she definitely wouldn't let a gang war kill her beloved O-Tae-chan! Anyway can't wait to see the next ep, Gintoki using real weapons! |

Actually there is an easy explanation for that. We're talking about "4 Devas of Kabuki District", the most powerful people in Kabuki. It's pretty certain they have connections with the government, otherwise they wouldn't be able to conduct their shady business. Also Kujaku Hime Kada is an Amanto so I wouldn't be surprised if she was untouchable by Shinsengumi (at least officially).
As for Shinsengumi not being in Gintama for a long time - not true. Not long ago was anpan episode. What annoys me is lack of Katsura (the funniest and my favourite character in Gintama). |

I thoroughly enjoyed the last episode. I don't think there has been so much tension before in a Gintama episode and so far this arc appears that it will be my favorite. Shinpachi is my least favorite character so hopefully he will redeem himself in my eyes. It would be interesting to see if the townspeople will help Gintama and his group (Otose's family) in this arc. They've got a lot of people to fight. Excited!!!

I watched episode 212 which has proper sound at last.
I was thinking that in this series, comedy plots are in demand mainly. So I couldn't get the reason why author tries to make this series so serious. But I read that Gintama gets the higher rank in popularity vote of Jump reader when it's in the serious story arc. Now, I understand that the serious part is inevitable to survive in Jump... Anyway, it's a good news that Otose's death was troll (in a sense) and next episode must be intense. Pirako's ranking of this week is #68. Because she was daddy’s little girl, after all. |

Me neither. I get why he isn't popular since he's too normal and bland compared to the rest of Gintama's crazy cast, but I see no reason to dislike him. His job as the serious man is very important, the comedy wouldn't work that well without him. Also, the glasses gag is hilarious.

Shinpachi has Yamazaki, another regular guy in a world of monsters. BTW, Shinpachi is one of my favourite characters in Gintama and I agree that without him it wouldn't be the same anime/manga (it would be worse). Also seiyuu dubbing Shinpachi is great and makes Shinpachi even better in anime than in manga.
Spoiler for my ranking of Gintama characters - first 10:

Disregarding the glasses joke. Yamazaki has been shown to be just as plain as Shinpachi. Two average joes ftw! Madao don't count. He's too epic. |
