There's also the annoying trend of American publishers having close ties to certain Japanese companies that give them exclusive access. March Comes in Like a Lion is published by a company owned by Shogakukan and Shueisha, so Viz is the only American publisher that can pick it up. It makes no sense. It hurts the author by preventing competitive bidding, and in many cases means their work will never come out in English. But if you suggest the title to Vertical or Seven Seas, they'll flat-out refuse to consider it because of the Viz connection.

Couple new chapters available of this very interesting and underrated manga - kinda it would be on more people's radar. :\

Gotta admit that I agree with Enzo, though - I would LOVE an anime adaptation of this one!

Ch 35

Another chapter released, and we finally see Kyoko and the sisters' first meeting, however brief. Sparks flew to be sure, and it was nice to see someone sticking up for Rei. ^^

Ch 36

And yet another release...and yeah, gotta agree with the summary at the end: if only Rei and Kyoko could behave normally with one another more often. That brief scene was actually rather touching and even a bit sad at the same time....

Kyouko ... is an extremely complicated character that hasn't appear in the manga for ... quite a while now.

Here's the vote poll in celebration of 100th chapter release:
http://3lion.younganimal.com/3lion_cha_vote/
Kyouko did pretty well imo despite the absence. Hinata absolutely deserve to win this.

The manga's still so ... poignant (also still for lack of a better word) as ever. I want an anime too (or a LA adaptation, I am not picky), but doesn't seem likely as the story's nearing its end. Probably to the point when Rei can become "independent".

Chapter 100 comes with an interview too. Besides the "revelation" that the story should be concluding soon, highlight also include an episode of which she cried for 30 minutes after finding out she won the Tezuka award, but was very happy and her draft submission became late cause of it. This scene was illustrated too. Pretty funny. And sweet. And touching ("awww"). I guess the news was a great boost to her spirit considering she was sick earlier this year and actually had to take break.

PS: This is series is apparently not doing that well in Taiwan either despite H+C being successful, I wonder if shogi's just some sort of huge cultural gap or if people are just not interested in this kind of story anymore. I'm pretty young so I don't want to use words like "young'un nowadays" but maybe oversea target audiences have changed and these stories just don't sell anymore.
PPS: Chapter 101 just came out for anyone wishing to find out the current progress.
PPPS: I also can't believe it took over a year for Chapter 36 to come out since my last post.

Ch 38

Another fantastic (and yet "quiet") chapter...Akari is quite perceptive and sensitive! Loved the closing words of the chapter too, very effectively and (as Kunagisa said so well in the previous post) POIGNANTLY done.

it's my favorite manga for a long time so it sadden me it has so few followers-it doesn't seem to me one need to be "connoisseur" to apreciate it;those who can't stop to to complain about, for instance, generic production such as shokugeki no soma should first start to blame themself for missing such a gem.
my most Earnest thanks to the translator team without which my fidelity would be meaningless.
Truly,thank you!

Couldn't agree more - this really is an excellent series. We have had releases up through ch 42 (42.1 if you count an omake).

Recent chapters bringing to a close the matches between Shimada and Soya. Hafta admit I loved Shimada's descriptions of Soya proper ... very ... intriguing and artistic at the same time.

Rei's blood is boiling! I hope it doesn't negatively affects his game.

Why aren't there more people talking about this gem of a manga?

The MC has grown in to a really badass character by the end of Volume 10 (Ch 104). Thank you sweet character development!

Well that's one thing. But I was just as impressed with his complete shutdown of the deadbeat dad. No way Chapter 1 Kiriyama would have been able to pull that off.

Korean scanlations are on chapter 124, but I'm not sure if they are up to date.

Mm, I wouldn't call it underrated per se. Just about every sane human who knows of it and reads it likes it, and many absolutely love it. It is, admittedly, not all that well known in the West, but that has to do more with the dearth of available translations -- recently resolved (YESSS!!!) -- than anything else.

Although I was made to understand that Umino Chica's masterpiece is leading a revival in interest in Shogi, not unlike what Nodame Cantabile achieved for classical music, so it must have been considerably popular in Japan at least.

In the meantime, I'm just fangirling in the corner here, don't mind me.

Been reading a lot of this lately and I have to say, the dialogues and character chemistry has been very good. Quite an underrated series indeed. I'm up to around chapter 114ish now.
