Manga Taisho-nominated seinen Skip to Loafer gets an anime. Haven't read any of it but I hear good things.

Via Mangaupdate “Iwakura Mitsumi always had big dreams: to leave her small town, advance to a top tier university, and then contribute to the country before retiring back to her home town. So focused is she on her goal that she is oblivious to all the other ways she comes up short, much to the chagrin and concern of her friends and family. Can a naive country girl make it in Tokyo? “ Nominated for the 2020 Manga Taisho Award. Nominated for the 46th Annual Kodansha Manga Awards (best general manga). A truly delightful manga, I am glad to see it getting an anime adaptation.

Is that really that unusual? Was the case early for characters like Sawako in Kimi ni Todoke (From Me To You) and Mei in Sukite Iinayo (Say I Love You). Part of the character's development was having a slightly different look that was still different enough to evoke a more significant feeling. If this is a personal growth tale, seems fitting.
