TSURU-NE [Kazemai High School Japanese Archery Club]

Light novel Tsurune: Kazemai High School Japanese Archery Club is getting a TV anime for 2018. To be animated by Kyoto Animation.

Plot Summary
Quote:
“I want to make a beautiful sound with my bowstring.”
Narumiya Minato was a member of his middle school Japanese archery club. After being selected to participate in the team match, he progressed through to the Prefectural Finals, but after something happened to him, his team lost their final middle school match… After that, Minato decided to never draw his bow again and practically fled to his local high school, Kazemai High.
There, Minato is invited to join the archery club by fellow students Takehaya Seiya and Yamanouchi Ryouhei, his childhood friends, but he turns them down and goes home alone. Afterward, to clear his head, he goes out for a bike ride and wanders by chance into the ‘Yata no Mori Archery Range’ where he meets the master archer Takigawa Masaki, aka Masa-san.
Despite having told Seiya, “I’m never doing archery again!” Minato starts to spend time at the Yata no Mori range, awakening to feelings of wanting to draw again. ‘I want to draw again. I want to make that beautiful sound with my bowstring again!’
Minato resolves to face the thing that caused him to withdraw from archery and stand once more before the target.
Waiting for him in the Kazemai High Archery Club are of course Seiya and Ryouhei, but also Onogi Kaito, who reviles Minato, and the sparkling prince Kisaragi Nanao. Minato will aim for the Prefectural Championship with these friends.

First episode is out.

Wow, this was really good imo.

The OP song gave me the impression of a Kyoto Animation show with its high quality production. There's a good degree of realism in regards to the character lives and setting. Beyond just the visuals, I like the diverse cast so far. That Nanao guy sure is popular lol

That archery club has quite a lot of members, much more than I had anticipated. I really hope they bring out the best from its most prominent members (like that Seiya guy for instance) This show also has surprisingly good music imo.

I'm guessing this is more of a characer drama driven story. Can't wait to learn more about the characters' past too especially Minato Narumiya.

Great start.

Good starting episode. We get a quick intro to the individuals that will make up the team early on. Not only that, it doesn't waste any time in getting the setup of reviving the kyudo/traditional Japanese archery club. Of course, the main character is not negelcted and we even get a number of hints as to why he is in the funk that he is in now. We also get a quick setup of how his family is like - busy father who occasionally needs to go travel, and a late mother (who probably died in an accident that the main character was also involved in).

The piece de resistence of the episode though is the ending scene where he spots an archer practicing. KyoAni set up the scene beautifully with a drawing of the bow in the moonlit night and a loosing of the arrow that hits the target. These type of scenes have become a KyoAni trademark calling card.

I kinda liked the premiere, especially the B-part and the final scene. But what the heck was that “Merha!” thing about?

NVM, someone on twitter posted the answer. It's short for "Merhaba" which is a greeting in Turkish.

That makes since Japanese folks - especially teens - love to shorter/stylize greetings from foreign tongues. One of the most popular morning greetings at schools is "Chiis", which is a contraction of "Ciao-su".

I don't watch much sports anime so I can only draw from what I've seen recently, which is Hanebado; but this looks like it will be handling the main character's sports related trauma a lot better. The target panic scene was hard to watch, that teacher really screwed him over even though he meant no harm.

I've noticed some complaints on other review sites about Tsurune being the same old thing Kyoani always does (dramatic slice of life story beautifully animated) and wish they would diversify into other themes like most anime studios instead of limiting their creativity to a single genre.

That said, I understand this is all part of Kyoani's business and branding strategy; by being an inhouse studio that mostly adapts its own IP light novels, they can freely dictate their artistic direction without being at the mercy of an external production committee; and they can focus on specializing in a specific and recognizable animation style of which they have a dedicate fanbase.

My question is, does anyone think overall that Kyoani's approach is a good or bad thing?
Thoughts?

I still find Onogi pretty unlikable. It's nice that he takes archery seriously, but does he have to be such a noisy, judgmental prick?

First of all, KyoAni always doing dramatic slice of life story is wrong so don't go with these reviews (insert Kyoukai no Kanata, Nichijou, Amaburi, Maid Dragon, Phantom World, FMP: TSR here). It is the same when those reviews obnoxiously brand KyoAni as nothing but "Moe".

Secondly, I think their strategy is more than alright. Because it's simply more than just that. Irrespective of the IP thing, KyoAni pour a lot of affection to what they do because they enjoy what they do. I cannot say the same for other studios. I see them showing the same amount of love to titles like Maid Dragon or the one in my signature, if not, sometimes even more (yeah, look at my signature again!) compared to the titles they own.

Well, since I am a branded KyoFag that's all you'll probably get from me.

As for this anime, I think I am finding it more and more enjoyable. I am not getting blown away and wasn't expecting anything of that sort to begin with but it's light-hearted simple anime like this one is what the industry is missing these days. Ah, how I miss anime like Kimi to Boku, Gin no Saji and the likes before the industry became infested with ecchi, harem, isekai, otomege, yaoi, yuri craps.

Notice I used the words 'infested' and 'craps' to emphasize on. Because that's where we are headed nowadays. I am not questioning the genre or the demography; rather I am questioning the quality of anime in general.

Interview with Tsurune's anime director from the October issue of Otomedia magazine.
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1...ABiQRwIQs/edit

Some interesting trivia:

- Tsurune's author practices Japanese archery herself and has indepth knowledge of it. As such the novel has indepth discussions of how archery works.

- The director prefers to focus on the boys' feelings and how it affects them as archers; he feels focusing too much on archery mechanics will make the series too textbook-like.

- The anime team visited high school archery clubs and top-rank archers to record their bowstring/tsurune sounds. This was to give each character their own unique tsurune/bowstring releases.

There was a Detective Conan case where a pro baseball player destroyed his junior's career by telling him there was something wrong with his form. (The junior overtrained trying to correct a non-existent flaw and injured himself.)

I wonder if that's how Masa developed his own target panic?

I was pretty much done with this after Episode 5, which I thought was a cliche bomb. But I’m wavering now, as that was quite a strong ep.

Aside from the beautiful animation, this is a strictly paint by numbers sports anime that has been done by this studio millions of times it seems like.

Personally I stopped watching these for the characters or plot, I watch because the writers and animators really go above and beyond for showing the technical aspect of each sport
