Will provide you with assistance granted you stick to the contract.” Vivio didn't even read the contract so she was pretty sure that wasn't going to happen.

“Yeah yeah whatever

“... It's time for you to return to where you came. Here,” again he waved his hand and a small blue key popped into his hand which he then tossed to Vivio. “You'll know when to use that.”

Vivio flipped the key around in her hand, “What am I supposed to do wit-”

The room started to blur, the blue all ran together until there was nothing but Igor's voice echoing in her mind. “Until we meet again.”

Vivio woke up.

*skips off to school.

This happened months ago, but I felt like writing something about it. I'll warn, it blows a lot of people out of proportion, and accentuates everyone's negative. This isn't how I really feel about these people, but it seemed too good a plot to pass up... if you're into it.

It was supposed to be a happy home. Although many people lived there, they had never really gotten in each others' way, and generally the atmosphere was light and happy. There were jokes, and laughter, and although everyone had their own interests, they shared common ground; a middle ground, something they could all relate to. I was happy here, and I never wanted it to go away.

I don't know when the tension started building, when the cracks in my perfect life started to show. Maybe it was the anger that sometimes manifested, or maybe because some felt the jokes went too far, or maybe it was just the fact that we all... started drifting apart. I'm not sure.

All I know is... one week I had to go out of town, for a business trip. It was going to be big, so I had packed some things, left, and only heard about it in my nightly phone calls to the house. The cracks had grown into ravines, and I remember on one night, all I heard in the background was shouting, screaming, and fighting... as if leaving had finally torn it all asunder. I vowed to come back, but Satashi told me that she had it all under control, and that everything would be okay when I got back. She told me not to worry.

She was wrong.

On my return trip, I made one last phone call. Phean answered, and told me that a lot of us... were leaving. Never to come back.

My heart broke.

That was a week ago. I didn't leave my room. I was too busy sulking.

On this sunny afternoon, I heard the commotion. People were packing their things. There was more shouting; outside, Blue and Saint were arguing again, and even on the second story I could hear their yelling. It was loud, violent, and Satashi's futile attempts to quell the argument were drowned out by all the screaming. I covered my ears with my hands and tried to block it all out. It wasn't working, as more arguments erupted throughout the household.

For the first time in a week, I ripped open the door to my room and ran. I ran outside, trying to get away from it all, and ended up running outside.

"Stop it!" I yelled. "Stop fighting! This is pointless!"
"No, what's pointless is that I ever chose to live here in the first place!" Blue yelled back, her anger directed toward me. "You're all fucking stupid! I'm tired of this place of back-stabbers and liars! You're all nothing but a worthless bag of human skin!"

"Well if you weren't such a bitch!" I heard another girl yell... I think it was Shiny... "If you weren't so damn arrogant this wouldn't have happened!"

"Up yours!" Blue hollared, giving Shiny the finger.
"Take that goddamn stick out of your ass!" Was the retaliation. I leaned back against the wall of the house and closed my eyes. This wasn't happening, I thought. This isn't happening, this isn't happening, this isn't...

"Just go, and don't come back," A male said - Tempest. "You've all caused too much damage to this place. I never want to see any of you, ever again."

I stared at him, my best friend, his countenance almost a caricature in its rage. I looked away.
"Stop being such a baby," Phean said to me, walking outside. "Just get over it. Let them go."
"They're my friends," I responded, looking away. "I can't stand the fact this is happening..."

"Well, if you don't like it, why don't you just run away again?" Sanae asked. "You're so good at it, after all; instead of dealing with your problems, you always take the easy solution, don't you?"

"That's... that's not true-" I began.
"Liar. You're just as bad as them; the only reason you're not going with them is because you're too weak to make a decision. Just go back to your room and drink your problems away, like you've been doing." She turned her back to me. "Fucking coward."

The words stung, but they were true. Even as the words echoed in my ears, I began to walk back in the house, to run away from my problems. I ignored Tempest's mocking stare, Kriss's concerned look, and Satashi's eyes full of pity and disgust.

I closed the door behind me.
"So, you're not even going to put up a fight?" A voice asked. I turned and looked at Quall in front of me.
"...Even if I did, it wouldn't matter," I muttered. "You've all made your decision, haven't you?"
"Maybe you can change it," She said to me, looking as if she were judging me. I stared at her, trying to look confident as I thought... and slumped my shoulders, defeated instantly.

"I can't change anything," I said. "I wasn't here when it all went down, so there's nothing I can do about it now."

"Not with that attitude, you won't," She told me. "...you know, I thought you'd at least have the balls to convince me otherwise. You can't even do that for a friend?"

