To me "similar to Gurren Lagann and Kill la Kill" is an oxymoron, since those two shows are utterly on different levels. But we'll see.

Is there no one telling Nakashima and Imaishi to use action sequences as secondary to a good story rather than just going apeshit?

I liked Kill la Kill but was disappointed by Gurren Lagann (very overrated series IMO)...

I'll keep an eye on this series to see which of the two it resembles more.

using aliens does not offend anyone, it's a safer bet than turning some real country into an enemy.

well, they can also use underground monsters, or unsuccessful experiences though.
