Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou - a must-see romance anime. no love triangle, but I guess jealous guy applies
Nana - I don't really like either of the protagonists, especially Nana (lol... "Hachi") but it's a very well made anime. love triangles apply cuz Hachi is a slut (my words, open to interpretation) and well, you'll see if you watch Paradise Kiss - sorta similar to Nana.. but not really. I liked it quite a bit until towards the end Lovely Complex - a very funny anime, i've watched 14 episodes or so... but for some reason stopped. don't really know why, I think I was anticipating some imminent crappiness and kinda got scared (a lot of things bother me that don't bother most people) |

Hey now most anime I've watched so far is good and enjoyable, so don't diss all anime. School Days has its value, I will admit, but it's not a romantic anime. There's romance, but I would hesitate to put romance as the primary genre.

Now, now, Don't lead the OP astray here, School Days is definitely not what he/she is looking for. It's not sweet, does not have a female protagonist and I find it hard to justify calling most of what goes on there romance.
The only thing thing that fits the bill is the love triangle, and even that's in a very distorted sense.

I'm going to suggest Iriya no Sora, UFO no Natsu, even though its a bit of a stretch to what your looking for, but I think you'll be touched anyway.
The story is told through the male perspective most of the time, but it centers around a girl that will throw the viewer into one emotional twister during the six episode OVA, from Toei Animation, based on the Seiun Award nominee light novels of the same name. |

Just my own comments and suggestions.
I see several recomendations for Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou. I would modify that by suggesting you just read the manga. The anime starts out really well, but about 2/3 of the way through several key creative people left the production, and it turned into one of the most horrible train-wrecks I have ever seen. Karin and Lovely Complex are both great romantic comedies in their way. Of the two, Lovely Complex does have some rivals intruding into the main relationship from time to time, but it does not really have a consistent triangle going. Also, although Karin does have a female protagonist, it is aimed at the shounen audience, so it does contain a mild amount of "fanservice", which may put off some female vieweres. If you are looking for some additional suggestions, you might want to check out Marmalade Boy and Peach Girl. In Marmalade Boy, the main character is involved in a triangle with the boy she had a crush on from junior high, and her brand new step-brother. In Peach Girl, the main character is involved in a triagle with the boy she had a crush on since junior high, and a "bad boy" with a heart of gold. These are both classic "shoujo" romances so they can be heavy on the melodrama at times. |

Girl protagonist with a love triangle of sorts? Hm...
Noein - my top anime of last year, by a mile. Coming from a Haruhi-tard no less... Nana- anime is too much like the manga that I haven't got far into it. But that's a good thing, since the manga rocks Saiunkoku- definitely fits your description. Check it out. Victorian Romance Emma - While Emma shares half her screentime to the other protagonist, it still a good story with romance and triangles. Oldies but goodies Escaflowne Hana Yori Dango (or check out its dorama version) If you're up for something different, I suggest Hataraki man. I think you'll be pleased.

Nodame Cantabile - it's a rom-com, but the male lead seems to have more air time than the female, although it's just as good.
I'll second Kare Kano (aka Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou aka His and Her Circumstances). And I agree the first 13 episodes are better because Hideaki Anno (of Evangelion fame) was still around then. Fruits Basket - the story might be about a cursed family (3 guys in particular) but its focus is on the female lead Honda Tohru and how she changes their lives. Full of saccharin goodness, this one is. |

I 2nd Strawberry Panic. It has a female lead and a love triangle. It's yuri btw so if you don't prefer same sex love thing, then I suggest ignoring it then. Anyway, you could also try watching Saiunkoku Monogatari too.
