It could be a few things holding her back from really diving into the rehab. Fear could easily be a driving force. No doubt the shock, pain, sound of that injury must have left a serious mark on her. Probably is a fear that if she gets invested and starts running that it could all be taken away again. Maybe she's also afraid that even after the rehab that while she could run again that she might never be able to hit the level she had before. Depending how long the rehab might take I wonder how much she could get back involved with the club again.
She's also really distanced herself from club and Haruka. It might feel awkward to consider going back. Then just throw in that she enjoys spending time with Kondou and going back to running would take away from that. In the end though I'm getting the feeling these two will drive each other towards taking up their passions once again. Kondou with his writing and Akira with running. They can challenge the dreams they've put on hold knowing the other has their back.

That being said, this has generally been presented as a character conflict for Akira - an either/or choice. She used to run. Now she doesn't. Now she works near her love interest. The two are subtly indicated to be alternatives - she could do one or the other but probably not both. Running used to be enjoyable for her. Now it isn't because she can't really run. Instead, spending time with Kondou is enjoyable for her. It's a substitute. In other words, for her to seriously get into running again she would have to "give up" on Kondou. The latest episode presents something similar for Kondou. He used to write a lot. Now he doesn't seem to so much because he lost the joy - in the past his joy for writing came into conflict with his family. He wasn't able to balance the two and effectively lost both and became the boring middle aged man we were initially introduced to. However, we frequently see Kondou being reminded of his youth. He even gets into contact with an old friend for the first time in 10 years. He clearly has a strong passion for books even if he's not writing so much. He also feels somewhat in despair that others cannot understand this about him - he feels unable to be who he really is. Except in this episode Akira seems to be fine with it and more or less encourages him. Is that because she's in love with him and simply excusing it or because she herself has a similar passion and so understands? The episode doesn't give us a clear answer but consider this - we have seen Akira getting jealous and feeling left out when Kondou spends time with others (eg during the hamster episode) but she doesn't seem to have a similar issue when he's spending time on his passion. So it seems to be more that Akira is similar and because of that she understands. So in the course of their relationship they are actually both stirring old feelings in each other. If they pursue those old feelings it would come at the expense of them having a close/intimate relationship but maybe they could stay friends - I can easily see Kondou coming to running events to watch Akira and also with Akira reading Kondou's books (and perhaps talking to him about it). To go back to the original question a bit: I'm speculating here but I think one reason why Akira hasn't shown that much drive to go through rehab is because she pretty much only ran because she liked it. I don't get the sense that she had a burning competitive spirit. ie she didn't run to win, she ran for the enjoyment of it. Running with/against others was simply a way to spend time doing something she enjoyed with others. We've never seen Akira faced with a past rival who she wanted to beat or something like that - if she'd had such a thing or otherwise had a strong motivation for competing and winning then maybe she wouldn't have hesitated to go through rehab. |

btw, it is not certain, but there is a chance the anime will have a different, original ending compares to the manga, wait and see.

After this episode, I think I really want a spinoff where Kondo's author buddy Chihiro persuades Kondo to quit the restaurant job and co-write a book, which they research by travelling around having wacky adventures.
Or maybe a prequel where they're college literature geeks. You really get their old friendship and Chihiro being a little overwhelmed by fame and trying to keep himself grounded and remember where he comes from. As far as the main story goes, well more developments which suggest where the story's going. Which if I'm right will be very satisfying. |

Next week is the final episode already. I hope they'll write a good conclusion. Of course it'd be even better if they adapted the rest of the manga in a second season, but that seems highly unlikely to say the least.

Ah the very last episode of this series. Similar to other episodes, it still had that moody feel.
This episode actually gave Takashi some screen time. Not sure how I feel about that as I didn't like him much. Still, I thought the finale is an entertaining episode as it also gave Akira more screentime with Yuuta. There's still the usual moments between Akira and Kondou and I feel that she is much more comfortable talking to him now compared to the beginning of the show. Oh and we also get a few more flashback moments of Akira and Haruka even in the finale. Overall, I thought this was a fantastic show. Kinda wish it would be longer but I was quite satisfied with it. 9/10.

Kondo goes back to his first love, writing, and Akira goes back to her first love,
That was a satisfying ending, with both of them having got back in touch with the things which were most important to them. I look forward to reading the manga when Vertical bring it out, to see what was cut by necessity of time, but yeah, this was a good series and definitely in keeping with what Noitamina used to be, I think. |
