Pretty good episode. Wasn't sure whether I am going to follow this show just from first episode but this one sealed the deal.

Btw, I can't believe Maizono died. From the promo images I was sure she would play a big part in the story so her death came as a big surprise.

And Naegi lost two harem members in just one episode

Trivia: Sayaka and Junko were heavily advertised as well when the game was about to be released, so people were expecting them to be main heroines. You can imagine people expectations were completely betrayed.

Since we got weekly episode threads, I'll take the opportunity to post once again the list of the clues Makoto could found, including those that the anime had skipped. These are spoiler friendly.

Clues related to Sayaka and Junko's deaths

I don't think people need those missing clues from the game to solve this mystery. Difficulty is higher in the anime but there were enough visual cues to infer some of that information.

Also, I believe that a lot of that information will come up in the upcoming trial. That decision is good for adaptation purposes. They'll be saving plenty of time.

I'm not so sure about that.
I stated it in the old game thread and I still stick to my opinion that someone who played the game carmoflaged themselves as anime-only viewer.
Its really not hard to solve the overall mystery, but the chances of someone understanding the all clues while not getting a certain other clue before that are pretty low.

Might be just me being oversuspicious after having played a mystery game again though

actually its possible after mod give a complete clues, and iirc only 1 person in this forum guess correctly who and how to do (even its not perfect)
complete guess how to do is impossible, the evidence? Just look at other forum without someone giving complete clue, their prediction completely gone astray

I never said its impossible, just that it is very unlikely.
For that i'd have to explain evidence though which would result in not just a spoiler but everyone getting it so I will refrain from it

I like ep 1 better, but this is still a frontrunner for my favorite show of the season.

As an anime-firster I'm not going to make too much fun of the "mystery" because I assume that the first case is meant to be training mode for the game, and that the rest of the murders will be a little less "HEY, X IS THE CULPRIT" with the clues. Admittedly, the exact mechanics of "how" elude me, so I guess I'm not all that clever.

What actually made my heart sink about the whole episode was the same thing that caused me to drop Deadman Wonderland early on: Just the comically over-the-top way things have to be stacked impossibly against the main character, to the point where everyone and everything seemingly conspires against him. It portrays the antagonistic force as arbitrary in cartoonish malice, clairvoyant in foresight, and infinite in resources. To use pro-wrestling jargon: If the heel never shows his ass, I don't buy that there's a way to overcome him that is satisfactorily consistent with the narrative. Meaning that either the situation is hopeless, or the solution will be some random BS.

I'm going to stick with it because it's too early to assume so much. There's plenty of time for Monokuma to get more nuanced as a character, and I hope his deal turns out to be something nice and twisted. I'm digging the premise, and I really think I would have enjoyed playing the game. The cast is delightfully colorful, and I like the voice acting a lot so far. I almost can't wait for the future "trials" when there are fewer participants who all have established relationships. I suspect there will be more than a few hair-tearing cliffhangers.

Also, DAT OP.

The game had pink blood so since this series is adapted from the game itself, it's expected to be used. Maybe in the BD's it'll turn red, but overall what's been used once will likely be used again in another form of medium.

with two death?!! seriously?? that's too fast for someone who's not ready like me
I still haven't recovered for seeing Maizono death, and now Junko too
well, baka-Junko... you just died in silly way

Maizono's death is necessary to rise Naegi's role in this anime. Naegi is getting too attached to her...

where's episode 3??? I'm dying to see it

I'm not sure what you mean here. The rules of Monobear's game are pretty clear. Monobear emphasized how big a stickler he is when it comes to following the rules. He's clearly not a nice guy, but there's no particular reason to think he's lying.

Going by the rules, one of only two scenarios can possibly play out...

1) A killer gets away with it. Everybody else is executed. The killer graduates, effectively "beating" the game, and presumably being allowed to leave the school.

2) There are a succession of killers, each one being successfully convicted (and executed). So for each such killer, you'd have two deaths - the person killed by the killer, and the killer himself/herself. So the cast gets whittled down 2-by-2-by-2 over time. Once you're down to 4 (from 14 - 15 minus Junko), somebody kills someone, leaving 3. 2 of the 3 will have to assign blame to a 3rd (otherwise, its essentially a hung jury with no clear majority). If they're right, the 3rd gets executed. The 2 graduate together, or maybe Monobear sets up some sort of death-game between the two meaning that just one graduates.

Monobear may never be defeated, in the sense of this school being shut down and Monobear being either killed or dragged away in handcuffs. But that doesn't mean that the lead character can't "win", and overcome the situation he's in.

I could be wrong, but I think some people are overthinking this show. It's like the Saw movies. Or a much more lethal version of Big Brother/Survivor.

Shocking that Maizono died so early but really her death flag went up the minute Naegi said he's protect he no matter what. (ok well everyone has a death flag in this but you get my point)

Heh, so they pulled a "Scream" on everyone. Good thinking.

To add, in the demo of the game, the first victim was someone entirely different.

The trailers for the series also showed a different first victim.

I thought she'd be the first murderer... She may still be. It could be a suicide disguised as a murder.

I did think of that but there are a lot of visual keys. Of course those could be playing against us. The big thing is only she, psycho bear and Naegi knew about the door issue. If she was in there to escape the would be killer they wouldnt have been able to open the door.

Also something I noticed but will tag since not everyone watches the ED sequence
Spoiler for ED sequence:

The trial is a quasi jury system: the students will debate who is the actual culprit among them, by discussing about alibi, murder weapon etc.
It isn't really a regular trial where the primary suspect is stuck at the defendant box. Everyone takes part of the trial. That's why Monokuma stated "you will determine who is the culprit".