"I..."
"I thought so. Sanae's right, you are worthless." Quall sighed. "Goodbye... I expect we won't ever meet again."

"...you're probably right..." I muttered. Quall huffed her dissatisfaction and walked out of the door, heaving a backpack onto her shoulder. I stood there, stock still for a moment, and resumed walking. I walked up the stairs, stopping at the top and Lil put her shoes on.

"It will all work out after this, you know," She told me. "We might call occasionally."
"Does it have to be this way?" I asked her.
"Are you going to try and stop me?" She asked mockingly. I stared at her and shook her head. "Exactly. Look, I like you and all, but unless you grow a backbone, you'll never be able to change anything. Why can't you see that?"

"It's not like it would have mattered," I said numbly. "What can one person do to change the decisions of many?"
"It might have done a lot," Lil replied. "You might have changed our minds. But you'll never know, because you never bothered to try."

"...I'm sorry," I whispered.
"Apologies are just excuses. Words don't dictate anything... action does. And now, it's too late to act. Heh, sucks for you, doesn't it?"

"...would you have stayed, if I tried?" I asked, looking down now.
"...If I had known that someone else cared, then maybe I would have at the least considered it," Lil answered. "But you didn't even bother. And that hurts more than any of the fighting that occured. You didn't even act like you cared... and that broke my heart." She looked deep into me, and shook her head. "And it still is." She walked past me, carrying her things.

I let her go. I never once turned around to try and convince her otherwise. I couldn't even bear to try.

What use was it? The answer? There was none.

I continued walking. Wan and Riyuu ignored me, as if I weren't even alive.

I opened the door to my room, and instantly found the moment I dreaded the most.

Saharet stood on the other side, staring at me, her arms crossed. "So this is it?"

"...what?"
"You're just going to not even say goodbye." Saharet glared. "All the chances you had to at least do something, to prove that you cared, and now you're just going to throw it away without a thought."

"There's nothing I could have done. You would have left anyway. You were all so resolute."
"You still act like that," She laughed with venom. "Do you think it matters if we would have stayed or not?"
"Of course it-"

"You idiot!" She yelled at me. "You don't get it! At least try and prove to us that you care! Throughout all of this - this, the yelling, the fights, and the madness - you never once ever lifted a finger! You acted as if it were all beneath you, even though all you were doing was running away!" She poked her finger into my chest. "You never came out to deal with the problem, only letting it slide past you, and now you can't do anything about it!"

"But I do ca-"

SLAP!

My cheek burned.

"Don't." Saharet growled. "Don't you ever, ever say that you cared about us. If you did care about us... about me... you would have tried. But you didn't. And that hurts. Why can't you see that?"

But I do, I thought. You and Quall and Lil had shown that to me.
It was entirely my fault they were leaving with all this pain.

"I'm... I'm nothing more than a shadow," I said. "I can't act... I can't do anything."
"Don't pull that philosophical bullshit on me," Saharet growled. "You're human, just like all of us. You should have tried something. Anything. Would be better. Than this!" She pushed me, and I fell backward. I closed my eyes and curled into a ball, to try and forget this was happening. That none of this were happening...

"Pathetic." Saharet stepped around me, walking away. Only when her footsteps had faded did I get up.

I brushed myself off. I walked into my room, and shut the door.

I had finally run away.

Months passed... how many? It's all immaterial.

I quit my job. I quit school. I now existed. More people moved in, but I ignored them. I had nothing to do with them. They weren't the ones I cared about.

No... those were long gone.
I stayed a shadow. I never left my room. If I did, it was quick, and I was back in before anyone realized I was out.

Few realized I lived here. Fewer still cared.
One day, Tempest padlocked my room shut, opening it only to throw food in, only to lock it again. One time, he slid a note. "Grow up, and you can be let out."

But I couldn't. It hurt too much to do so. I couldn't accept this pain. At least this way, no one could bother me.

Kriss slipped me a note, under the door. "Tomorrow I'm leaving. I'm not coming back." It said. A footnote at the bottom: "You wouldn't care anyway."

Finally, one day the lock opened, and Satashi stepped through. She stared at me. "It's time to make a choice," She said. "Grow up and rebuild your life, or leave this place. Come to me when you've made a decision. You have an hour."

She left the door open. I closed it.

I lay on my bed, thinking. What would they do? What would they want me to do? What would be desired?

Obviously, there was only one solution.

In fifteen minutes, I walked out of the house, found the road, and continued walking.

I had run away. Again.

