Quite personally, I rather enjoy this universe; it's super laid back so far, and there's no immiment threat that someone's going to wipe it because Kyon and Yuki appear a little too friendly with one another.

This was a fun episode. Yes, the artwork and designs will take some getting used to.
The thing I'm wondering the most is why has Nagato's personality change so drastically? This series is supposed to be in the same universe but alternate timeline, right? Or does this series have nothing to do with the original besides similar characters?

We're in alternative universe fundamentally and in a way this is a sequel to the movie, so I would watch the movie first. It explains Nagato's personality shift really well and is awesome movie to boot, but hey if you want the big revel spoiled...

In my opinion this series shouldn't be seen as a direct continuation of the film... we should think of this as a spin-off that took inspiration from that, but it shouldn't be put in relation with the universe of the classic series of Haruhi excessively.
If one think too much at the classic series, I think he/she risk likely to be disappointed. I never read the manga but I really liked the episode, I laughed at various points, Yuki is too cute ! I look forward to see the next episodes ! |

The closest thing this series would be attached to is the movie based alternate universe version of the Haruhi-chan series of shorts that were animated early in 2009. Which almost makes sense since the author of this series is the same as the Haruhi-chan 4koma.

Of all the characters, Nagato took the longest time for me to get used to. She sure doesn't sound like the Nagato I know. She is definitely more active and talkative than the overly shy Nagato of the movie. And she's got some weird obsessions
Kyon is still Kyon but less snarky. I'm glad he still sounds the same but his eyes are drawn so differently he felt so unfamiliar! I really liked his dialogue during the washing machine scene, that really felt like the same old Kyon from the original! This episode was quite a fun ride, and it really reminded me of the Haruhi-chan series more than Disappearance (which makes sense, really). I like how Asakura and Tsuruya act like the big sisters to Nagato and Asahina respectively, and its nice to know those two will be given more time in the spotlight as well (though I'd still pick Asakura's original character over this, given the chance She was bad-ass in the original). The feel of the series is really so much different from the original. It's definitely a romantic comedy, where the original had more of an adventurous tone to it. Though I don't watch romance anime I'm really interested to watch this thru just because I've missed the characters so much P.S. I hope Haruhi pops out soon! |

Spoiler for On Haruhi:
As for Yuki's voice, I think she sounds younger; her voice has a character to it that's a little difficult to describe. I'm tempted to say that Yuki's voice has some degree of similarity with Chino of GochiUsa and Renge of Non Non Biyori.

oh, i see
well, for me, this story is "how the world would be if kyon haven't activated the restore program". the time limit expired and the memories he had being altered. so, yes, it is the world nagato created at that time. i see it this way.

I guess I'd better watch the Disappearance of Suzumiya Haruhi, which I never have, much as I loved the original series. As it is, this episode was a pleasant enough trifle, but in a lower cosmos than the original Haruhi series.
I'm not the best person to judge Chihara Minori here, since I don't even like her singing (technically excellent though it is), but I thought she was pretty awful. From my point of view, she should stick to expressionless characters. I was less disturbed by the drawing/animation than I expected to be. Looked good to me, even though nowhere near the detail and motion of the KyoAni original. Looking forward to ep 2.

The Kyon I watched in this episode did not show any remorse.
So I think it is unrelated to the movie. See the Kyon interaction with Ryoko in this episode? They were rather too closer than the original series. I could not believe they were this close friends when I saw them in this side series. Really I wanted to see this side of Yuki instead of the emotionless one. But then that would mean it is not really the character Yuki I'm seeing, this kind of Yuki is rather a whole different character. Seeing the movie really made me think this side series more convincing. Yuki is really happy about her club still stands. And Turkey. |
