50th anniversary of "anime" on TV: "50 Masterpieces for 50 Years of TV Anime"

Yesterday, 1st January 2013, was the 50th anniversary of the first televised anime series ever to surface in japanese television - the first adaptation of Osamu Tezuka's groundbreaking manga "Astro Boy", first seen in 1st January 1963

In order to celebrate the anniversary, the Asahi Shimbun website assembled a list of 50 (although there's more than that number) anime series that represent (according to Crunchyroll's translation of the original source's article) "the electric range and heights of anime over the years":

Spoiler for The list:
Sources: Asahi Shimbun (original source), Crunchyroll

Curious the fact that three of the "50 years of anime on TV" aren't represented at all:

1964 - the year of "Shounen Ninja Kaze no Fujimaru" and "Big X"
1994 - the year of "Magic Knight Rayearth" and "Blue Seed"
2012 - (???)

No Maison Ikkoku? For shame.

Air making it, but Clannad not, is pretty eyebrow-raising for me.

And I have to laugh at K-On! being the sole representative of 2009.

It's not a bad list, but there are some interesting omissions.

I am really surprised to see Zeta Gundam excluded from this list when 4 other Gundams are on there. I had thought it was pretty widely considered the best. I also very strongly disagree with Strike Witches being on there over Clannad After Story for 2008 but, I can't read the article explaining the list so maybe it's for sales reasons?

A very interesting list...

Happy that "Inazuma Eleven" is listed - sometimes I feel it's so underrated by many anime fans for a couple of reasons

Well, "Candy Candy" is in the list and hasn't yet got a proper DVD release in Japan - at least, not that I've heard of (because of the lawsuit between the two authors of the manga)... so, probably that ain't the reason (as it's about the world of anime on television)

Also, no "Hunter x Hunter" (1999 version) in the list

I feel like some people might be thinking this is a list of 50 greatest anime, its by no means saying that, its just a list to show how much anime has changed over the past 50 years. For that purpose, this list is awesome but I agree with one point, why Air over Clannad?

the list seems to use the word Masterpieces loosely.

I don't think the list uses the word Masterpieces at all

The list of series chosen is more questionable the later it goes. But that is understandable, we don't really know what the classics will be from last year, 5 years, even 10 years...we can only assume based on our own perceptions and opinions.

Although not including Maison Ikkoku & Gunbuster in the 80's anime seems like a glaring omission to me.

What? No Azumanga Daioh?

That title pretty much was the gateway show in terms of the "slice of life" high school shows that have been popular in the last decade (especially in terms of those titles that are based on 4-koma manga like K-On!).

Yea seriously, there's a few gundam series but no Zeta? :O

Also, Death note?

Ano Hana, Shana ,and True Tears are great shows but I dunno about them being masterpieces.

Also, K-on over Bakemono lulz.

List is somewhat accurate until 1999. About then this list goes off on a weird tangent.

K-ON became mainstream I guess.

As for 1964 and 1994... I guess they couldn't find any influentials.

I think this list is based on "influence" rather than "quality".

Even so, there are quite a few questionable choices, but it looks much better now...

I am very surprised with lack of Zeta as well. 00 should be replaced with Zeta at least, I am willingly to give Seed some credit as it brought newfound popularity to Gundam.

But I am very pleased with my all time favorite anime, GaoGaiGar, being mentioned .

*saw the list* -> *notice a title: Strike Witches*

On another note, I’m glad that Kiteretsu and Creamy Mami made it to the list even though I think it’s a questionable decision. And Nintama Rantarou! That’s show is funny as hell. It always became the topic of conversation among my friends during highschool ^^.

What is that list? Some are just ordinary anime that didn't even add anything to the development of anime.

...Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh? Air but no Clannad? Da faq am I reading?

There's nothing too surprising about this popularity list otherwise.
