Of course the sales are epic, that was never in question. What was in question was this outselling Bakemonogatari (it won't) and following volumes outselling vol 1 (they won't).

To use the newest SFIV meme (it was amazing seeing 9000 people go all in on one commentator)

I CALLED IT!!!

Let's not get over ourselves. Some thought it would, some didn't. The money is going to the same place so who cares.

Volume 2 is up 1000 units from Volume 1, Volume 3 is down 1000 units from Volume 1; I would say it's about flat.

Bakemonogatari is beating Madoka by the strength of DVD sales. DVDs are on their way out though. Take from that what you will. Here are the sales figures for Bakemonogatari, initial sales figures on the left, total on right, in order of DVD, BluRay, total DVD + BluRay for current figures

Bakemonogatari Average: 23,454+55,229=78,683 (6) (Shaft)
2009/09/30 15,513 29,000 24,755+58,048=82,803 Vol. 1 Hitagi Crab (Severely undershipped)
2009/10/28 18,731 39,000 22,557+53,396=75,953 Vol. 2 Mayoi Maimai
2009/11/25 18,607 41,000 20,901+52,135=73,036 Vol. 3 Suruga Monkey
2010/01/27 22,363 48,000 26,058+57,909=83,967 Vol. 4 Nadeko Snake
2010/02/24 19,804 46,000 22,698+53,844=76,542 Vol. 5 Tsubasa Cat Part 1
2010/07/28 21,066 51,000 23,749+55,978=79,727 Vol. 6 Tsubasa Cat Part 2

Madoka (total average would be inaccurate, around 73k)
2011/04/27 *9,097 53,000 11,542+66,001=77,543 Vol. 1
2011/05/25 *9,574 53,715 11,038+60,714=71,752 Vol. 2
2011/06/22 *8,528 51,840 *9,490+55,803=65,293 Vol. 3

Judge for yourself. But it seems Madoka will be slightly under Bakemonogatari due to DVD sales. But so far it is the #1 best selling BluRay anime ever.

Thanks for making it clear which medium has the most unit sales. It pays to look carefully.

How did StrikerS, which was the weakest of the three, sell more is beyond me.

yes, very impressive indeed. XDD

Bakemonogatari might be still on top. but that doesn't change the fact that madoka is selling close per volume in spite of the tragic tsunami. But i'm certain it could have outsold bake without it. XDD C'mon, don't forget the fact that it sold faster than bake. XDD

If ever a madoka movie happens, that would be the best way to compare against kizumonogatari. you know, kinda back to zero.

They announced it at AnimeExpo an hour ago. Release dates unconfirmed (makes sense, since the Japanese release isn't done and they probably don't know whether they want to release in singles or a season pack), no word on dub/sub hybrid or sub only (though they said Blue Exorcist would be sub only), and they didn't say if it would get a Blu-ray release or not. One can assume if it gets a Blu-ray, it'll get a dub, and vice versa.

In case that wasn't clear, btw, Aniplex will release it themselves. They didn't license it out to any other company.

Nice to see MM licensed! I do hope that they'll do a dub.

Anyway, please direct any more license discussion to the Madoka Magica is Licensed by Aniplex of America thread.

Talking about first week sales? Vol 2 will never catch up to Vol 1 period. Vol 2 barely outsold Vol 1 last week and it's trailing by quite a bit... (7k?), vol 1 also had a big week when Vol 2 launched due to the recall issue being fixed.

You're ignoring one really important thing.

Bakemonogatari Average: 23,454+55,229=78,683 (6) (Shaft)
[2009/09/30

Madoka (total average would be inaccurate, around 73k)
2011/04/27

When Bake Vol 1 came out there was 3,573,091 PS3 consoles sold in Japan, right now in Japan the PS3 is now upto 6.6 million consoles sold... Now you add all the standalone BD players that have been sold in the time to the 3 million PS3 consoles and that's a lot more BD players out now compared to 2009.

Basically my point is that if Bake came out today it would probably do 13+65 DVD/BD or something like that. BD is getting more marketplace penetration and as a result the sales ratio is becoming more and more dominated by BD as time goes by. Look @ Steins;Gate and Tiger & Bunny, they're like 90% BD at least... whereas something like K-ON! which use to have one of the most lopsided BD ratios period was maybe 75%? Can't remember...

I honestly thing the tsunami isn't a factor at all right now. I'm not saying this to hate on Madoka, I'm saying this because sales like this....

Blu-ray
*1, 51,840 51,840 Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica vol.3 Limited Edition
*2, 22,685 22,685 Tiger & Bunny vol.2 Limited Edition
*3, 22,197 22,197 IS: Infinite Stratos vol.3
*4, 16,731 16,731 Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai vol.7 Limited Edition
*5, 11,802 11,802 Steins;Gate vol.1
*6, 11,590 11,590 Toaru Majutsu no Index II vol.5 Limited Edition

Are bloody amazing... This is probably the first time we've had 6 series do an opening week of 10k+ Now if AnoHana had came out this week and Ao No Exorcist wasn't dominated by DVD sales (the fanbase isn't as otaku heavy as the above mentioned shows) you could've had 8 series do over 10k opening weeks.

If you look back in the last few years I think 4 was the record. Sales are incredible atm.... it's funny that people were saying anime was dying not to long ago...

And lastly Bake still has the 3 best opening weeks for a tv series.

I hope no one is saying that your hating on Madoka. Bakemonogatari is still on my to watch list anyway. Anyway it's interesting to see sales numbers so high for so many series.

You would be surprised.... most are just cowards and won't straight up say it though, they'll leave that feedback by other means

It's because they can't argue the point, if I say "show me another week where so many series sold as well" they wouldn't be able to provide an answer. You might find some comparable DVD weeks but Bluray is @ a higher price point as well.. and it's not like this weeks DVD sales weren't also great.. yes the economy is hurting but think of who mainly buys this stuff....

Index is like one of the most popular light novels in Japan atm, the second season has actually increased in sales significantly from the first season. Railgun as well as the increased popularity of the light novels as of now are the reasons for that.
