Yes, you've been spoiled by reading somewhere where warnings explicitly state DO NOT READ. Pray tell us why we should bother to tell you right now? How fair is that to people who waited all this time trying not to look at these threads that warns of the major spoilers in them? Just because you chose to be spoiled does not mean that we must provide you with everything.

I have tried to keep things considerate to all people in this thread who were interested in this anime. I provided them with TIPS and Frederica Bernkastel's poems to help them get the closest "feel" to the game that us game players had. We didn't HAVE TO DO THIS, but we chose to. Why? Because the TIPS aren't spoilers but they were a pivotal part of the Higurashi story. That's why they were left out in the open as each episode aired (carefully checking which TIPS to put up in correspondence to each aired episode) so as not to reveal anything that people shouldn't know yet.




All things set aside, your answers will be listed very soon, but only after the final episode airs next week. Wait and suffer - that's how as Frederica would say: I cannot quench your thirst. If you can't wait that long, learn Japanese and buy the game.

I just finished playing Minagoroshi and I have to say there were few things with which I’m kind of disappointed, there were also things with which I’m amazed.

Spoiler:

First “disappointment” is Rika’s way of thinking, in every “arc” she lived through, Tomitake’s body has been always found in the same place. But when she has told Tomitake, Takano and Oishi about future murders, place changed. So it is very possible that one of those three was involved, since it couldn’t be Tomitake and she decided to trust Oishi there was only one choice left. With this, staying in her house under Yama’s guard was like being a sitting duck, without giving herself any chances from the beginning. Second, why Rika didn’t ask Sonozaki’s for help, except police they were only party which were able to give her some serious chances. After Rika explained everything wouldn’t it be obvious for Mion and Shion to ask for backup? I believe Kasai is a pro and Takano’s men would have some serious problems with him. Not to mention that Sonozaki’s estate would have been a perfect place to defend, at the other hand Rika’s house was most probably infiltrated earlier and was disadvantageous from the beginning. Third, Hanyuu, that’s completely hard to understand, Rika’s biggest problem was the lack of knowledge, Hanyuu is a perfect “tool” to obtain this knowledge.
Fourth, Takano’s motive, I really hoped she isn’t only a madwoman, that there is something deeper in her actions. Her ambition to “revive and become god and this way write her name in history” was kind of clichéd and IMO disappointing, but I have to say, except this, that last scene with destruction of Hinamizawa was good, really good.
Fifth, I hope “Queen theory” is wrong, may it be that knowledge about Rika’s fate was the only indicator? I mean, if people believed in legend, a fear of Oyashiro’s wrath and knowledge that it might have been done by any other villager were enough to trigger people even without meeting second condition?
Good points – almost everything else, I loved when Keichi was able to correct his mistake and give a doll to Mion, Shion’s relationship with Satoko ("she’s like family to me"), Akane “bringing” Onibaba’s approval, moment when Satoko was able, thanks to Rika’s words, to break her fate. Last scenes, where miracle couldn’t have been achieved, were really heartbreaking. I hope if Deen will pick up this chapter, they won’t rape it, Minagoroshi deserves at least 10 episodes.

Minagoroshi was more of a "first try" than anything else, it would be cheesy if everything went Rika's way. You'll find out in Matsuribayashi that it's not as easy as you think for Rika to "win".

Are you really playing the game normally...? You're not supposed to be able to get that piece until you have completed the game at least once....

After completing the first 50 pieces (after seeing Matsuribayashi-hen's piece), a new piece called "かけら屑" should appear. After watching that, choose 祭囃し編のかけら again, and the story should continue.

It's been announced a while ago, but seeing as how Ryukishi-san just posted the jacket illustrations up, I figured I'll make a post here too.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei

The biggest disappointment I had with Matsuribayashi-hen personally was the lack of a proper after-story (epilogue). Although Ryukishi-san himself mentioned that he did it on purpose so that the players can imagine their own endings, a lot of people probably still would've wanted to see something presented in physical form. Which is why I was pretty happy to hear that one is being written. Now that it's done, all that's left is the long wait until winter comiket.

As for the scenario name, 賽殺し編.... Sai...koroshi? A pun on saikoro (dice)?