I have to say the news that new manga series are coming out really has a chilling effect on my desire to write anything. Unlike some people, who enthusiastically glory in AU/expanded-universe/original creations, I'm pretty well obsessed with original-continuity fics. Which means it's one thing to speculate about the way things could possibly go and in the alternative to write about things that definitely didn't happen.

Basically, ViVid is almost certainly going to kill my major fic series dead.

So...did anyone notice how long it'll be until the new manga start running, i.e., how long I have to finish Stahlkönigin before I end up giving the whold thing up as an irrelevancy?

And with bit of puerile whining out of the way, here's some crack inspired by magic on TV last night. I will warn people that there are oblique hints of NanoFate here, so those of you who are inspired to rants and hate mail by such things, just skip the whole damn thing, okay?

The Takamachi residence was packed. Nearly every one of their extended group of friends and family was there. One side of the living room had been all but cleared of furniture, while on the other nearly every chair in the house had been dragged in, whether from the kitchen, dining room, or assorted desks, to give the gathered group something to sit in while they watched the other end of the room.

Someone turned out the lights and the voice of Fate T. Harlaown rang out, amplified by her Device: "Presenting the one and only, the Mistress of Mystery, the Queen of Illusion...Vivio!"

Yellow lights swirled like spotlights, then suddenly the room lights turned back on and standing in the middle of the open side of the room was nine-year-old Vivio, wearing a tuxedo and top hat. She lifted the hat off her head and a stuffed bunny fell out. Everyone laughed and Vivio grinned sheepishly.

"As you can see, there's nothing in my hat...now," she said, showing the interior of the hat to the audience. "But..." She held the hat brim-down, then reached up inside and pulled out another stuffed rabbit, this one very familiar to everyone.

"Vita, you should be more careful with your important friends!" Vivio said and handed the bunny to the red-haired Wolkenritter. Vita flushed as red as her hair, but couldn't help but squeeze the toy close. Hayate and Shamal burst into laughter at once, Yuuno and Signum applauded, and Subaru burst into a thunderous explosion of clapping.

"Woohoo! Brava!" she cheered lustily.

Her sister Ginga, who was clapping with more restraint, grinned up at her and said, "I'm beginning to understand the things Tia says about you, Subaru."

"Aw, neesan."

The remaining audience members, however, didn't seem so impressed. The other Nakajima sisters just looked at each other in confusion.

"I don't understand," Wendi remarked. "Basic apportation magic ought to be within Vivio's range of ability, so why are people clapping?"

"Maybe because she didn't use an incantation?" Cinque speculated.

"But what was the point of the hat?" asked Nove.

In the next row forward, Otto leaned towards Deed and asked, "If Fate is calling her the 'Queen of Illusion,' does this mean Vivio won't get angry when I call her 'Your Majesty' any more?"

Nanoha swung the spear-tip of Raising Heart, crackling with pink lightning, towards the former Numbers.

"I'd suggest there be less chatter if you don't want the next trick to be the Disappearing Audience." The cyborgs fell silent.

"You know, given that the Numbers really don't have the cultural background to 'get' stage magic," Hayate whispered to Yuuno, "isn't Nanoha being a little crabby?"

"She's annoyed because Vivio picked Fate over her to be the magician's lovely assistant."

"For my next trick," Vivio announced, "I will perform one of the classic routines in magic: sawing a woman in half!"

She gestured theatrically towards the study door, and Fate wheeled in a long, low crate on a tea-cart. The 'lovely assistant' was continuing the rabbit theme by being dressed up in a bunny costume: leotard, fishnets, high-heeled pumps, cottony tail, and a headband with tall, floppy ears. Since it was actually Nanoha's costume, though, what would have been sexy on the Ace of Aces flirted with indecent on the much curvier Fate. Hayate wondered whether Nanoha or Yuuno was blushing harder at the sight, while Subaru popped up with, if possible, an even more enthusiastic ovation than the first time.

"Doesn't Fate-mama make a cute bunny?" Vivio asked. "But, will she be as cute after this trick is done?" she added ghoulishly. She flipped up the crate's two lids and Fate climbed inside, flourishing plenty of leg in the process.

"I'm getting the idea Nanoha is starting to appreciate letting Fate be the eye candy," Hayate chuckled.

Vivio closed the box lids, then shut the hasps and slid the bolts home, trapping the Enforcer inside. She then took a large, slightly rusty wood saw from the cart's lower shelf.

"And now to divide Fate-mama in two!"

She walked around behind the cart, flourished the saw, and began to cut into the box.

"Defenser."

The saw was blasted from her hand, half its blade snapping off.

"Bardiche! We've practiced this!" Vivio squeaked, cheeks puffing out.

"Sorry, sir."

