I liked it. I was rarely exposed to the Gundam franchise, but for a show that promotes Gunplas for merchandise purposes, I did enjoy it. The unexpected friendship between Sei and Reiji ensues, the visual and animation department was good, the battle scenes inside the alternate reality weren't bad and I'm really starting to like Yuki Hayashi's music, her score was great though it likely won't be on par with Katou or Sawano yet. Hope it gets better later on.

It may not be the ultra-serious Gundam that people may want (even G-Gundam had a rather serious first episode, aesthetics aside), but damn if episode one wasn't loads of fun!
Spoiler for Episode 1:
Incredibly, the episode lacks the standard Gundam intro monologue, instead going straight into the setting and allowing the episode's action and character dialogue to do the exposition. I'm fairly certain they'll do a more thorough expo for the 2nd ep, but so far it's off to a nice start.
Some parts were embarrassing to watch though, like Sei going on and on about the Wing Gundam... reminds me too much of myself when I was younger >_> It seems they're going with gunpla build quality and pilot skill as the main factor for battles, seeing as how they show a Freedom Gundam get sliced by a Dijeh, and of course Sei's Wing Gundam being defeated by a Gyan. Then you get the best example of Sei's father being the 2nd Runner up in the Gundam Battle tournament using just an RX-78-2 .
Reiji is a whole lot more mysterious than I thought though... being pretty much "summoned" by a mysterious stone? Not to mention his lack of common sense and his ignorance of what soda is kinda points to him being rather otherwordly. There's already theories going on about Reiji being just a figment of Sei's imagination ala Fight Club, but there are scenes where Reiji clearly is visible to everyone else (his first appearance on the building wouldn't make sense from Sei's PoV).
The best part about the episode of course was the battles. They may be simplistic, but damn if they aren't nice to look at and incredibly dynamic, and you can always rely on the Gundam franchise to provide 2D-animated goodness in a time when mecha anime now heavily relies on cell-shaded CGI.

So yeah, I just saw the episode (my connection miraculously working well streaming it).
Spoiler for Episode Summary:
First, the battle system:
It seems the series took a little bit different approach from GBB. The fighting system here doesn’t rely heavily on how well you built the gunpla but also takes gunpla-control to center stage in the battle system. That’s nice, and certainly works well with the longer series compared to an OVA that GBB is.
Next, the plot/story:
The story is pretty standard for an anime centered around merchandise-fight like this. It’s not too far from the likes of Beyblade, Bakugan, or Crush Gear. But what I like though is that surprisingly, none of the characters is annoying or too over-the-top so far. Even the resident bully (Sazaki IIRC) is not the “I bully you for no reason other than being strong”-type. He has his motivation and actually really appreciate Sei’s skill in building Gunpla. Sei & Reiji themselves are pretty likable. Sei with his gentle demeanor and Seiji’s no-nonsense self are destined to be a pair. They're (like what Hamazura pointed out) kinda like Yugi Mutou & Yami Yugi, only in separate bodies .
Last but not least, the fighting:
Man, it’s truly awesome watching Gyan fights via modern animation. Wing also looks great in getting its ass kicked by Gyan. Also, Build Strike fighting with its fists and then finishing it with the beam saber is really nice (reminds me of old super-robot anime). I give my thumb for the fights in this episode.
All in all, I really enjoy this anime for what it is: People doing Gunpla battles and watching various MSs duking it out. It’s truly a fan’s wet-dream came true .
PS:
I actually laughed when the AI pronounced "desert" as "dessert" LOL .
Also, the first scene where Build Strike pop his arm off is chuckle-inducing.
Well that first episode was cheesy as hell, but likeable in a humble kind of way even if Reiji having teleportation powers makes no sense. Also that Ramba Ral expy was awesome, kind of looking forward to more easter eggs and cameos like that.
From left to right I can see Char's Z'Gok, a GM (Arctic or 3 perhaps?), original Gundam on top of Guntank, a red Rick Dom, a DINN, a hybrid between Hamma Hamma and I think Juagg (no idea), Mariner Zaku, Meer's idol performance ZAKU (ha), and what I am assuming is Dynasty Warriors Gundam's Musha Gundam Mark 1.

That "hybrid" is the Gundam Aesculapius from wing g-unit sidestory.