Alright, I know the disaster occurs whenever Rika is watanagashi'd. This makes it seem like the citizens are not normal and are performing some sick ritual so the government takes out the village. So why does it have to be Rika? How come someone else won't do? is it because of the queen carrier aspect? Does that mean Hinamizawa syndrome really is a parasite?

Ryuu-chan created first 5 titles in mixture of horror/suspense, then Tsumihoroboshi and later are more of "燃え" stories - and both of them are now critisized by similer reason to that poem.
Perhaps Ryuu-chan's tired of responding to players' requests that whatever he do he always get negative reacton from part of fan-base?
If so, does "water" mean sub-scenarios like Saikoroshi-hen or Daybreak-hen? or he meant for entirely different stuff?

Maybe I'm thinking too much or L5, but now that think about it, I can't stop reading it in that way.

I don't think the poem has anything to do with the complaints. Ryukishi-san has never bent his stories just because certain fans wanted to see something. Besides, Rei is meant to be a form of gratitude from Ryukishi-san to the fans who have gathered throughout the 4 and a half years that it took to complete the series.

Either way, it's quite clear that Ryukishi-san is going to put the Higurashi series to rest (for now) with this final "epilogue" scenario.

The meaning of the poem is obviously "selfishness and greed ultimately results in loss". And it's probably referring to something in the story. Really though, Frederica's poems are meant to be read once in the beginning, and then once more after the completion of the scenario. So just be patient and wait for it.

In the middle of tsumihoroboshi. It's so much clearer than the anime, that Rena is going nuts. A lot of the "answers" that Mion / Sensei provide to balance out the delusions are also new to me.

The turning point in tsumihoroboshi for me is:

Shion and Kasai discussing that Onibaba commanded Rena to be put under the protection of the family. Shion wonders if Rena has to get her nails pulled out and has a good laugh about it.

THAT MEANS, in this arc Shion also had her nails pulled because of Satoshi.

But she didn't go mad. Rena did.

The trigger must have been the notebooks. Shion met Takano in the library in Meakashi. This time Rena met Takano. Takano is probably the schemer behind all this...

WOW. Shed manly tears at K1's fateful epiphany scene.

1. OMG. K1 gave the doll to Mion! How many years and how many worlds did it take for this to occur? I pumped my fist in the air when this happened.

2. I got chills when K1 got Ohagi Flashbacks. It's coming together...? Rena's dad got a job?! She's well enough to talk about her parents' divorce and her dad's 悪いお店 addiction offhandedly, and she holds the power of the purse now? "If I didn't consult Mion, I would have killed that bitch"...
Either this chapter will be a triumph, or I'm being set up for another big fall here.

3. Oh *$%&! Now Rena's getting Parallel Universe Flashbacks! And K1 repeated his words of hope from the last arc...

4. We've managed to bypass most of the major causes of the past tragedies, but I assume that we still have to break through Takano's notebook trap, as well as Tomitake and Rika's deaths. Well, we'll get to that eventually I hope. I still think she's the "key"... even though Takano did Ni-Paa I still don't trust her. Even if she does Neko-mimi buruma and drinks milk out of a saucer.

5. So that's why Hanyuu doesn't want Rika to drink. I'm beginning to think Frederica (the poet) is actually Hanyuu. They share the same physical container after all... and "Punishment Kimchi"? Genius.

6. Speculation. Was Rika's mutilation in previous arcs Kantoku's desperate attempts to find a cure?

7. I can totally picture Oryou, Akane, Shion + Mion around a kotatsu playing mahjong and eating mikan in winter. And What The... Mion breaks the 4th wall by talking about NScripter! And I'm totally going to try that cheating trick at mahjong.

8. It took me up to now to realize those are horns on Hanyuu, and not moe purple ribbons. And I read the tips too.

Minagoroshi Part 2 Notes

1. Crap. Here comes the fall. Satokoooo... If Rika can't break through this one (perhaps with the help of K1, Rena, Sh/Mion), then 精神の死 will be a given. But having gone through 6 arcs, I'm afraid to say that I have the same feelings as Rika. The faster I give up this world, the sooner I will get to see Satoko's smile again...