"Maybe I should have used Nanoha-mama for the saw-her-in-two trick after all," Vivio mused.

"Why is that?" Fate asked.

@DezpPengiun In my opinion you shouldn't let the new manga stop you from writing your story. Sure it won't be canon but what does that really matter? It's your fic and if you are having fun writing it you should continue to write it .

Which is why all my current works are in the freezer at the moment, and Syn's profile target-locked for obliteration and rebuilding though the level of destruction is not yet certain until the release of the manga.

On the flipside, rather then feeling pessimistic, I can't help but feel enthusiastic. I always write better when I have canon material at hand that I can use, rather then rely on guessworks and maybes. I can't wait for Vivid and Senki, so that I can give rise to the true, genuine, kerokanon Syn Virage.

The Ion Canon is mighty indeed, destroying entire stories with but a single blast. Many of us know very well just how devastating this cam be.

But I'm too far ahead. I'll just have to incorporate Vivid and War Chronicles as best I can, without bending backwards to fit it all in.

Then again, I suppose it's a good thing that my setting is so far back. Like, 450 years back >_>

According to the artist's site, Force starts in Nyantype on 30th April. Vivid starts in the other magazine on 26th May. That doesn't leave you a lot of time if you want to get the story out first. I would hate to see Stahl evaporate just like that, but I can understand your feelings. It's like how some of the post-A's fics written in pre- and early- Strikers period now seem disconnected from the continuity.
But you're a very good author, so even if this epic comes to naught, I hope you can pick up the pieces and create a new and even better one in a few months' time.

It should not have bothered her, but it did. Really, she barely even knew the girl, she should not have cared this much. The girl was just another insignificant classmate in her life, a kind girl she had talked to maybe once or twice.

What was her name again? Oh, right, Hayate.

When she had heard Hayate had cancer a year or two ago, she'd thought, ‘Oh, that’s horrible’ and life went on. Hayate soon left school and spent most of her time in chemotherapy or recovering from it. Fate didn’t really notice her absence, and time passed. Nanoha, one of Hayate’s closest friends, made T-shirts that said “Believe” and sold them. All profits and donations would go to Hayate’s family and to the cost of chemo. Fate had even bought one to ‘support the cause’.

Throughout the year, she had seen people wearing the shirts, doing more fundraisers, and writing letters to Hayate. Fate had never worn her shirt even once. So today during class, when the teacher announced that Hayate’s therapy was unsuccessful and she had died late last night, Fate didn’t know how to act. She saw Nanoha crying her eyes out a few rows in front of her, and a couple other people grabbing tissues. The teacher said that "Hayate would be sad to see her friends depressed and melancholy." A part of Fate thought that Hayate would want people to be sad over her death and the fact that she doesn’t exist any more. The announcement read that anyone could go and see the counselor about this loss of a classmate at anytime during the day. Nanoha had immediately rushed out of the room.

Fate stayed calm, and expressionless. She was sad, of course, a loss of anyone on a personal level with someone is huge, but she didn’t cry. She couldn’t cry. She didn’t know Yagami Hayate the way Nanoha did, she had no personal connection to her. Fate didn’t have the right to cry. Chrono had joked to her after Nanoha left that he was betting on people to skip class pretending to be crushed by Hayate’s death. Yuuno slapped him in the face shortly afterward. And although Fate didn’t cry, she didn’t find it right to laugh, to crack a smile, or to just be normal. It seemed so wrong that other students were walking around, carefree and happy, knowing what had happened. It felt wrong to be happy in a time of such deep sorrow, and yet she didn’t deserve to cry about it either. Classmates tied green ribbons around their wrists to signify their support and loss. Fate received one too. Someone told her they were green because green was Hayate’s favorite color.

And I don’t even know why.

Once you get cancer, your death is assured. What cancer does is that it gives you a timeframe where you know when you're going to die, and can thus settle your loose ends and face death with dignity.

As a meddie, I am most tempted to refute that. Only less than 15% of medically-recognized cancers actually give a time frame to life, and if you use the more rampant and looser interpretation, less than 8%. Amongst those, there are almost 65% of patients diagnosed with terminal who live for a decade after diagnosis with proper care, both theurapetic and palliative.

It's not as bad as it sounds.

Disclaimer: 'Cept for that 8% which terminal cancer is 100%.

Cancer? Meh that's a bit off topic, but cancer is far more treatable now. To say all cancer is terminal is fairly ignorant.

At any rate, I have a new fic idea to do. I'm going to cast Teana as the young lead, Subaru as the Terminator and Yuuno as Mr hero come to stop her. :P

Any suggestions? Oh what is Ixpellia's personality?
