PC won't start up

Couple of hours ago when pressing the startup button on my PC it fizzled out and now won't do anything. Power still reaches my monitor and port able hard drive. Last night it took 15 attempts to load up. Other attempts it would power up but no loading beep and the monitor wouldn't show anything.

Any ideas on what components I should check?

If getting power to the system at all the attempts then first try booting with just motherboard, processor and RAM. Disconnect the drives and see if it boots up to BIOS. If not then try switching the RAM with a spare and see if BIOS is loading. If not then it could be the motherboard or the processor. In most cases it is the motherboard - you can just have the motherboard, processor and RAM diagnosed at the nearest computer repair shop.

If it is a graphic card issue, you can see by removing the card first and connecting the cable to onboard graphics.

If getting zero power to the system then try changing the cable that goes to the SMPS. If still not getting any power to the system then it has to be either the SMPS or the motherboard that died.

Same thing happened to me once. Turned out my PSU fried. If all the above does not work it might be the PSU. Try to check if something smells burnt from the back of the case..

For the record, the computer is working again. No issues with loading up and no blue screens.

Seems it was a combination of two components - power supply, as suspected, was one of them. But it wasn't the motherboard that was the other issue - it was the RAM...All 4 sticks suddenly failed simultaneously. I switched to a couple of previous RAM sticks and things are fine. A bit lurchy at times since memory is near max a lot, but functional and stable.

Well RAM's cheap so you should change those as soon as you can.

Come on! All 4 RAM dead? That can't be. Maybe the motherboard just isn't accepting those type of RAM anymore.

Better theory: power spike. It would make sense to have something sensitive like the RAM go as well as the power supply.

I have a similar problem with my PC right now. One or more connections have problems that can cause my CPU to just turn off, sometimes refusing to turn on. That narrows it down to three components: my PSU's connection to the motherboard, the cord that triggers the startup, and the AVR.

I have to confirm my diagnosis though.
