Dunno if that qualifies for a full Darwin award. Stopping a cat from eating a mouse is a bit silly, but a lot of people prefer to throw the mouse away (for whatever reason). Still Bubonic Plague infested creatures is a little disconcerting. That shit spreads and doesn't let go; from rodent, to flee, to cat, to flee, to dog and so on. It's not really an illness you'd expect to get this day and age, it probably wouldn't take much for it to explode in a pandemic again in the right conditions (ie city slums). Kind of surprised its that treatable tbh, I thought it wasn't anywhere near that containable. A couple of those epidemic level viruses/plagues don't have cures. I guess he gets an Honorary Darwin Merit award, stopping a cat and getting the one in a billion chance of catching the plague.

I think the bubonic plague was as epidemic as it was because when it struck, people hadn't quite mastered basic hygiene at the time, let alone discovered penicillin.

You'd be (un)surprised what kind of remedies people practiced during the Black Death in hopes of curing themselves. If that didn't work, the more religious fanatics would go on a self-flogging to absolve them of God's wrath onto the populace.

I think otherwise, if time has an starting point, why would it not have an ending?. So far even space in our universe has not been proven to be infinite, the fact that the universe is expanding somehow goes against the idea of it being infinite.

You don't need to prove it's infinite. The uncertainty itself is a given until proven. So until we can prove the universe is finite, it is infinite by default. And infinity is a concept. It's not a existing value that can actually exist. It's the default declaration to anything deemed impossible to calculate. Such as division by 0.

No one has actually divided an object by zero. They didn't prove it's equivalent to infinity. It remains that way until someone can actually divide something by zero.

It can be argued that time (at least OUR time, we have no way of telling if outside the universe it is the same time) started with the bing bang, but it might have started even before our universe was created.

Not .. really. Its not "infinite by default" - the answer would simply be unknown. For local analysis purposes, you can "assume infinity" but calculations may not hold over very large distances - just like assuming space is "flat" is fine until you get near large gravity wells or huge distances.

Um, I'll refer you to the mathematics of Cantor, complex variables, and limit theory.

Here on the US side of the border I haven't heard a word about the bicentennial of the War of 1812. I've got my musket ready, though, just in case I'm drafted to defend the Vermont border against invasion. I know that the Harper Government wasn't happy with the pipeline decision, but this seems rather an extreme reaction, don't you think?

I'm actually more interested in what will happen in 2014. If the Tea Party is still around, I wonder if they'll march on Washington and burn it to the ground in commemoration?

i keep hearing form conservative commentators who they don't mind admitting Canada into the US. I wonder if any of these people have enough math skills to realize they would adding millions of liberal voters and about a dozen Left leaning Senators.

The Americans tried just that a whole year before the British attacked Washington, and managed to destroy York (now Toronto). That may be why the War of 1812 is much more well-known in Canada than America.

It has nothing to do with the pipeline's decision, it's just than Harper's nationalism is kind of english monarchist. In our situation it's a anachronism.
