Supreme Court Strikes Down Defense Of Marriage Act

Quote:
The Supreme Court on Wednesday struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, the 1996 federal law that prohibits married same-sex couples from receiving federal benefits.

In a 5-4 ruling written by Justice Anthony Kennedy, and joined by the liberal-leaning justices, the Court struck down the law that prohibits same-sex couples from receiving federal tax, retirement and immigration benefits.

The decision means married couples will be treated equally by the federal government regardless of their sexual orientation.

“DOMA is unconstitutional as a deprivation of the equal liberty of persons that is protected by the Fifth Amendment,” Kennedy wrote for the Court. “DOMA’s principal effect is to identify a subset of state-sanctioned marriages and make them unequal.”

If Politicians Had to Debug Laws Like Software, They’d Fix the Bugs:

"In the spring, members of Congress set off to fly home for a holiday—and ran
into mammoth lines at the airports. Why were things so bad? Because of airport
furloughs caused by the “sequester.” The sequester, you may recall, is the
ridiculous measure Congress passed when members couldn’t agree on a budget,
and it mandates across-the-board cuts.

Critics warned that the sequester would cause hardship throughout the country,
but congress-folk didn’t care — until they had to share in the pain. When they
discovered that the sequester was eating into their vacation time, they rushed
back to the Capitol and passed a law restoring funding to airports, working so
fast that part of the bill was handwritten.

Congress, it turns out, isn’t paralyzed. It’s just not motivated. In this spirit,
there’s one simple way to get our do-nothing legislators off the dime: Have them
eat their own dog food."

Hilliary Clinton better go work on her 2020 reelection bid then.

Also, when will they stop using Ohio as the King maker for America?

I'm kind of surprised that this thread has not touched on the activities of the NSA as revealed by Edward Snowden. Is it problematic that Republicans and Democrats aren't clearly polarized against each other on this issue, so people don't know what stance to take on the information?

Yep. The NSA news is actually a global news item. We wouldn't mind if you Americans decide to spy on yourselves, but the NSA is actually spying on the whole planet. So most of the outrage is in the general news.

I actually think this is not a bad strategy if we take into account the amount of damage done to Romney in those debates during the drawn-out primary.

I don't remember well, but didn't the debates prove Romney wasn't quite as incompetent as first thought? (Of course, I also remember the bar being amazingly low.)

Ron Paul, John Huntsman and Newt Gingrich were pretty decent. Ron Paul's idea isn't subscribed by a lot of people including his own party. John Huntsman and Newt knew what they were talking about, but they both aren't "conservative" enough... especially John Huntsman who actually doesn't fit the typical Republican mold. The rest of them were between wacko to nutjobs. Michelle Backman and Rick Santorum stood out the most for being extra hilarious. So while Romney didn't have much trouble going through the debate phase due to his strong debating skill, PR people for the other candidates dug out too much dirt to give democrats a lot of ammunition to work with later on. It also didn't help how Romney couldn't stick to one message from one week to the next... and his choice comment such as the infamous 47% were icing on the cake to close the deal for the Democrats. Obama couldn't give away the election to Republican even if he tried and try he did (reference to his first debate).

The rest of the world can talk about it from their perspective, but I think it's worth discussing from the American perspective as well. Specifically, what do we do about it, and how do we get it under control. The problem is that both political parties seem to be in favor of the program and aren't taking strong moves to provide oversight or limitations. What can the people do?

Well, if you saw the support in the House for NSA restrictions (which actually barely failed), the left-wing Dems and the far-right wing Repubs were for it, while moderate members from both parties were against it.

A better question would be, what can we do?

I am not sure any sane Democrat wants Warren as POTUS. The way I see it, POTUS does secret, unsavoury things by the nature of the job, and Warren is better off letting Clinton have the post. Warren is keeping herself clean where she is, it is where she does the most good.
