You know, your comment got stuck in my head, and so I re-watched the episode. Based on what we've got here and other TV series, it's hard imagine a human brain can develop to this extent in complexity as such is Motoko. Human brain takes its time to evolve. The average human brain takes about 22-24 years to fully develop. I don't know how much advancement in technology the GitS universe made and the kind of effect such technology has on the brain, but the process to develop the brain still should be a slow one. Even though Motoko is fairly unique in the general setting of this show, I still think she is much older than 5-6 years.

I do feel she's probably a good bit older than that, but it would have been a rather interesting way of going. She, obviously, doesn't act like a young child. |

Maybe it's the translation I watched, but I don't recall anything that suggests she's only 5-6 years old. That said, one of the themes of the first Ghost in the Shell movie played with her struggle with a sense of self, ie: whether she was actually human, or an artificial intelligence programmed to think she was human.
I suppose the philosophical question of whether you can program someone to simulate "growth" that a normal person takes years to develop, is entirely possible in the realm of Ghost in the Shell, if this iteration of Motoko is in fact really only 5-6 years old. I'd believe it a lot more though if she was tied to the military, rather than being allowed to leave and live her own life, as one would imagine if she really did have 20+ years of life simulated in 5 actual years, she'd still hold too much value as a test subject to be let go (never mind the legal pickles).

Its a nice murder mystery as different individuals of what would be Motoko's team gather.
This reminds me of the twist and turns in a murder investigation in Guatemala where a "whistle blower" dies. Who dun it. Who would benefit the most and enemies are suspects. Interesting observation on Motoko's mental age, her actual age is a mystery. She liked her mentor like a daughter would. The super ego is tough young woman but inside is a little girl hence writing with a red coloring pen he is innocent. The Logicoma sounds too much like a high school girl in a SOL anime to me. I miss the Tachikoma voice. |

Ep 2: it wasn't bad at all, but I expected a lot more than what I eventually got.
Spoiler for ep 2:
All in all, I enjoyed the episode and will probably watch it again later, but I wish the story had more "meat". You can't distract me with shiny animation and slow-mo! Last edited by kuromitsu; 2013-11-30 at 18:45. |

This episode was well done. I enjoyed the OST as always with anything coming from this Franchise. I can't wait until I can order it on DVD here in the US. Though I don't know of any company that is willing to take them up and netflix axed this entire series and its films for moe crap. I am looking forward to episode 3. I wonder if they will continue to use the same plot device as episode 1 & 2?

Take my money Production I. G. Any doubt that I had left whether the story would remain the same is essentially gone after episode 2. This was very well done which continued with the GitS tradition without breaking a stride. Masamune Shirow, you can continue to draw porn. You aren't needed anymore.
The music is so good. I think I've heard the ending song for at least 6 times. I've lost count. The story was simply fantastic. Simple and told in a fashion that satisfied the scifi geek in me with a touch of mystery and detective work. Batou and Paz are truly badasses. That quick draw by Batou was just........ I love Production I. G so much for the effort they put in to animate simple movement. Thank you sincerely. I haven't been this high watching an anime episode since, well since Annie from Attack on Titan exploded. Lastly, just ordered the collector's edition from Rightstuf for episode 1.

Unless they find a different way of causing fake memories and illusions, then probably not. It looks to me like it's going to be a recurring element (I hesitate to use the word "theme" since it seems to be used more as a plot device here than in the films where it was heavily explored).

It might have something to do with current Motoko's own novice state of mind to how she is slowly coming to confront and realize the concept of ghost. The current Motoko is still not adept at using all her enhancement and what she will be capable of in the future, i.e. the version of Motoko we see in GitS SAC and SAC II. The best feature for this series has always been whenever the story is trying to explore consciousness/ghost/soul etc... So this particular theme should be a recurring one considering this is when Motoko starts to come to her own as she starts to understand the deal with ghost through many of her experience.

So I hope that in the next episode they'll have a different type of story, preferrably one that doesn't involve memory manipulation. |