2. Should this scene be called "K1 does OJ Simpson: IF I DID IT: Tatarigoroshi"?

3. Fucking bureaucrats. Everybody just wants to cover their own asses, even the boss.

4. Maybe K1's "Reality Marble" can do the trick? Tons of O乳O学生メイド fans over there in Japan -_-;; XBOX 360? Playstation 3? K1's powers > Rika's powers.
4b. Probably the only scene in a Japanese game where people cheer for the KKK >.>

5. Last Boss: Oryou?! I can't believe K1 managed to convince Kimiyoshi.

6. Akane is the man! "Here are my daughters, Shion and Mion. Whichever you want, omochikaeri! Just call me mom!"

7. I can't believe the number of barriers K1 and co. had to overcome to save Satoko. Every relationship he built up came into play. There's still one more crazy obstacle, though... Watanagashi.

Minagoroshi Part 3 Notes

1. Tomitake is gonna die. Again. I'm one of those who thinks that Takano won't die no matter what, but we'll see.

2. I knew it! I knew it! Takano is the bad guy! But is she also a multi-dimension being like Rika?

3. Speculation: The Great Hinamizawa Disaster is the Japanese government bombing the entire place to contain the "outbreak" of Hinamizawa Syndrome.

4. Speculation: Rika will win if she doesn't get killed by the Okonogi Commando Squad.

5. Great. Rika will tell everybody about her problems, and then the end result is Minagoroshi.

6. Oh great. An ultra-nationalist, militarist organization is behind Irie's research. Just what I needed, more politics in my doujinshi. OK, from the 60's onwards "the notions of reviving the Greater East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere and beating back the Westerners started to fade away". Still too much politics.

7. Please explain why Rika is the Queen Bee / Bomb Fuse. I can accept that killing her is like killing the Overmind of the Zerg, but Hinamizawa isn't a hive mind, unlike bees.

Matsuribayashi-hen notes (Just finished Minagoroshi)

I'm glad I have the PIECES thread to rely on ^^

Spoiler for Prologue:

1. Is this prologue about Miyo Takano? The "God descending" line reminded me of the TIPS. Perhaps the grandpa is Hifumi Takano?

2. I don't agree with Koizumi-sensei, that without the Marco Polo Bridge that Japan would have invaded the USSR. Except for the highest general, practically all of the Kwantung Army's leadership was focused against China. The anti-Soviet factions were back in Tokyo. The Manchurian Incident was orchestrated by elements of the Kwantung Army, as well as the assassination of Warlord Zhang Zuo Lin. But of course this is all a counterfactual argument (i.e. a What If scenario, which professional historians really detest. The IF world.)

Now, the Marco Polo Incident itself. I'm glad that the game notes that it has never been conclusively proven who fired the shots in the night. There are some "TIPS" in history, like the message that the American naval attache in Beijing received that night, noting that "...radicals will begin firing at the Japanese at 19.00". But it could be either way, with all the different factions at play in the area at the time. Kwantung Army, KMT, Chinese Communists, all the different shades of colonist, businessmen, peasants...

Having the missing private be from Hinamizawa is an interesting retelling of history. I love these historical fiction tricks, and this one opens up a whole can of worms. Whether or not he died in battle or due to L5 effects is unimportant, but if he had fired at least some of the shots in the night due to L3/L4 effects of Hinamizawa Syndrome, くすくすくす．．．it would be natural for people to suppress Hifumi's research.

3. So that's why Takano (Tanashi Miyoko?) killed Rena so quickly after the latter's last words in Minagoroshi-hen. "You can't be Oyashiro-sama. Because Oyashiro-sama, iru yo"

4. What kind of facility was Miyo imprisoned in, that punishments are censored even in Higurashi?

5. I'm still wondering how she managed to remember the telephone number. I guess she rolled another 6.

6. This fast forward version of one of the title songs is so good.

7. She achieved her Grandfather's goal of becoming a god. But how does creating the Great Hinamizawa Disaster make her a god? Answer: by defeating the god of Hinamizawa.

1. Hanyuu PoV? Win. But still no Mion :/

2. This puzzle will make me cry until I put down my pride and go to the thread.

3. Oh shit- did Takano take advantage of the legends of "onikakushi", in order to provide Irie with living victims to search for parasites? If this is true then this explains why Irie committed suicide with sleeping pills.

