Cool. The fluidity of the text is what I'm looking most forward to. I'm grateful to Baka-tsuki, but their translations do have those literal translation jolts. Ah, I'm looking forward to the release more than ever... April 2009 is too far away.

If Japanese wasn't the most insufferable language ever to learn, I would have already have had enough incentive to learn it and then buy the Japanese novels. Unfortunately all I get to do now is pout and cry. Sigh, I hope the anime comes faster than the damn English novel translations. But just to clear up any possible misconceptions, we'll have just the "first" novel translated by April 2009" correct? This is a horribly long time to wait.

Uhuh, sure, that's why with 3 months of hard study I am speaking very very basic Japanese. lol

Stop pouting, and learn the language. Its not actually that hard after your comfortable with it.

True, that . I have about four months of rather lax study, and I'm understanding drama CDs and trying to translate manga.

All it takes is a decent book or two and the willingness to try.

The three I use (I picked up a new one since last time) are:

1. Super Review Japanese Grammar, William McGovern, from REA;
2. Learning Hiragana and Katakana (workbook), Tetsuo Takaguchi and Kenneth G. Henshall, from Tuttle Language Library;
3. A Guide to Remembering Japanese Characters, Kenneth G. Henshall, from Tuttle Language Library.

For getting into the language, acquiring basic reading skills, and improving reading skills, respectively.

Also good for somebody who doesn't have a teacher is the "Japanese for Busy People" series--I recommend using the Kana version.

So with the news of Haruhi season two being released in the next Newtype magazine, think we'll learn anything about novel 10? And it's not licensed yet so we might be able to have a translation for the time before it does get licensed no?

It is licensed, but not out yet. The first volume should be out in 1 year.

Volumes 1-9 are what's licensed, so volume 10 would be fair game (until it is licensed).

I've read the novels until volume 8. Are the events more interesting in volume 9?
is it really true that the novels will be licensed? gaah! i don't have that musch time to read vol 9 cause of work.

Yes, the novels will be licensed. However, they are being licensed by a company that appears to know what they're doing, so...

Spoiler for Vol.9:

The Sneering Bastard and the Girl in Red from Vol.7 return, under the names "Fujiwara" and "Kyoko Tachibana", respectively.

They are joined by a representative of the entity that caused Snow Mountain Syndrome, Kuyoh Suoh, and an old school friend of Kyon's, a girl named Sasaki.

This girl, according to Kyoko, has the potential to gain powers similar to that of Haruhi, but only if they take the powers from Haruhi herself.

To make things even more difficult for Kyon, Sasaki introduces herself to Haruhi as a "close friend", instantly making Haruhi jealous.

In addition, Kyon recieves a phone call one night, and suddenly, unbeknownst to him, the universe divides in two.

In one universe, he receives a call from a mysterious, unknown, yet familiar-sounding girl, telling him she'll meet him soon.

In the other, he recieves a call from Sasaki, asking him to meet with her.

These universes are labelled as "alpha" and "beta", respectively.

In the alphaverse, Kyon lays around all Sunday and returns to school on Monday, where Haruhi, taking it upon herself to be his personal tutor, forces him to study for their upcoming math test. Upon arriving late for the SOS Brigade, they find 11 hopefuls waiting for them, new recruits for the SOS Brigade. (Haruhi ends up throwing out one of them almost immediately.) Another girl, however, shows up, one that the fans suspect may be the girl who called Kyon that night. Due to this, and other reasons, the fans also suspect that she is a Slider. This half of the novel ends with Kyon wondering what's going to happen to the recruits next. (I suspect that only the Slider will actually make it in.)


In the betaverse, Kyon finds out on the Sunday about Sasaki's possible God-powers, and the fact that she has her own closed space.

No recruits show up on the Monday, though Kyon does have a dream/flashback in the middle of English class where he recalls an interesting conversation with Saskai, back in middle school. Sasaki, there, echoes one of Haruhi's lines from the first volume: "Love is like a disease." (Or something like that.) After school, the Brigade gathers, only to find that Nagato is missing. Haruhi calls and find that Nagato has fallen ill, and the rest of the Brigade rushes to her side...

One of the reasons we have been awaiting the tenth volume is because of the damned cliffhanger ending of this one...
