Suzuka from Outlaw Star is the first one that comes to mind, as a true ronin type.

Touka from Utawarerumono may fit the bill, too. Not really a ronin, though...

Saya from Blood+ not really a samurai either, but very skilled with her sword.

Any of the Claymores may fit the bill, depending what it is you're looking for exactly.

If you just want a girl with a sword, Shana from Shakugan no Shana may be a choice.

They're all that I can think of off the top of my head, all being loner-ish women/girls with swords.

??? I'm confused if you're asking for a recommendation, or asking help identifying a show.

Carried by the Wind: Tsukikage Ran stars a skilled female ronin.

Balsa is Seirei no Moribito uses a spear, not a sword and she's very skilled. I wouldn't classify her as a ronin or samurai though. The anime is so good and she's awesome, so you might check it out.

Youko in Junni Kokki develops powerful sword skills after being inhabited by a spirit being.

I'm surprised no one's mentioned Claymore yet. Many of the women in that show, including the main character, use swords, though they're slaying demons, not other fighting humans. (Whoops, missed Ichihara Askao's post there; sorry!)

Balsa may not use a sword, but she's certainly effective with that spear.

aye, Robotnik's one is one of the finest... realistic swordplay, retelling of the old samurai Edo period tales.

The character has a strong lineage to the Motoko character in Love Hina (though with little of the emotional baggage).

I'm not really fond of supernatural swordplay generally (Claymore, etc) so Tsukikage Ran is good stuff in my estimation.

Fourth. If you want a cool, level-headed ronin-like (i.e. serves no one master) martial artist, it doesn't get much better than Balsa from Serei no Moribito (lit. Guardian of the Spirit).

The bonus is the fantasy setting.

No love for The Third?

Honoka fits the bill pretty darn well. Damn near godlike with a sword and works for anyone who will pay. =p