4. Chibi Rika "foretells" the coming of the 白馬の王子, a.k.a. K!

5. Still not convinced of the parasite/Queen theory even with the parallels to other mass suicides.

6. I was right about #3, at least for "Sacrifice #1". I wonder where Takano disposed of the right arm...

7. Cerebral fluid from Rika? Ughhh

8. Satoko pushed her parents off the cliff as a result of L5 syndrome? It's certainly very possible, almost certain, even, within the context of Higurashi no naku koro ni. But then again the specter of the slippery slope is raised again here. Where can one draw the line between self-will and the parasite? Is paranoia caused entirely by the parasite's biochemical reactions? It's a very disturbing theoretical question. Satoko... But if I am to be a devil's advocate, how can a little kid like Satoko manage to push both parents off the cliff, even with the element of surprise and the intent to kill?

There's probably a part of all of us that wants to reject the notion that we are all meatbags, and consciousness is just a function of microbes or parasites that just happen to live within us. Hinamizawa Syndrome posits that "only" paranoia/violence stemming from paranoia is caused by the parasites, but what if this could be extended to all consciousness? That would be damning to humankind indeed.

9. Okonogi! Hahaha he has such a rakish pose with the wink and ponytail. And he's so happy that he finally gets to erase somebody! So in the years between Rika's mother's disappearance and the kidnapping of the grandson, perhaps Okonogi and co. have been working as electricians and landscapers? Ahaha.

10. So much information. I feel like I'm reading a huge spoiler thread instead of the game itself. At least I don't have to speculate as to whether these pieces are lies, half-truths, or whatever. They were given to me by a god-like existence (the collective Furude Rika mentioned in Minagoroshi-hen's prologue) to play with, so I can just take them at face value.

11. I guess the Gomenasai's that L5-K1 heard in Onikakushi-hen were not only from Rena, but also from Hanyuu?

12. Ohh I love this track. It's the first one that plays in the prologue, and when the bukatsu is created. It creates such an idyllic impression, that this is a secluded oasis in the midst of this mad, mad, mad world. I'm happy that both Miyo and Satoshi have been the recipients of this track.

13. So Satoshi really did it, under L5 prodding. And he inadvertently became a sacrifice...and his tracks cleaned up by Okonogi Landscapers.

14. So there was no intention of Minagoroshi from the beginning. Takano was turned onto this path by Koizumi-sensei's death, which forced her hand. Of course, from the beginning Takano had become one without morals...
Then what is the 最善手? A world where the research could be conducted with morals, thereby keeping the Houjou siblings alive and sane, where the Syndrome could be eradicated first in secret and then published publicly afterwards?

15. WHOA. K1's dad saw Hanyuu? I guess hentai-oyaji's have very special eyes. ちなみに、これが最高のピースだった。

いよいよここに来た。　まっすぐGO!

Spoiler for Part 1:

1. Oh my Hanyuu, I'm melting at the uber-moeness of Hanyuu in gakusei cosplay. I hope she loses and has to wear Rika's punishment outfits (猫耳＋スクミズ＋猫尻尾) then I'd die happy.

1b. If Horie Yui is voicing her...

2. /b/akasaka's theme is uhh... -_-;; Go go go!

3. WHAT THE- "Yeah, that's right, K1 has a horn between his butt cheeks as well! It's hard and points up-" MION-OJISAN!

4. Rika... she forgot. The final piece... This puts me, the reader, in the uncomfortable position of actually knowing more than this Rika and this Hanyuu (but less than Frederica). How can I step onto the stage and give my information to them? Arghh

5. "Really? How much did old man Koizumi give her?"..."One Billion Yen" *pinky finger to lips*. This was a lot in 1983. Now, you need a thousand billion USD to be a credible villain.

6. Onibaba just coming up to Kantoku and telling him that the Dam Battle is over kind of cheapens K1's efforts in Minagoroshi-hen. I understand that this final arc is all about saving Rika and breaking Rule Y, but it's like Rules X and Z never existed here. One could argue that with Minagoroshi-hen, those two rules (paranoia and mistrust of Sonozakis) ceased to exist altogether. That's great, but it means Shion isn't an older sister to Satoko any more. She's become a mere side character that isn't even in on the whole saving Rika operation.

7. Great touching graveyard scene for Ooishi. He needed that closure. Same goes for Takano's philosophical musings after she unsuccessfully tries to contact Tomitake.

Spoiler for June 20 +:

Ooishi is the man. I can picture him throwing 大高くん out of the office with his belly alone.

Okay, that was a really cheesy entrance by Tekken Akasaka. And a really cheesy line "....weak."
