Manga 'Koisuru Asteroid' is getting a TV anime adaptation.

The manga centers on Mira, who a girl who dream of joining the astronomy club once she got into high school, after meeting a man and promising to discover new asteroids when she was younger. But the high school she got into had abolished its astronomy club the year before she enrolled, and it has now been combined with the earth sciences club.

Overall, got what I had expected and it's a slice of life anime with cute girls in an astronomy club. I really hope the keep the momentum of the visual quality.

Looking forwards to this series. Being an amateur astronomer myself and a fan of Manga Time Kirara works, this one will be fun to follow. In the meantime, here's some of the key visuals.

Whoa, story is very open with Yuri-shipping.

I kind of interest how will two sides of the club create a common activities/project that benefit both of them.

This is the show I'd been waiting for this season. My own writing is stories for middle-school kids that use science and math elements, and you just don't get those on American TV. I was hoping this would be a good show, and so far they're doing well.

A couple of points that may be too esoteric for this show, but I'd be thrilled to see brought up -

First, interest in asteroid-hunting has gone up since the meteor that blew up over Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013. I wouldn't be surprised if there was some "citizen science" available that could help Ao and Mira in their quest.

Second, geology and astronomy really do go together. Asteroids are pretty much just big flying rocks, after all. The only scientist who walked on the moon was a geologist.

I wonder if they'll mention JAXA's Hayabusa2 space probe, which is currently on the way back to Earth after a successful mission at the asteroid Ryugu. I remember in Hyouka there was a poster of the original Hayabusa probe on the wall of the club room.

This is a very Kirara-style series, complete with fairly heavy yuri overtones that probably won't go anywhere. Still, the girls are all varying degrees of adorable, and the subject matter could be interesting.

I think that for Mira and Ao, they'll need to start by getting accustomed to using a telescope with a CCD first, figure out imaging, then learn software like Guide Star Catalog (or any fictionalised equivalent) to identify the objects they find. I think spectrometry is needed to check the composition of any body that hasn't impacted, and I'm curious to see what equipment Mikage and Mai will use for that.

I'm actually wondering if there are any other members here who do amateur astronomy now who also happen to be Manga Time Kirara fans – this is the perfect combination for folks with that interest, and in particular, I feel like Koisuru Asteroid should be right up Myssa Rei and Sam Curt's alley.

My goodness, that was wonderful. I'd read some comments last week from people worried that this show would be all CGDCT, with no science. But no, this week even the obligatory hot spring scene had science in it.

I remember my sixth grade campout, which I generally hated because it was cold and I didn't like being away from home. The one thing I did like was that our teacher brought a telescope and we were able to see Jupiter with two of its moons. That was downright magical.

The "Earthrise" poster on the wall in the OP and ED sequences looks like the one taken by JAXA's Kaguya spacecraft, not the more famous one shot by Bill Anders on Apollo 8. You can see the Kaguya photo here.

They did a pretty good job of getting the right shape for asteroid Vesta, which is the brightest of the asteroids and the second largest. Here's what it looked like when NASA's Dawn spacecraft visited in 2011. A surprising number of meteors that strike the Earth come from Vesta.

The rock-gathering sequence reminded me of an episode in HBO's From the Earth to the Moon, in which the Apollo astronauts are taken out to the desert and taught how to be field geologists. The club should watch that sometime if they're stuck inside on a rainy day.

The joke and gag in this show don't really work. But I like the story and detail about the Rock & Astronomy. Characters are cute.

They got the details on how to set a telescope up correct, and the fact that the telescope was allowed to rest for a bit prevents the minor issue of temperature differences from reducing image quality. The science is definitely in the show, and I'm actually surprised so many are dismissing the show for not nailing the humour when there's a treasure trove of cool tidbits that are being explored. In this case, I'd argue that the journey towards yielding a functional and educational Earth Sciences club is actually more important than the jokes and cute girls moments.
