The only thing I know for certain about this girl is that she has the power to see spirits which, I assume, extends beyond the youkai who appear before all the other major characters in the story. My guess is that these spirits are usually invisible to others, or don't like to show themselves, but I really can't say that for sure.

I also know that she often goes to this tutelary shrine where she meets with this unseen spirit who may or may not be

Sakunoshin, the Sakutaro expy. By the way, Marie's reaction to first seeing him was priceless. If they ever reach that event in the manga, or if they adapt it into an anime (seems like a long shot at this point, but not out of the question), I'd love to see her face for it.

However, I'm also not sure if the unseen character really is the character marked under "SUPER SPOILER," because the invisible character uses the pronoun "watashi" while Mr. "SUPER SPOILER" says "boku."

Also, I noticed that all the characters who have sprites and portraits either interact with, or are, youkai.

I've taken the liberty of typing up the Higanbana character profiles shown in the game, as they appear in Japanese. I'd like someone to translate

Anyway, I'm still in the middle of transcribing the profiles, so here's the first batch of characters. Also, note that there may be heavy spoilers.

Spoiler for Moriya Marie (森谷毬枝):

学校妖怪序列第８位。めそめそさん。
旧校舎のトイレに住むと噂される妖怪。
扉越しに話し掛けられても、決して返事をしてはいけない。

妖怪になって少し吹っ切れた様子。生前より少したくましくなった。
狩りをほとんどない代わりに、時折、どこかのクラスの給食時間に泯じっている。

お茶菓子をどこからともなく見つけてくるという、謎スキル持ち。

学校妖怪序列第３位。踊る彼岸花。
保健室の棚の上に座る人形が深夜に踊り出すという。
彼女に祟られると怪我をして、保健室の住人にされてしまう。

残忍だと自称し、妖怪たちにも恐れられている。
だが毬枝は、天邪鬼な性格だと見抜いて、上手に扱っている様子。

普段は保健室のテレビで深夜アニメを見ながら、お饅頭を食べるのが日課。

生前の毬枝のクラス担任。女子に人気のある溌溂とした教師だった。
しかし胸の奥に野獣を飼っており、毬枝をそのはけ口にしていた。

こんな悪党がろくな死に方をするわけもない。
最終にはめそめそさんとなった毬枝に全身を砕かれて消えた。

そのくせ、毬枝以外には最終まで善良な教師だった点が小憎らしい。

その年齢無視な服装は、もはや七不思議に数えられるべきレベル。
出会いがない、いい男がいないが口癖。生徒にまで愚痴っている。

ささやかな霊感があり、彼岸花の気配にも時折、気付いているらしい。
彼岸花の依り代である人形のお手入れもしてくれる、実質的保護者。

霊障と無縁なタイプらしく、彼岸花の霊気の中でもケロリとしている。

とある濡れ衣で、写真で真実を暴くことに取り憑かれた少年。
沼田陽子を付け回し、隠し撮り写真を送りつける嫌がらせを繰り返した。

しかしながら、被写体に気付かれすに撮影する技術は確かに天才的。
天職は恐らく、浮気調査の探偵かパパラッチだろう。

野鳥の写真が好きらしく、将来の夢は野鳥専門のフリーカメラマン。

学校妖怪序列第１位。校長先生。
校長室に並ぶ歴代校長の写真が抜け出し、校内を徘徊するという。
出会った生徒を神隠しにし、存在していた事実まで消してしまうという。

落ち着いた貫禄を見せるが、畏怖を持たない者には非常に残忍。
今では老いているが、かつては学校ごと飲み込む程の大妖怪だった。

怖い奥さんがいるらしく、その為、家に帰らす学校で過ごしているらしい。

周りからの執拗な冷やかしもあり、ストーカー写真のショックから自殺。
自殺を唆した妖怪がいたと見られ、彼女の自壊は加速度的だった。

自殺者の霊は妖怪たちの大好物のため、死後も彼女に安息はない。
妖怪たちの慰み者にされ、極寒の地獄の底を永遠に彷徨っている。

Just read this weekend
It was not as orgasmic as the naku koro ni series but definitely a good read
The stories I liked the most were (3)お姫様の嘘 and (7)ユートピア, even though I have a slight feeling that I've read something similar to (3) somewhere before.

