A lot of the most experienced and influential people in the industry have said they think it's in huge trouble. But yeah, what would they know?

Biggest problem with anime (Japanese animation) is that it focuses too much domestically and even then it's largely looking only at a narrow portion of the population (otakus). I don't see the same thing with Western Animation like Pixar, Disney and even the Adult swim/Cartoon Network regardless of whether one personally thinks it's good or not.

Even in Japan, Disney/Pixar is more popular than their own comparative creations. Someone bring out the figure for Frozen because iirc it shattered every Japanese box office record in terms of animated works.

Anyways back on topic. Hosoda is the best bet Japan has trying to promote Japanese animation to the international market and for good reason... he's the only that has both a universal approach backed up by quality. It's also 2D in a age of 3D and I have a soft spot for 2D animation...

Voice cast anounced

Highlights include: female cast from wolf children is back (Hana, young and older Yuki), mainly live action actors but there's 2 notable exceptions: Miyano Mamoru and Yamaguchi Kappei, so both Light and L will be in this film

Another person people might be familiar with is Morohoshi Sumire: Hinami in Tokyo Ghoul.

Kind of disappointed Mamoru didn't go for authentic age and gender choices for the casting choices this time.

My guess is that he's going for a sort of classic action shounen piece instead of a naturalistic intimate one so he's using a cast to match that feel.
But thanks,if ever I get the chance to attend a q&a again I'll be sure to ask

Meh... There's a real loss of authenticity when women play boys in anime. You can even tell in the trailer. It's not so much a problem in TV series, but for a big theatrical like this is just takes you out of the moment.

No premiere in France this time, but we did get a 5 minute PV, looks like Hosada is going to hit us in the feels again...

Also I noticed Chizu's logo , I guess Makoto is now Hosoda's totoro?
Though I find it interesting that GWLTT and Summer works are listed as Chizu works, I know they're Hosoda movies but he did them at Madhouse.
It's not like trigger lists TTGL and P&SwG as trigger works instead of gainax.

Movie is out in subbed. Well, I heard mixed thoughts on the film though but I still like the director for most of his works so...

Also, apparently I heard he's doing another film soon (already worked on it recently).

Dude still has the usual pacing issues in the third act. It's never a good sign when your work has multiple montage sequences. coughGrimgarcough The plot itself is fine and there aren't any parts that are unnecessary. But there are parts that needed to be expanded and explored further.

Finished the movie just now.

I kinda enjoyed this but found the relationship between Ren/Kyuuta and Kumatetsu better than him and Kaede. Mostly because I think this movie should of been solely about the boy and the beast. His transition from a kid on the street to a grown up guy is something that I find pretty interesting to watch.

On the other hand, I find the battle between him and Ichirouhiko to be a rather mixed bag, felt like his purpose to kill Kumatetsu rather lacking. Also, the little creature on Ren felt more like a distraction (although it did play a somewhat important role when Kyuuta almost lost total control)

Nothing extraordinary for the movie. In terms of relationship dynamics, I thought it had its ups and downs. Music is decent and I thought the action was good. On storytelling, I think the film had a great start and fell a bit in the second half mostly because I wasn't sold on Ichirouhiko's character. On the other hand, introducing Kaede was kind of interesting as it gave Kyuuta a new experience since he came back. Still was an interesting watch overall for me.
