20k average would be really, really good. A lot of series are getting 右肩下がり(most commonly called right shoulder/右肩, or just) decreasing sales.

To name a few, Yuru Yuri, Ao no Exorcist, P4, Working are all having this issue right now (with Nana being the worst offender of this in history). Horizon's twitter posted a few days ago that it restocked but still doesn't have that many (and urged people to go to a few more shops ...), so the retail shops are still mostly dry. Amazon's pre-order is still being accumulated despite having nothing ready for deliver until end of January, so really after the second week's tally, we should get a more accurate number for volume 1.

It's very unfortunate that the Amazon stopped pre-order around the TVK airing (people in Kantou/Tokyo regions with the most buying power), so the effect's uncleared. I personally think conservatively, the series could've hit 18k on the first week. Depending on how long Horizon stays 1st on Amazon, it has a chance to "break" P4 (which is having really bad right shoulder issue) or Tiger and Bunny; personally, I don't really care as 15k was my starting guess and anything above is bonus, though I would love to see how well the series can push.

Reaction from sales thread:
Anti's: Lol just 16k, pretty average and so much for hyping.
Horizon-believers: Series's "manabi line" was estimated to be 5,000, but this is the triple of that, so it's complete victory.

Either way, it's funny.

P4, WORKING, and Yuruyuri have bad drop off between vols 1 and 2 is because (in the case of P4 and WORKING) their first volumes are cheaper than the subsequent volumes. For Yuruyuri the first vol had an event ticket. AoEx is like that because it's not being bought by the same demographic that watches late night anime. All those series have special cases for their drop off. I bring this up because Horizon's first volume uses the same pricing method as P4 and WORKING (thought it's a bit more expensive). So, there will probably be a bigger than normal drop off between vols 1 and 2 of Horizon. From there though sales should be pretty consistent.

Actually, them haters forgot that this 16k is under the circumstance that all the stores selling Horizon were practically emptied of every single copy of the series. (it's quite a hyperbole, but )

Imagine what would Horizon's sales would be if it actually released a higher number of copies. Those copies would still be flying out of the shelves, I'm sure.

One big reason why Horizon is selling this much is the seiyuus, the staff and practically the original creator put lots of love in this series.
I think this is the first time I've heard of a series (an adaptation, even) that even the seiyuus fell in love with the original work. You just have to give Kawakami-sensei credit for that.

I think it's slightly different for Horizon's case. There are just way too much crap in between to bait buyers (new character songs that aren't included in OST and novel every odd volume, mini-setting guide for all evens). 2ch pretty much labeled Horizon buyers a cult . I don't follow any of the other series' specials except price, but I don't expect Horizon's drop off would be that significant, but we'll have to see.

You could very much be completely correct and I'm just too much of a fantard to realize it (wouldn't be the first time I've misjudged something that's for sure).

Don't forget that Allen posted somewhere early on in this same thread that Ono flew to Kansai just to watch episode 1 live!!! Both he and Kawakami also showed up to the special event on Christmas eve!

Unless your name is 'Gundam', I'm pretty sure under any circumstances 16k is a pretty big deal- People would kill just to break 10k, heck or even less.

they will just say "oh Japan and their obsession for big boobs again~ ANIME INDUSTRY IS DYING!!!!!!"

sales number will not shut up the haters, but it gives the investors an injection of confidence that they will more likely to put in more funds for the future projects which is good for us fans.

Well, maybe seeing sales gives me kind of a satisfaction since Horizon is rather under-appreciated outside japan

We care about the sales because the sales determined future adaptions.