The positive aspect is that since there's no mystery to solve here, you can just read it without worrying too much about missing a crucial detail

The manga version didn't appeal too much to me, but the VN version made it look a bit better to me, and at least for the firt two stories, I kind of felt the VN was a bit faster than the manga to develop things

Quick summary

-Starts with Higanbana trying to instigate a girl to suicide, and Marie trying to prevent it.
- Marie fails, Higanbana eats her soul
- Higanbana says she will go for her next prey (weak kids that don't like to live)
- We are introduced to Sakaki Yukari, a bullied kid. She suffers a lot
- Her strategy agains bully: ignore, to not them make fun of her
- Yukari goes to the bathroom, and starts to wonder if suicide wouldn't be a solution for her. Marie convinces her to not think like that (I guess Higanbana was tempting her before Marie comes, too)
- Marie tells her to discuss things with others
- Yukari tells her story
- She tried to seek help from her parents and teachers, but they recommended her to ignore the bullies (she felt ignored by her parents/teachers)
- Her mother died -> family in a mess -> using not very clean clothes
- Become the bullied kid because of that
- Recover from her mother death, but realized she was the bullied of the class
- Marie decides to help -> will haunt the leader of the bullies as mesomeso-san
- It seems the group that bullies Yukari was involved with the suicide girl of the beginning (1 year ago)
- She scares the hell out of him, and he promises to not bully yukari anymore
- In the end, it doesn't work. The leader keeps his promises, but the others keep bullying her
- One day, Yukari doesn't go to school -> kids act as drug addicts without drugs, very irritated and violent
- Marie decides to investigate
- New kid arrives, Oosumi Reiko. Yukari becomes her friend and she becomes the bullied of the class in Yukari's place
- The bullying on Reiko is much worse than on Yukari because she reacts smiling (Tehehe) (even the teachers bully Reiko)
- One day Yukari snaps and protects Reiko
- On the way back home, Yukari tells Reiko they should fight together against the bullying -> they cry together
- Because of a mirror on the street, Yukari finds Reiko is a Youkai (number 7, Sumire)
- Marie appears and tells the result of her investigation: the girl of the beginning was number 7 too
- Sumire's modus operandi: make all people of one class into bullying addicts so that in the next year, when they spread into different classes, there will be bullying everywhere and she can eat the bullied kid's souls
- Marie tries to defend Yukari from her
- Sumire threatens her: if you kill me, yukari will be back to the role of bullied kid, instead of Reiko
- Marie insists on defending Yukari, but doesn't attack. Sumire beats her until Marie's youkai power fades, and Marie disappears
- Sumire proposes Yukari join the bullies and start bullying Reiko. She refuses
- Reiko will disappears the next day, Yukari is the bullied kid again
- The bullies are much worse now. They try to take her clothes off, because she stinks (even her underwear)
- She runs, falls from the stairs, cuts her head, blood, passes out -> infirmary (Higanbana responsible for all of this)
- Absent for a few days
- In one of these days, the kids are in a bus in a school trip (yukari not there)
- They are irritated because Yukar is not coming to school (Really, fuck off them all, they caused her absence)
- Even the leader that Marie scared, is joining the other kids in their plans to bully Yukari when she is back
- Higanbana causes the bus to fall from a cliff
- Everybody dies, except for the driver
- Sumire very pissed Higanbana ate her kids
- But she doesn't have the guts to fight Higanbana
- Yukari moves to a new class, people don't know her there, and give a warm welcome because of the 'tragedy' with her class
- Marie appears, Yukar thanks her for everything she did for her
- Marie goes away
- Yukari sees a boy being bullied and decides to stand up to protect him

As for Mister Black Tea, they say he has no rank among the school youkais, however he has power and would be 2nd place in the ranking of the shadows. He's also the right arm of the The Principal, (the old man youkai from chapter 2), and thus he is called Vice-Principal, as well.

Basically, if you ranked the youkai in the school according to how powerful they actually are instead of their official position, then this youkai would be #2. The meaning is like "shadow government", if you're familiar with that term.

Say, they don't ever reveal the actual name of the school, or what kind of school it is, do they (like an elementary, middle, or high school)? I don't even think they reveal when the story takes place, if it's not some generic "modern" setting.

Began my slow but sure reading with a limited knowledge of Japanese and shoddy translations yesterday. Filling in the blanks hasn't been that bad for me yet, and I must say that this book has given me mixed feelings so far.

From what I've read so far, I can't say it's bad. At all. In fact, I'm probably going to think it's a great read and be excited for the next comiket to come so I can get my hands on the second one...

My problem, though, personally is that I can't really say I love it as much as I loved the first book of Umineko (as of yet, as bear in mind I've only read about a half an hour's worth of this story while reading at a snail's pace with translations.)

Yes, this is probably going to be a great book and I'll absolutely love it by the time I finish it, I'm sure. However, the departure from the last few years of mystery that was Umineko is a bit saddening for me, as I was entirely absorbed by Umineko from episode 1. I thought it was a straight out fantastic mystery for a very long time. I still think that it did fantastically as a mystery until... Well, episode 8 when it was clear that Ryukishi's strong point was NOT detective fiction.

It's just saddening that Higanbana isn't going to absorb me as a mental challenge like Umineko did. Even though this is also a relief considering I'm not going to feel like I need to analyze every single line of text as I read it.

Now... Comparing this to Higurashi? I'm pretty sure I'll like it just about as much, if not more considering I'm not a diehard fan of Higurashi.

Anyway, I hope I can discuss this game with some of the other people who have read it once I finish.
