Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai

A movie based on the novel known as 'Kimi no Suizou wo Tabetai' is getting an anime film.

Plot Summary
One day, I–a high schooler–found a paperback in the hospital. The "Disease Coexistence Journal" was its title. It was a diary that my classmate, Sakura Yamauchi, had written in secret. Inside, it was written that due to her pancreatic disease, her days were numbered. And thus, I coincidentally went from Just-a-Classmate to a Secret-Knowing-Classmate. It was as if I were being drawn to her, who was my polar opposite. However, the world presented the girl that was already suffering from an illness with an equally cruel reality... (Source: MU)

The Live Action adaptation is doing fairly well at the box office, landing on the fourth position after opening at number three, but despite the visuals I'll probably wait until these adaptations are available for the smaller screen.

Lol, The title translates to "I want to eat your pancreas". Just screams romantic doesn't it?

I really don't get these stories that put you in the shoes of someone who knows / interacts with someone who's dying. It's such a half-hearted premise. I would much prefer to be in the shoes of the person who's actually suffering the decease. It would be harder to pull of, narrative-wise, but that just makes it more interesting to me. Besides, The pov being a third party just feels too voyeuristic for my taste.

Watched the movie today. From my point of view a beautifully crafted movie.

To be quite honest, it's more about the interaction and mutual effect of two people who are polar opposites than a movie about someone dying. The disease is more a catalyst to bring together these two and have them make various experiences than the actual main theme of the movie. This is highlighted in the big reveal towards the end:

Spoiler for Spoiler, do not open if you intend to watch the movie:

The development of their relationship (and in large part that of Shiga) is really well done. Both are keenly aware of their differences and through their interaction both come to admire each others strengths. This is highlighted as a closing circle in what both write independently towards the end and also by the revelation of Shiga's first name:

Spoiler for Spoiler:

Yamauchi also has a pretty strong answer to Shiga's question about what it means to her to be alive. An answer that has been inspired by Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince I think.
