I could say the same to Hina and Hayate as well. They all share a very tragic past, the only difference is that Athena has quite a large skeleton in her closet.

Still, I don't think that because she has had a tragic past up until now that she will face a tragic end, because that would contradict the tone of the story.

Contradict? Not at all. Yes, alot of Hayate is crazy comedy, but the Athena parts have been pretty dramatic and serious.

The good thing is that neither of us knows, so we can speculate all we want. My prediction/bet: Hayate will "mostly succeed", but something will force a bittersweet parting of an at least semi-permanent kind. That's what I mean with tragic. Athena will _not_ be with Hayate, and when this arc is over, she will have disappeared.

What's your prediction?

Honestly, I just can't see the manga ending at this point. Aside from the countless plotlines that still haven't been resolved and the introduction of newer ones now make ending now even less possible.

Apparently, the Hakuo, now known as Shirosakura, was a sword in the Royal Garden and now somehow was in the posession of Machina until Ginka forced it out of his body.

Spoiler for Chapter 259 ~Fly High~:

Hayate does not recognize Hina in hero suit. He concentrates on rescuing Athena. Isumi tells Hina to break the giant gem above her head. Hina hesitates, but seeing Isumi looking at her, she decides to do it. On the other hand with Nagi's side, Kinka is dealing with monsters.
Hina manages to break the giant gem. All the monsters disappear, but Hina gets caught by the giant skeleton. But Isumi manages to get one hand free. She calls Sakuya and asks her what changes anything into gold every time it touches(I think it's because Hina was turning into gold). Sakuya doesn't seem to know what it is, but Ayumu answers that it's King Midas. As Isumi managed to know the name, she cuts Midas's arm and changes the hammer into flame and imbues it onto Masamune.
Hayate confronts Midas.

And I'm not posting the spoiler pics(the incident that happened a few weeks ago became a major trauma...)

I see a possible resolution to the arc.

I believe the key to the resolution could be Hina turning into gold.

Prediction: With Isumi's help, Hayate manages to take out Midas. However, Hina stays turned into gold ("dead"), and Athena eventually sacrifices herself to save Hina (by unsummoning Midas and herself, undoing the "gold" debuff). Before that, Hayate will have enough time to make up with A-tan in a highly emotional scene. It will be bittersweet, but with a sweeter element than I'd have expected.

Well, let's see ... I'm not too worried about Hina. After all, we knew she had a heart of gold all the time. So she'll live.

English looks fine to me. Only part I didn't understand was the part about changing the hammer into flame? What hammer?

"Ranger" doesn't know aggro control. Don't blame the tank!

Anyway, didn't Midas say something about Hayate cutting off his arm in the last chapter? Hayate clearly didn't know what he was talking about, and the only thing I can recall about that was a teaser image or something that isn't technically part of continuity yet. This leads me to believe Midas may not be truly defeated here, and/or that Hayate still has another time travel trip to make to confront Midas.

Very well, I'll take this bet. By the time Midas is defeated, Hayate will have realized that Ranger is Hina. And to make things a bit interesting, if I lose the bet I will change my avatar to a Hina one for an entire month.

There is no denying that the current events have been of a more serious nature (though I sniggered a bit at Hata trying to throw the fate of the world at one point). But Athena dying after everyone has tried to save her would send a different message from the one the manga carried around until now. Remember, the resolution to previous arcs usually ended with an optimistic outcome, and after all the effort, sacrifices, blood and tears that has been put in into this battle, I can't see a conclusion like that.
Now I do admit that I am a bit biased because 1) Athena is ranking among the favourites from this manga 2) I want to see her interact with Izumi 3) I dislike killing character the author has invested so much time and development into without a good reason.

What's your prediction?

I foresee that after Hayate buries Midas in the big grave in the sky, Athena will be saved and if she keeps her memory of him, she and Machine will join the cast, but like you said, Athena and Hayate won't become a couple again at this point (IMO they still have a long way to repair their relationship, and what happens after this would go way deep into speculation area).

Yes, Volume 22 came with a special Hina photo, but aside from that I don't know if there is any other difference between the regular and the Special (I only buy the Viz release of Hayate so sorry >_< that's all I know)

This is something that I liked in this arc, everyone is working together (whether directly or indirectly) all for a single goal (to save Athena). It really does show that Hayate really does have a strong force behind him.

I would support the theory stated by Arabesque that the piko-piko hammer is changed into the flame and is then imbued into Masamune. That would be the only thing that makes sense.

And should I be happy for Hayate's shounen power-up? lol. It's a little cliché to me. But ah well. All shounen manga's are cliché at some point.
