I find myself amazed at how elegant the Hideuze look in a mathematical sense (the Golden Spiral) and I can't have been the only one who caught the the Alliance has the Vitruvian Man as a symbol.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vitruvian_Man

Count me in as someone who thinks the Alliance is the true "baddie" in this series. The way the Alliance essentially sleep indoctrinate their soldiers, and their use of eugenics in how they only allow a select few the privilege of breeding makes me very suspicious as to how much they are the aggressor in the conflict.

I do wonder how much Amy will change Ledo and how much Ledo will change the members of the Gargantia. I have a suspicion that the dark part of this from Urobuchi is how dark human nature can be, but I think this will end up happier than most people are expecting.

On rewatch, something stands out like a sore thumb about how pissed off everybody was about
Spoiler for End of Episode 2:

Did anybody else notice, that earlier in the same episode, Pinion was awfully eager to toss Ledo overboard and take Chamber (not like a pirate at all, no siree ), and while they did ultimately decide against it Fearrokku and Ridgett sure seemed to be giving that option serious consideration.

Heck, they thinking pretty hard about just giving Ledo to the pirates (whom I'm sure would have just treated him to tea and biscuits before sending him on his way...)

Makes the whole morality lecture in Episode 3 ring a little hollow...

Pinion!=everyone on Gargantia. I can see your point a bit since they are some that agree with him, but that's just natural to have such diverging opinions. What's important is that other side won in end, proving not everyone is callous.

If you ask me the real problem with the Gargantians behavior in ep 3 is their willingness to sacrifice the lives of men when they didn't have to.

Yeah but I also remember how nobody fired a single shot at Ledo even though he had just kidnapped one of their kids. As soon as Amy freed herself, that was a pretty huge window of opportunity for them.
Plus when Chamber broke through the hanger, someone with less cool or someone more trigger happy could have seen that as a clear sign of hostility and ordered to open fire.

It was clear from that that they are definitely not the "shoot first, ask questions later" kind.

So ...The stranger they don't know (and don't know if he has friends who will seek revenge over his death), its up for debate over whether to kill him and take his stuff or not, but the Pirates who were literally threatening female members of the Gargantia with rape minutes before are off limits?

Note that we see actual debate over this for Ledo. We don't see any such thing for the pirates. Nobody says "they got what they deserved," and they AGAIN have a debate over throwing Ledo to the wolves.

It feels pretty much like they instinctively rate Ledo lower in their moral hierarchy than the pirates. Furthermore, I think this is actually very stupid. They've already seen that Ledo has very formidable weaponry at his disposal, so what happens if his friends show up just as mad as the pirates? They never openly discuss that possibility.

Honestly I'm picking nits over writing issues, I think this series is pretty great so far.

You are exaggerating. Nobody said that you should never kill not even in self-defense.

And the reason they refused Pinion's suggestion is the exact same reason they don't want to kill pirates if they can avoid it.

In both cases is because of fear of retaliations. Nobody actually felt pity for the pirates.

Actually they do, that's the very reason the captain dismissed Pinion's suggestion. Check again that part in EP2.

I've rewatched Ep1 and 2, and I didn't catch any mention that abnormal solar activity is what caused the ice age that prompted humanity to flee from Earth. I don't think I'm at liberty to name the fansub I'm using. Even so, can anyone point out where the reference about the Sun came from?

Episode2 at about 6 minutes. The scene with Ledo and Chamber talking about their situation and how to deal with it. At one point they start talking about earth.

Watched the first three episodes.. and I have to say I'm not impressed. The Hideauze are by far the most interesting things in the show so far.

Then this obviously is not the show for you. The focus isn't the alien invasion but a young solider learning to become more human as he interacts with individuals who have the luxury of living without problems he is used to facing.

Well no, I say that because the scenario they've created for earth, while certainly convenient for what they're trying to do, doesnt have much there. Now, I'm saying this in my opinion of course, but (I've only seen the first three episodes), theres not much so far in terms of flora/fauna, and they chose to leave earth at a technological level that we could easily relate to. I just think in contrast to the Hideauze, which I thought were a great addition because of the whole bio-mechanical thing they have going on , the rest of the world thats been painted has been plain imho, as have the interactions between the crew members minus ledo. Obviously this is with respect to the fact that I had high expectations of the show from the first episode and from Urobochi being there.
