[GS/D] Italian numbering on gundams?

I've always wondered, what is the significance of the italian numbering on gundam models in seed/destiny?

Freedom - Dieci
Justice - Nove
Providence - Undici
Strike - cinque
Duel - Uno
Calamity - Sei

In Destiny, Impulse is also sei.

Are these numberings simply order they were produced in? I thought it was an EA thing at first with their gundams (GAT-X) but ZAFT gundams (ZGMF-X) like Freedom have them also.

I think its the number in the series...

Uno = 1 i.e. Duel was the first GAT-X101 (or was it 102??)
Cinque = 5 GAT-X105
Dieci = 10 ZGMF - 10A
Nove = 9 ZGMF - 09A
Undici = 11 ZGMF - 11A

Duel is GAT-X102 and ZGMF-X11A was Regenerate, not Providence (Who was ZGMF-X13A)

I thought it was the model number also but if Duel is X102, why it is Uno and not due (lol sounds like Duel!). Providence is X13A, it should be tredici (13), not undici. http://italian.about.com/library/weekly/aa042600a.htm

I heard somewhere that the models X11 and X12 of ZAFT's were experimental prototypes that never made it or something. But it still does not tell us why both sides used italian numbers on their gundams. Or maybe it's for keeping track of the gundam model kits? I never brought one so I wouldn't know tho.

Well, "sei" phonetically sounds like the Cantonese word for "to die" or "death".

Actually those plates number the Gundams by their order of appearance in the show (with exceptions), not by any model numbers or whatever.

Duel = Uno
Buster = Due
Blitz = Tre
Aegis = Quattro
Strike/Strike Rouge = Cinque
Calamity = Sei
Forbidden = Sette
Raider = Otto
Justice = Nove
Freedom = Dieci
Providence = Undici

I might have mixed up one or two of these (especially Blitz/Aegis since they never actually showed the plate numbers for those due to the fact that these numbers only started appearing halfway through the series, after those two were destroyed), but the rest should be correct.

We discussed the Destiny plate numbers in another topic before... But I guess they reset them for that too (though since Impulse is "sei" in Destiny, maybe there's one more Gundam in that show?)

Asran: Hey Kira, something just fell out of your shoulder chamber!
Kira: What is it?
Asran(Cockpit zooms in on little white tag on ground): 'This Gundam inspected by inspector #53'
Kira: Remind me to file a complaint. The cupholder came defective.

No, you're correct on Aegis and Blitz. The numbers are failry obviously connected to the EA's code names for the weapons. Remember that Earth originally called these suits G weapons. If you watch during the raid on Heliopolis, you notice that the trailers moving Duel, Buster, and Blitz are marked G-1, G-2, and G-3. We were told that Strike was G-5, so that makes Aegis G-4. Since Calamity, Forbidden, and Raider were also made by the Earth Alliance, it stands to reason that they would continue the G-# designations. The G-# essentially tells the order of development.
