That's what I remember too. All I remember was that Rika punched her and she... balanced the chair over her? But didn't hit her or anything.

...Although... I did enjoy watching Rika beat her over and over with a chair. XD;

I haven't played the original games, so I wouldn't quite know too much bout that ^^'. But the scene where Rika beats Satoko came rather suddenly for me and I jumped... just a bit, though. ^^' Although Satoko did deserve it. She WAS being a complete brat, after all. -_-

No, she grabbed Satoko's hand, tucking her nail into one of her finger joints in the process, punched her hard right below the eye, grabbed her hair and used it to pull her to the floor and then picked up a chair and hit her with it 2 to 3 times.

Well it's another good episode...well paced and had the story ended at a good point to build for the climax. It's unfortunate the way that some scenes and elements were cut, but considering that they have got to the "club establishment part" this early, maybe they are just rearranging some elements...

Spoiler for scenes that are cut out, probably not that important anyway:

1. Rika's indecisive stance during the curry scene...which builds up some more later...

2. Rika's dad finding Rika in the chamber...which results in a sleepless night

3. Bernkastel. Maybe it's the thing with young children drinking grape juice that can't be aired...but in a way, higurashi anime doesn't need Bernkastel. After all, who is Bernkastel? That person has never appeared once before in the anime. Just like how there's no "dice" to kill in "saikoroshi-hen" since there weren't any mention of a dice to begin with.

P.S. I remember the first time playing the game, I thought to myself, "Man, Teppei sure did a good job with the Houjou kids in the regular worlds. " I'm surprised I wasn't the only one who joked about that as many comments on nicovideo also reflected that sentiment during the scene with Satoko taking Rika's book.

Ah. I re-read the chair scene, and I have no idea where I got the word "balanced" from. Ahaha-- but it looks like it was two times she did it. Not that it really matters. I liked that scene.

Haven't looked back at Rei yet except for the chair part... but shortly before Rika realized her mother had the Piece, didn't she start to cry after she discovered Yamamoto told her parents about her story? Instead of staring wide-eyed in shock at her mom like the anime did. ...I wanted to see that animated. XD;

Well, if you look at it that way, then I guess Bernkastel would only confuse the more "casual watchers" of the show.

I thought it would have been nice to at least mention Bern. During a scene with Reina, Satoshi, and Mion, I thought "Rika" said something about the "other Rika". I was a little confused, thinking I missed something involving Bernkastel, only to find out she wasn't mentioned at all.

Spoiler for I guess other than that, the only part that I think bugged me was....:

Didn't Rika hug her mother before and at the time, she wasn't the piece? I realize not everything can be included, but it was more heartbreaking when she was telling her daughter about the 8th generation thing and then Rika realized that she had to kill her own mother. Quickly skimmed through, didn't realize Rika massaging her mother was the scene. OTL

I was hoping the talk with Hanyuu would have been more teary eyed and emotional, but I can't complain too much when I get to hear my srs bsns Yukarin.

Maybe I just took Saikoroshi-hen the wrong way? You-know-who and bonding with her mother was what made the arc so enjoyable for me. Hanyuu, for future reasons, is an added bonus. Everything else was just icing on the cake, especially Reina.

Though she did appear in Kai EP24 at the end with little Miyoko. (Which has people calling her Older!Rika)

Though yeah it would have been nice to have a mention of Bern.

Just something I just thought of... If Saikoroshi-hen had been a part of the "original arcs" (That is the four questions arcs and 4 answer arcs) then it might have been the answer/question arc for Katautsushi-hen... Although Katautsushi-hen is only doujin, the part where a child has to kill her mother is still the same. So that way, Hanyu and Rika kinda have the same fate in those arcs.

There's no excuse really for removing Bern. Adding her in would've been as easy as adding in Hanyuu's time stopping ability.

Remember also that Rei isn't even "airing", it's an OVA.

I don't think "casual watchers" is in an OVA's target market...

I'm sure they'll make some mention of her, considering the same studio doing Rei is also doing the Umineko anime, which Bern should be appearing in a few times. Bernkastel has most reference near the end of the Saikoroshi arc rather than the middle, so it should be find.

By "casual watcher", I meant the people who mostly just watch the anime and take it for what it is, not looking at anything else that isn't animated. Like the silly people who think Satoko must be an idiot when the anime never explained she was colourblind.

Most of the people I know that watched the OVA didn't know about Hanyuu's ability, yet didn't question it at all. I think one of them has played the Higurashi Daybreak game and thought it was from that.

I only talk to two other people who know of Hanyuu's ability. :/

I did know a guy who saw ep 1 of the OVA first for some reason without watching anything else before. Quickly watched both seasons, even with exams going on shortly after.

This episode already covered the remaining bit of chapter 1, then hastily covered 2 through 4 - the end of chapter 4 is when Rika finds out her mother is the Piece. I think the only time Bernkastel is mentioned in the last chapter is during that talk with Hanyuu and even then, it would most likely only confuse people if it came out of nearly nowhere. It went something like:

Rika : Hanyuu's right. I'm not the witch Bernkastel anymore. I'm Furude Rika. (ry

Looking at it like that, I can only think that if they introduce Bern at the end, then it wouldn't be as effective. "Rika" questioning who/what she really is was a moving scene for me.... And I wanted to swat the alcohol away from her loli hands.

I can see why they wouldn't fully introduce Bern, yet I'm still leaning toward she should have at least been introduced. More mind fcuks are fun, right?

Studio DEEN doing both shows doesn't mean they'll just add her just because she has a part in Umineko. They should have added her for what she is in Higurashi.

Saikoroshi-hen looks like it's focusing more on the "if" world and less on the mother-daughter relationship of Rika and Fredrica Bernkastel. When I think of it this way, then they're doing a decent job.

I guess that's one of the problems with looking at the original before the anime adaption, especially with how Saikoroshi-hen was very, er, monologue-y?

Adding Bern isn't necessary. As we can see, Bern was never mentioned in the anime. In the game, her name appears everytime in the beginning poem, and her name is mentioned in minagoroshi-hen. Thus having her name in the game, in saikoroshi-hen, makes more sense than having it in the anime.

As for pulling the DEEN connection, with Umineko...I think Kawase is playing it safe. Umineko is back in Kon Chiaki's hands, so how knows what kind of treatment it would get? Maybe they will cut out Bern in that also?

While I agree with you, and think that the most they would do is what you have said...I'm just saying that anything could happen.
