Main characters usually do pretty well in polls because they often get more screen time for the audience to get attached to them. Not to mention that if the viewers hate the main character they'll often drop the series quickly. The only exceptions to this are harem series where it's extremely rare for the protagonist to be as popular as the love interests, slasher movies where the villain is almost always the most memorable character, or special cases where the protagonist gets a lot of hate or is considered bland while the supporting cast is loaded with ensemble dark horses.

I can relate to something like that. Dropped Naruto series because of well... Naruto and the main cast which got too irritating to watch. Natsu for now is one of the few shonen heroes I can easily digest, but even if I come to dislike him later there are still other great cast of main and supporting characters (one of the best I've seen in fact) that will keep me watching it.

I was thinking about adding him, but I realize a pet cannot run the show. I would be annoyed if there was a full two episodes about him, but I like his comments and his part of the series.

^ At least Happy is a capable mascot that manages to stay in the spotlight even at the most critical events...BLEACH had Kon but he was kicked out of the story way too early, and Naruto's toads have been cast into a bottomless pit of oblivion.

Lucy
She's damn cute, I like her development and all the comedic moments revolving around her. Her magic style is interesting as well. I think she'll become one of the strongest in the end.

Natsu
I like his personality (never giving up, valuing friends above all) and his fighting style/magic is cool and refreshing. I keep wondering about his mysterious past as well.

Juvia
I find her very cute and I like the jokes revolving around her. She's pretty strong as well. I've always loved water type magic.

Gajeel
He has a cool fighting style and he can be pretty GAR at times. He's getting a lot of development as well. Love his interactions with some characters (natsu and levy mostly)

It's a pity Laxus isn't getting that many votes. I consider him the most awesome "villain" of Fairy tail so far. Also I think he's the second most badass, with Gildartz being on the top of course.
Oh well, I guess he had only a little appearance besides his own arc...

Gray, because I really love his design, his necklace, his attitude, his background.

Erza is really cool too, great female hero, really strong.

Damn, I'm surprised Erza hasn't blown everyone else out of the water... the four main characters are all pretty close

and I have yet to vote, mostly because I've watched maybe two, three episodes of the anime, and am even behind on the manga by several chapters... though Natsu and Lucy would probably get mine (it has nothing to do with the fact that I'm also a LucyxNatsu shipper ...)

Juvia, Makarov, and Mirajane for me ... I just like characters who are mostly in the background but are strong. Probably would throw Gildartz in but wanted to limit it and for some reason I just dont like him as much as the others. Main characters are enjoyable but not my favorite mages.

Mirajane gets my vote... although she can't fight all the time, her demon-form is pretty fearsome and she's pretty powerful. She could probably lose her sanity if she stays in her demon form for too long like Elfman did.
