Wait, how long was he in the middle east? (Also was it confirmed to be afghan or is that just an impression?) It didn't feel like a huge amount of time, a couple of months at most. Maybe I wasn't paying attention, but the chronology seems to match up with the rest of the routes, apart from the sprites not aging.

It's not confirmed to be Afghanistan but given that part of Terra takes place in the early 2000s, and that IIRC the country is occupied by Western powers at the time, it would almost have to be, and given how much Kotarou experienced during that time, it would have to be a couple of years.
But, like I said, the amount of time things take place over is really messed-up.

Ok, just went to check...I couldn't find the 4 years part, I dunno where I came to that conclusion (then again I just rushed through most of Terra right now).

Anyways what I did confirm was that Kotarou spent at the very least two and a half years in the foreign country. He mentions before the big mission that he's in his second year in that military group. After the mission he mentions keeping up missions and helping Jasmine set up her own group. Afterward he mentions something like "A few months later I get a call...".
So basically he spent 2 and a half years abroad, possibly 3.

Now let's see:

Assuming Kotarou joined Guardian when he entered highschool or at least early on he should have been 16.
The training lasted a few months so let's say he was 16 and half by the end (assuming the 20 year old thing was fake).
He spent a couple of months in Kazamatsuri so let's say he was 16 and 3/4 by the time he entered the military group.
As I mentioned before he spent (likely) nearly 3 years in the military group so let's say when he returned to Kazamatsuri he was 19 and a half.
Considering it most have taken a few months from his arrival to when he turned into a tree...

Kotarou should have been 19/20 years old when he merged with Kagari. Which in turn makes Kotori 9/10 and Akane 10/11 which...yea, matches the sprites and personalities.
Also means that 6/7 years pass between Kotarou becoming a tree and when Pochi is "born".

So...yea, if you take the time to look into it, the ages and overall time seems to match-up nicely and actually make sense. You just need to look at it carefully (cause God knows I was confused the first time around).

Actually, I'm pretty sure he spends well over a year working within both Gaia and Guardian after he gets back from Afghanistan, which helps even further.
Also, I'm pretty sure he's supposed to actually be 20 when he gets back, as well. He says something to that effect.

The only thing he mentions when he gets back (that I've seen) is that he's old enough to drink sake. However, by then (by my calculations) he should already be 19 (legal drinking age in Japan right?)...plus he could also be refering to his fake ID.

That said, I agree that he might have spent at least a year working as a triple agent so by the end he should be 20/21.

Finally got my hands on this one, loved it from the start! Decided to pick Kotori's route as my first playthrough because she seemed like a lot of fun.

I... wasn't ready for that. Damn.
Now I'm almost scared to see what the rest of the routes have in store for me..

Akane = Best Route of the heroines, leave it for last.

Though if you're like me you'll rage over Shizuru's ending...which is crap...IMHO.

Nothing beat Moon-Kagari in Rewrite Quest(Harvest Festa)....

And well Shizuru is cute and great, however there is a jinx that prevent me from putting her as my top heroines....

I should probably let him speak for himself, but in the other routes, Kotarou's still a person and they are actually able to be together. In Shizuru's, the entire world was just remade (nobody else left) and Kotarou's just a tree :P

Wow... I can't shake the feeling that was a bad ending. The world as we know it ends, only a handful of people live...and Kotarou turned into a tree? That's not really what I thought "We'll meet again" means...
Her diary at the end was simply too sad. Damn, I didn't feel a thing during Air/Kanon/Clannad, but this one's really pulling at my heartstrings

I've only played through Kotori and Shizuru's routes so far. So I imagine I still have quite a bit to go

Kotori End = Kotarou and Kotori are fine and get together;
Akane End = Kotarou and Akane are exiled but atleast are together;
Lucia End = A cure for her poison may never be found and they have to keep moving around but they are atleast alright and together;
Chihaya/Sakuya End = Everyone's together and happy;

And Shizuru End? Human population reduced to 50 (lead by Imamiya of all people) and Kotarou's a tree...
Fuck that ending and the stupid writer that thought it was a good Bittersweet Ending...not it wasn't, it was a horrible attempt at one.
