I've been using x264 since what, April 2005? It's now January 2008. I've been out of the fansubbing circle for at a best guess, 6 months (that would be haven't encoded since, watched any fansubs regularly or idled in channels related to). I can't believe that people still have issue with H.264, MP4 and MKV. I mean Jesus, have things changed so little in say the last year or two?

Get with it people, you're bogging down the fucking industry, not to mention fansubbing.

A long time ago in a certain thread (or two if you count the one before the crash), it would occasionally come up in conversation about decoding power, the fact that not everyone had a fast computer and whatever. The examples I gave at that time were pretty much giveaway prices, I'd hate to think how much those computers would cost now - Spoiler: Next to nothing.

So here's something I found out, not because of fansubs. My sister wants a laptop. Nothing great, because it's mainly for school. Just out of interest I was browsing the interbutt and I found my laptop for something like 350GBP, which nets you a Turion64 2x2GHz with 1GB RAM, 80GB HDD, DVDRW, WLAN and Bluetooth. More than adequate for fansubs, and quite respectable with HD-DVDs and H.264 stream rips. That same laptop cost me 800GPB in September 2006 which is just 15 months ago. It was interesting to see how much the price had fallen. But anyway, you could probably say a laptop of that spec is even overkill for fansubs, so if you could find a lower spec one, it would cost even less.

I knew the transition would be somewhat of a rough ride (pretty much because aside from it being a codec change that was very advanced at the time, but also the increasing usage of MP4 and MKV), but at this rate we will be on the next spec before people get on with H.264.

One thing about sticks in the mud though, they have given us some epic lulz in the past. Good times.

Maybe Menclave could then distribute their releases in 15 different formats. Fun times ahead of us!

French Toast, please!

And how about a large serving of CCCP brand beer?

As I said, my computer completely fails (2.3ghz Atholn), but I was able to play a 1080P adult film file (.wmv though...) fine the other day! I was very pleased...

It's simply amazing what an upper-end processor from 4 years ago can do really...

I would usually just mutter to myself "but macs suck!". I'll actually put forward an argument why nobody should specially cater for you though:
Fewer anime watchers own macs than have slow PCs. Since nobody listens to the latter, nobody will listen to the former without another reason either.

Well even though there is no "CCCP for Mac" (obvious, because Mac doesn't have DirectShow), there is MPlayer. Which will do everything the CCCP does, and more actually. Not to mention most of the parts in the CCCP come from MPlayer/FFMpeg code anyways.

/me would have expected checkers to make this obvious remark as well :P

Well the poster did mention mplayer but thinks there should be something easier to use,I can see where he's coming from.

I think the original poster got it spot on. Some groups are afraid to advance with the times. They have perfected their encodes the way they know best and don't want to basically start from scratch.
Then you get to the issue of soft-subs. Alot of groups are afraid to make their scripts so easily available in fear another group may steal their fonts, styles etc.

Thankfully more and more groups are adopting these new formats and hopefully these will leave the rest no option but to follow suite.

Easier to use then a player that plays everything? Perhaps you could enlighten the rest of us to help your cause...because seriously none of us have any idea where you are coming from.

I was just pointing out that exedore (to whom i assumed you were replying since you quoted him)had mentionned mplayer when he said "And unlike some people, I don't think people should have to go in and manually dig out mplayer's preferences in terminal to make subs work."
And I can see where he's coming from when he says that, mplayer was a bit intimidating to me at first (since i'm a noob) so i just stuck with xvid ,but I finaly made the jump recently and use mplayer.

You hit the j key......problem solved.
You can read about all of mplayer's options without the terminal just fine. You may have heard it before when someone told you to RTFM. It is really not that difficult, people just seem to be making it more complicated than required. And with the MPlayer builds by Andiyar and friends for Mac OS X as well as direct instructions by Mac users for idiot Mac users, there should be no confusion. I guess checkers did have the correct response all along.

Sorry, had a little (or not so little actually) brainfart and didn't notice that exedore mentionned having to use the terminal, which,as you've said, isn't true.
